Puppet Masters
In speech after speech, interview after interview, and in social media post after social media post, the Democratic Party congresswoman from Hawaii has served up a merciless indictment of US militarism, making the elementary point that Washington's obscenely inflated defense budget and its addiction to regime change wars, military interventions and the subversion of sovereign governments in pursuit of the full spectrum dominance that lies at the heart of the malignant creeds of neoconservatism and liberal interventionism, is harming rather than protecting the interests of the American people.
The harm is measured in an 'official' poverty rate of 12.3 percent, in other words 39.7 million people. It is measured in a homelessness crisis of indictable proportion, affecting over 500,000 people. And it is measured in the fact that as one of the richest countries in the world, tens of millions of its citizens are without healthcare.
Outside of the basement-rated outlet axing more than a hundred jobs on Monday, the big media news this week is CNN's move to Hudson Yards, which sits right on the coast, right on the Hudson River.
In other words, CNN has moved to the water's edge of Manhattan, the very same Manhattan that will be underwater as soon as 2015.
Oops, sorry, that was an old scientific prediction. Obviously, 2015 has passed without Manhattan flooding.
CNN's Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr tweeted dramatically on Monday afternoon that US officials had told her of credible "intelligence" on "threats from Iran" which included the targeting of US forces in "Syria, Iraq and at sea." Just one hour later, acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan tweeted similarly about "indications of a credible threat" from Iran.
Ironically, the evidence-free claim comes as the US steered a carrier strike group into the Persian Gulf to "send a message" to Tehran - not exactly an olive branch gesture in itself. But even before that, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton had for months been trying to drum up support for US military action against Tehran.
US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Tuesday warned New Delhi against imposing retaliatory tariffs in the backdrop of Washington's planned withdrawal of some trade privileges for India, according to Indian news channel CNBC TV18.
Ross made the comments while on a visit to India. In March, US President Donald Trump had announced plans to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the US.
"When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become an audience and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; a culture-death is a clear possibility." - Professor Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death: Discourse in the Age of Show BusinessWhat characterizes American government today is not so much dysfunctional politics as it is ruthlessly contrived governance carried out behind the entertaining, distracting and disingenuous curtain of political theater. And what political theater it is, diabolically Shakespearean at times, full of sound and fury, yet in the end, signifying nothing.
Played out on the national stage and eagerly broadcast to a captive audience by media sponsors, this farcical exercise in political theater can, at times, seem riveting, life-changing and suspenseful, even for those who know better.
Week after week, the script changes (Donald Trump's Tweets, Congress' hearings on Robert Mueller's Russia probe, the military's endless war drums, the ever-widening field of candidates for the 2020 presidential race, etc.) with each new script following on the heels of the last, never any let-up, never any relief from the constant melodrama.
The players come and go, the protagonists and antagonists trade places, and the audience members are quick to forget past mistakes and move on to the next spectacle.
All the while, a different kind of drama is unfolding in the dark backstage, hidden from view by the heavy curtain, the elaborate stage sets, colored lights and parading actors.
Such that it is, the realm of political theater with all of its drama, vitriol and scripted theatrics is what passes for "transparent" government today, with elected officials, entrusted to act in the best interests of their constituents, routinely performing for their audiences and playing up to the cameras, while doing very little to move the country forward.
Yet behind the footlights, those who really run the show are putting into place policies which erode our freedoms and undermine our attempts at contributing to the workings of our government, leaving us none the wiser and bereft of any opportunity to voice our discontent or engage in any kind of discourse until it's too late.
It's the oldest con game in the books, the magician's sleight of hand that keeps you focused on the shell game in front of you while your wallet is being picked clean by ruffians in your midst.
Indeed, while mainstream America has been fixated on the drama-filled reality show being televised from the White House, the American Police State has moved steadily forward.
Set against a backdrop of government surveillance, militarized police, SWAT team raids, asset forfeiture, eminent domain, overcriminalization, armed surveillance drones, whole body scanners, stop and frisk searches, roving VIPR raids and the like-all of which have been sanctioned by Congress, the White House and the courts-our constitutional freedoms have been steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded.
Our losses are mounting with every passing day.
"There were people who failed to follow through," Guaido told AFP on Monday, but "it doesn't mean that they won't do it soon." The self-appointed interim president didn't specify who his backers were, but they aren't the only ones he has blamed for Maduro's refusal to quietly go away.
Guaido previously blamed the military for not rushing to his side after he called on them to defect last Tuesday, though he stressed his door is still open to anyone who wants to defect. "We still need more soldiers, and maybe we need more officials of the regime to be willing to support it," he told the Washington Post on Saturday, and he indicated to AFP that interest has increased. "There have been discussions...with civil and military officials," he said, insisting "we are very close to achieving change in Venezuela."
Daniel McAdams and Ron Paul, the former libertarian representative from Texas, discussed the repeated attempts by Guaido to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with the backing from the US government. Despite all the efforts, Maduro remains in power, supported by many Venezuelans and in control of its military and police forces.
Paul said he was concerned that the Latin American country may be plunged into large-scale violence by some provocation.
Comment: We can only wait to see the next move by the Empire in Venezuela. Are they so desperate they will make a martyr of the puppet they've invested so much in? It's not hard to imagine.

Mr. Barr's stolid demeanor during the Wednesday session was a refreshing reminder of what it means to be not insane in the long-running lunatic degeneration of national politics. Of course, the reason for the continued hysteria among Democrats is that the two-year solemn inquiry by the august former FBI Director, Mr. Mueller, is being revealed daily as a mendacious fraud with criminal overtones running clear through Democratic ranks beyond even the wicked Hillary Clinton to the sainted former president Obama, who may have supervised his party's collusion with foreign officials to interfere in the 2016 election.
As China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has boosted the global use of the yuan, Pakistan, which is a part of the project, has been increasingly encouraged to use the Chinese currency in its business dealings with Beijing instead of doing trade in the US dollar, the Global Times reported.
Despite the yuan skyrocketing in popularity in Southeast Asia, relatively stringent foreign exchange policies in some BRI markets are restricting the currency's internationalization in the short term.
"On the positive side, the growing pace of yuan use in BRI countries has been faster than the yuan's overall usage in the world in recent years. The trend is particularly evident in some Southeast Asian countries like Singapore", Zhou Yu, director of the Research Centre for International Finance at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, was cited as saying.
Comment: It's becoming increasingly evident to most nations that the only way to neutralize the chaos creators in the US, and to bypass their sanctioning of the planet, is to divest themselves of the dollar:

The US State Department said in a statement that a scheduled meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been cancelled.
The authorities added that the talks had to be postponed citing "pressing issues". However, the official body did not specify the reasons for calling off the meeting or provide any further details.

Comment: Guaido and his backers apparently were taken for a ride by Maduro supporters. Moon of Alabama comments that Guaido, and by extension the US, got snookered:
