Israel successfully test-fires 'David's Sling' missile defense system

Testing David's Sling Weapon System.
In an ongoing effort to boost its missile defenses, Israel has recently been testing its David's Sling anti-ballistic missile system. The latest test coincided with positive developments in Iran nuclear talks currently just meters from the finishing line.

A number of recent David's Sling missile tests - the most recent one this Tuesday - have been a great success, the Homa Directorate at the Defense Ministry and the American Missile Defense Agency (MDA) announced Wednesday. "This is a unique weapons system: the interceptor is small and agile," Homa Directorate chief Yair Ramati said. "The system should be introduced to the Israeli Air Force (IAF) by next year."

Comment: In 2011, the US pledged $235.7M aid for David's Sling and Arrow 3 defense systems in addition to $205M for Iron Dome. These funds were added to the annual $3B stipend already allocated by congress and paid for by the American public.

Also known as the "Magic Wand," the short-range ballistic missile defense system, designed to intercept medium range missiles from nearby Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, has been jointly developed the between the Pentagon contractor and by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

"The system is designed to intercept... threats from Lebanon. Representatives from the US were present during the trials and are full partners in the project," Ramti told the Ynet news site.

Comment: Double standard? Some countries are restricted, condemned, policed for wanting to defend themselves with sophisticated weapons systems even when they only have junk and duct tape, while others aren't even winked at (and we can guess who that might be). David's Sling is categorized as a defense missile system, yet it has shown its capability to seek and destroy. Would Israel deploy this weapon as an aggressive means to an end? In a heartbeat. At the US taxpayer's expense. Why does the US make such a special effort to buy Israel the best technology and acquiesce to its demands? Location, location, location!

DARPA to test new underwater submarine attack drone

This undated photo obtained March 29, 2015 from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) shows a prototype Submarine Hold at RisK (SHARK) unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) during deep-sea testing for DARPA’s Distributed Agile Submarine Hunting (DASH) program.
This year, the Pentagon's advanced research projects department will start testing their new "submarine" drone, which can lie in wait on the ocean floor for years before ever being launched into the skies.

The new drones, being developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), are part of a new focus by the US military in developing and improving technology for emerging threats.

These deployable, unmanned systems and sensors can theoretically lie on the deep-ocean floor for years at time in anticipation of the US Navy's need for non-lethal assistance. When needed, the deep-sea nodes can be activated remotely and recalled to the surface.

DARPA will specifically be testing whether the drones can survive for years under extreme pressure before being triggered from a distance, and whether they can rise through a water column and relay information. The tests are part of DARPA's two phases under its Upward Falling Payloads (UFP) program.

EU human rights group investigating Maidan violence finds Ukraine Interior Ministry 'uncooperative and obstructive'

The investigation into Maidan violence during Ukraine's coup didn't satisfy the requirements of the European Convention on Human Rights, says a report from the European Council, adding that Ukraine's Interior Ministry was "uncooperative and obstructive."

The report specifically concentrated on the investigation of violent acts during the three months of Maidan demonstrations: Violent dispersal of the protest by Berkut riot police on November 30, 2013, clashes on January 22, 2014, which resulted in the first deaths of protesters, and February 18-21, 2014, the deadliest days of the Kiev protests.

Before the February 2014 coup, "there was no genuine attempt to pursue investigations," said a document by the International Advisory Panel. The panel was established by the Council of Europe to review investigations into the violent incidents during the Maidan demonstrations.

"The lack of genuine investigations during the three months of the demonstrations inevitably meant that the investigations did not begin promptly and this constituted, of itself, a substantial challenge for the investigations, which took place thereafter and on which the Panel's review has principally focused," the report stated.

The panel added that "the appointment post-Maidan of certain officials to senior positions in the MoI [Ukraine Interior Ministry] contributed to the lack of appearance of independence."

Who spies for Israel in Washington's Iranian nuclear negotiations?

Sherman and Cohen
© www.zimbio.com
U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman (L) and Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen (R).
The WSJ report of this incident tries to play down the serious implications of Israel's espionage by claiming that Israeli spying of US diplomatic negotiations is 'normal even among allies'; that 'both sides do it'; that the US 'tolerates' Israeli spying; that the 'Israelis have not directly spied on the US' but use sympathetic US agents . . . and several other excuses for Israel's behavior.

After having revealed Tel Aviv's espionage - the WSJ dismisses the sabotage. Worse still, it makes no attempt to investigate who, among the highly-placed US government officials with direct access to the negotiations, has been spying for Israel. This essay attempts to address this question by identifying the most likely suspects.

We will proceed by describing the seriousness of the crime by noting the centrality of the US-Iran negotiations for US global politics and the enormous damage, which has resulted from Israel's securing secret documents, reports and proceedings of the talks and having a highly placed agent among the US diplomats.

The Significance of the US-Iran Negotiations

The negotiations between the major powers (P5+1), composed of the five UN Security Council members plus Germany, led by the US, with Iran have proceeded for over two years. Israel is not part of the negotiating process, formally, but indirectly its presence is substantial. For Washington the stakes are very high: securing a nuclear agreement with Iran in which Teheran submits to constant and pervasive 'inspections', and dismantles a substantial part of its nuclear program, certainly weakens Iran's regional prestige and increases US influence in the region. Secondly, through the initial agreement, it is likely that Washington will move forward to deepen joint political activity with Iran in neighboring countries. Thirdly, Washington will use the agreement to isolate Syria, Lebanon (Hezbollah) and Yemen, from Iranian financial, military and diplomatic support.

Comment: Spies R Us...a thrilling "Who Dunnit" in the making! Undercover Agents, Espionage, Betrayal, Global Dominance, War of the Century, Humanity in the Balance...don't we all live in interesting times! Don't we wish this scenario was on the cutting board of some film maker's studio instead of a real-time/real-life cliff hanger with the president but a bit character in the cover story. Unfortunately there will be no rewrites and no retakes, especially if Israel manages to pull off the "win-win" and the US sticks to the script and predictably fulfills its supporting role.

A Yemeni's call for help

Image
© Reuters
No one understands the horrors of US imperial wars better than victims experiencing them.

Overnight Tuesday, a Yemeni national emailed this call for help, saying:
"Dear Mr Stephen,

In the name of humanity and what you believe in, we call upon you to transfer our sufferings and make influential humanitarian INGOs, scholars, decision makers all over the world hear our children screams out of fears & listen to our sufferings due to this aggression led by arrogant dictators of Arabia who are bombarding our towns, destroying infrastructure and killing civilians.

Yemen prior to this aggression was dying and this brutal aggression would eliminate a whole country. We're all humans. Poor country living with less than 2$ a day.

Please do anything you can for saving us. God bless you. I'm writing this while my 3 years daughter crying hearing sounds of air strikes."
His call for help highlights US responsibility for daily terror-bombing horrors - the threat of death or serious injuries all Yemenis face. Civilians are as vulnerable as combatants.

Comment: This latest conflict bears an eery resemblance to sooo many others, from a number of nations around the world on a daily basis... Whether directly, indirectly or by proxy force, you can count on the fact that where the U.S. political/military/media machine is involved - much death, suffering, and destruction will be inflicted on an innocent population - found guilty of not wanting to live under the yoke of psychopathic oppression. And somehow, be it with the Iranian nuclear energy negotiations, Syria's being accused of having chemical weapons, Eastern Ukraine's fighting Nazi aggression, Venezuela's resistance to U.S. attempts at coup, Iraq's battle against ISIS, (anything missed here?) - there is Russia, standing in its way.And yet Russia: off-setting Western-led economic warfare, encirclement by NATO forces, and an onslaught of demonization and propaganda the likes of which we haven't seen in a long long while, still presses forward with efforts at talks, diplomacy and negotiation. Incredible.

Closing in on Assad: Islamic State captures Palestinian refugee camp inside Damascus

Fighters from ISIS have a new base of operations just some 6 km from the residence of Syrian President Bashar Assad, after entering Yarmouk, a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus suburbs, amid reports of assistance from the Al-Qaeda-affiliates.

"Credible information from public sources indicate that a variety of armed groups are engaged in fierce fighting in areas where Yarmouk's 18,000 civilians, including a large number of children reside, placing them at extreme risk of death, serious injury, trauma and displacement," said a statement from the UNRWA, the international agency that aids the Palestinians in the region.

Comment: This can't be good for Assad. Will this be the pretext for US strikes in Damascus?

More cracks in the Empire: Latin American countries want to remove all US military bases

Latin American conference will discuss the removal of US airbases from their countries.
Leaders from the United States, Canada and Latin America are gathering April 10-11 at the 7th Summit of the Americas to be held in Panama City, Panama, to talk about a variety of issues affecting the Western Hemisphere, including Cuba's relationship with the United States as both countries thaw out of a decades-long diplomatic freeze.

Another controversial subject some of the member countries want to take up is asking the US government to close all military bases in Latin America.

"That is something that belongs in the Cold War," said Colombian former president Ernesto Samper. "This is growing global economy and we have to leave aside all remnants of the past, especially unilateral politics. The bases are no longer relevant and should go."

This isn't the first time that Latin American leaders have asked the US government to close its military bases in the region, and like previous pronouncements on the subject, it is expected to go nowhere.

The US has several bases scattered throughout Latin America, including in Cuba (Guantánamo Bay), Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Honduras.

Samper and other Latin American leaders also criticized the US for its recent remarks on Venezuela, when the Obama administration declared Venezuela "a security threat."

Comment: The US will oppose this of course, probably oh, so politely, citing all the economic 'benefits' that come from what amounts to an occupation. They must. If Latin America were ever to manage this, imagine the list of countries lining up behind them for the same thing?

The rat jumping ship? Israel latest US ally to apply for membership in Chinese Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Obama
As the United States continues to beg ally after ally to forgo joining the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), key nations have, nevertheless, ignored that plea. The UK, Turkey, and Australia have already applied, among others. But the latest application might sting the most, as PM Netanyahu tosses Israel's name into the mix.

47 nations have already applied for membership in the AIIB, a multilateral development bank spearheaded by Beijing. Meant to provide financing for infrastructure projects throughout Asia - and to fill in loan gaps left by the International Monetary Fund - the bank is expected to significantly increase China's influence.

Which is why the United States was largely against it. With a Chinese bank pumping $100 billion into infrastructure projects in the region, Washington will inevitably lose some its own clout. As such, the US has strongly dissuaded its allies from joining, but one by one, countries have flocked to the new institution.

And now the AIIB can add Israel to its list. The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that Prime Minister Netanyahu had signed an application, saying membership would open up opportunities for Israeli companies to enter into one of the fastest growing markets on the planet.

Comment: To apply is not necessarily to be admitted. It will be very interesting to see what actually happens.

The Russian Consulate General in the Yemeni sea port of Aden has been hit by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, a source in the Russia embassy in Yemen told Sputnik.

"There is not a single intact window left," the source said. A possibility of consulate closure and the evacuation of Russian nationals is currently under review, the source added.

Earlier on Wednesday a Russian plane charted for the evacuation of Russian citizens caught in the conflict had been diverted to Cairo, after the coalition denied it landing in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.
