Brainwashed against their own best interest: Germany puts curbing Russia ahead of commerce

merkel meeting
© Markus Schreiber/Associated PressPhoto Chancellor Angela Merkel has kept German businesses, which have strong interests in Russia, apprised of shifts in her thinking on relations with Moscow.
Over recent months, something significant has happened in Europe: In the crisis over Ukraine, Germany has assumed leadership not just in its familiar fashion of trying to coax Russia away from belligerence and bluster, but also in standing firm and imposing sanctions on Moscow even if they hurt German business.

Perhaps even more remarkable is that Germans, long anxious to preserve commercial, energy and cultural ties with their vast eastern neighbor, have gone along. Seventy percent of 1,003 adults polled last week by Infratest dimap for the public broadcaster ARD approved of stricter sanctions; just 15 percent viewed Russia as a reliable partner in a poll with a three-percentage-point margin of sampling error.

In marked contrast to France's leadership, Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government - a united "grand coalition" of center-right and center-left - have kept German businesses apprised of any shift in thinking and made it clear throughout that tougher sanctions would be imposed if Russia fell further out of line.

The political upheaval over Ukraine has already affected Germany's economy, slowing down growth and throwing into question the country's ability to sustain its long record of robust performance even amid anemic recovery elsewhere in the European Union, economists said. The sanctions that would restrict trade between the countries are likely to cause further damage.

Psychopathic Israel-trained police "occupy" Missouri after killing of black youth

The killing of Michael Brown in Missouri last weekend prompted this Chicago protest against police violence.
Since the killing of eighteen-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson police in Missouri last weekend, the people of Ferguson have been subjected to a military-style crackdown by a squadron of local police departments dressed like combat soldiers. This has prompted residents to liken the conditions on the ground in Ferguson to the Israeli military occupation of Palestine.

And who can blame them?

The dystopian scenes of paramilitary units in camouflage rampaging through the streets of Ferguson, pointing assault rifles at unarmed residents and launching tear gas into people's front yards from behind armored personnel carriers (APCs), could easily be mistaken for a Tuesday afternoon in the occupied West Bank.

And it's no coincidence.

At least two of the four law enforcement agencies that were deployed in Ferguson up until Thursday evening - the St. Louis County Police Department and the St. Louis Police Department - received training from Israeli security forces in recent years.

Order out of chaos: The doctrine that runs the world

Denver Airport Mural
© Alt-Market
From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States), this world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality, has been steadily growing.

It played, as a modern writer, Mrs. Webster, has so ably shown, a definitely recognizable part in the tragedy of the French Revolution. It has been the mainspring of every subversive movement during the Nineteenth Century; and now at last this band of extraordinary personalities from the underworld of the great cities of Europe and America have gripped the Russian people by the hair of their heads and have become practically the undisputed masters of that enormous empire."

- Winston Churchill, February 1920, in an article that appeared in the Illustrated Sunday Herald
The concept of conspiracy frightens some people, so much so that they are willing to overlook any and all evidence that world events are for the most part directed, rather than chaotic and coincidental. For those who are uneducated and unaware, explanations for the terrible tides of politics and war generally revolve around a false understanding of Occam's razor. They argue that the theory states that the "simplest explanation" is usually the correct one for any particular problem or crisis. But Occam's razor actually states that the simplest explanation according to the evidence at hand is usually the correct answer for any given problem. That is to say, the simplest explanation must conform to the evidence, or it is likely not correct.

Unfortunately, "skeptics" of directed conspiracy often turn a blind eye to evidence that is contrary to their simple explanations, while arguing that simplification is its own vindication. In other words, they don't feel the need to defend their simplistic world view because, in their minds, simplicity stands on its own as self-evident. There was a time when men believed that the planets revolved around each other because they were tied together by long glass strings, and this was evident to them because it was the simplest explanation they could come up with. The thinking of skeptics of the New World Order and concerted globalization is much like this.

Comment: The world conspiracy described here is one that is 'out of this realm', because it is beyond the ken of humans (or psychopaths, especially psychopaths) to control, direct or manage.

Putin's statements can in no way be taken to imply "avid support" for the IMF. What if he makes plain-pudding - "boring", even - statements about restructuring international finance because he knows you can't 'upset the markets' or you'll make too many enemies too fast and torpedo your efforts to bring about a fairer system in which the power of oligarchs everywhere is reined in, at least a bit?

Sorry, world conspiracy theorists, but that is the best that can be hoped for in this world.

French banking sector faces turbulent times

The French banking sector is reeling from fresh shocks after the New York Supreme Court announced it will uphold charges against Societe Generale.

British Bank Northern Rock says the French banking giant sold financial products with misleading advice before the subprime crisis started in the US. But Societe Generale says it is not responsible for products it was selling. Meanwhile, the 6.6 billion euro fine paid by another French bank BNP Paribas has led to France's national current account deficit to rise to 7.4 billion euros. That's almost double the deficit figures in May.

Local media reports show the bank's Chairman may resign in the coming months following the heaviest penalties ever paid by a French bank. These fines and court cases have made French banks watchful of where they put their feet. But seeing a total turn around within the banking sector in France may take months, if not weeks.

At a time when the French economy has officially come to a standstill, a weakened banking sector is one of the worst case scenarios of the country's economy.

Texas Gov. Perry indicted on charge of abuse of power

Austin - Gov. Rick Perry of Texas was indicted on two felony counts on Friday by a state grand jury examining his handling of a local district attorney's drunken driving arrest and the state financing for a public corruption unit under the lawyer's control.

The indictment was returned late Friday in Austin.

The investigation centered on Mr. Perry's veto power as governor. His critics asserted that he used that power as leverage to try to get an elected official and influential Democrat - Rosemary Lehmberg, the district attorney in Travis County - to step down after her arrest for drunken driving last year. Ms. Lehmberg is Austin's top prosecutor and oversees a powerful public corruption unit that investigates state, local and federal officials; its work led to the 2005 indictment of a former Republican congressman, Tom DeLay on charges of violating campaign finance laws.

Ukraine will receive reverse gas flow supplies from Slovakia but will only receive one quarter of what it usually gets from Russia

Ukrtransgaz, Ukraine's national pipeline operator, has completed all the necessary construction to accept 27 million cubic meters of gas per day from Slovakia through 2019. The operations are due to start on September 1.

All technical aspects and negotiations have been agreed upon by Ukraine's Uktransgaz and Slovakia's Eustream AS, Ukraine's state oil and gas company Naftogaz said on Wednesday.

Natural gas will flow from Slovakia to Uzhgorod, a town in western Ukraine. Though the natural gas will help Ukraine with its depleting natural gas reserves, the 27 million cubic meters is still only 1/4 of what Moscow used to send every day.

Deliveries from Slovakia could satisfy up to 20 percent of Ukraine's natural gas demand, which in 2013 was 55 billion cubic meters.

The two companies first signed a Memorandum of Understanding on April 28, 2014 to provide reverse flow gas supplies to Ukraine.

FBI scheme to entrap "terrorists" finally receives setback in Ahmad Abassi case

Image

When Ahmed Abassi arrived in the United States for the first time in March 2013, the Tunisian student settled into a historic, neo-Gothic apartment building in Manhattan's Financial District.

Unknown to him, the apartment was wired with audio recording devices, and Abassi's American host was an undercover FBI agent. Abassi, then 26 and suspected of terrorism ties, had landed in an FBI sting, part of an elaborate operation that stretched from New York to Quebec City to a small town in Tunisia.

Abassi was caught on tape discussing "the principle that America should be wiped off the face of the earth," with people he believed to be co-conspirators, one of whom was the FBI agent, according to court records. At one point, Abassi suggested "putting bacteria in the air or in a water supply."

But last month, Abassi, who declined to be interviewed, pleaded guilty to relatively minor charges that did not include any terrorism enhancements that could have sent him to prison for years, and he is not contesting a deportation order.

The case was a rare setback for the FBI and federal prosecutors, which have successfully targeted suspected terrorists using sting operations, typically ending with the defendants about to embark on what they believe is a terrorist attack with fake weapons or bombs supplied by the bureau. Guilty verdicts and long prison sentences follow.

US and Britain call off rescue of up to 30,000 stranded Iraqis after bombing ISIS

The US and Britain are stepping back from launching a risky military mission to rescue thousands of Iraqis stranded on Mount Sinjar after claiming that special forces on the ground found their condition was better than expected.

Declaring that the US bombing has succeeded in beating back forces from the Islamic State (Isis), the Pentagon said the planned rescue mission had been ruled out for the moment.

A small complement of special forces and US aid workers landed on Mount Sinjar to assess the situation of the Iraqi Yazidis - who for days have received air drops of food, water and medicine.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said late on Wednesday: "An evacuation mission is far less likely."

The decision to call off the rescue mission came as the White House declared the mission to target Isis positions in the area with four air strikes since Saturday a success. "The president's decisive decisions in the immediate wake of the crisis kept people alive and broke the siege of the mountain," a White House official said.

David Cameron said on Wednesday that Britain had planned to join the rescue mission to relieve the "desperate humanitarian" situation on the mountain. RAF Chinook helicopters were deployed to the region to help with the operation.

But Justine Greening, Britain's international development secretary, endorsed the view in Washington that the condition of the refugees was better than expected.

Comment: American aid defined: create crisis, deliver bombs, arm both sides, use humanitarian aid as an excuse, don't actually provide humanitarian aid.

UN reports Gaza agriculture decimated by Israeli offensive

Image

The Israeli military operation in Gaza has devastated the enclave's food production process the UN has announced, warning that the lack of food will "severely" affect the local population and that recovery will need "significant external assistance."

"The recent fighting has resulted in substantial direct damage to Gaza's 17,000 hectares of croplands as well as much of its agricultural infrastructure, including greenhouses, irrigation systems, animal farms, fodder stocks and fishing boats," the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in a statement.

With farming and fishing activities virtually halted after farmers, herders and fishermen were forced to flee their domains, and with the Israeli blockade imposed, Palestinians are facing food shortages.

Gaza has lost half of its population of poultry birds either from direct shelling or because the birds died from a lack of water, as the IDF bombardment destroyed Palestinian infrastructure, the World Food Programme (WFP) believes.

"Under the most recent ceasefire many farmers and herders are now able to access their lands, however resumption of food production faces serious obstacles given the damage sustained and shortage of water, electricity, inputs and financial resources, as well as ongoing uncertainty regarding the possible resumption of military activities," said Ciro Fiorillo, head of FAO's office in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Acting Like They Care: White House stops transfer of Hellfire missiles to Israel due to Gaza catastrophe

Israel's offensive in Gaza and the tremendous toll of civilian casualties it has caused has prompted the United States government to more carefully scrutinize requests for weaponry.

Last month, Israel requested "through military-to-military channels a large number of Hellfire missiles," according to the Wall Street Journal. The batch was to be the first released to Israel from the Pentagon, Israeli and US officials said.

But White House officials ordered the Pentagon to halt the transfer and instructed US defense agencies to consult with the White House and the State Department following any further Israeli requests for weaponry, according to the report.
