Liz Cheney poised to lose Republican leadership position

House Republican Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo)
Rep. Liz Cheney is poised to lose her leadership position in the House Republican conference as soon as Wednesday over her continued criticism of former President Donald Trump, putting yet another hurdle in the way of her path to reelection in Wyoming.

With 70% of Wyoming voters backing the former president in the 2020 election, Ms. Cheney's opposition to him and his leadership of the Republican Party has put her at odds with most of her constituents. Chairman of the Park County GOP, Martin Kimmet said:
"She couldn't win a dog catcher's race here. She is just not very popular and seemingly she doesn't care. She just keeps doing her own thing. She seems pretty narcissistic and above all of us poor, old cowboys out here."
But Ms. Cheney sees the Republican Party at a turning point, warning that if the base continues to follow Mr. Trump's claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, it will "do profound long-term damage to our party and our country."

House Republicans are expected to vote on removing Ms. Cheney from their leadership this week. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, a Trump loyalist, is favored to replace her.

Comment: Slip-sliding away? It would seem Cheney is heading for the door of her own volition.

Presser: Boris Johnson to hold conference offering advise on hugging, weddings and funerals

British PM Boris Johnson to allow hugging.
The Prime Minister is due to set out the rules on hugging loved ones and attending wedding and funerals in a 5pm press conference tomorrow. He is likely to tell the nation to use their "personal judgement" and "common sense" when hugging pals and family members after May 17, sources say.

Brits have been starved of embraces for over a year, and will be allowed once more to hug each other sensibly when the next stage of lockdown lifts.

At the moment anyone who doesn't live together is advised to keep at least 1.5 metres away from others to stop the spread of the virus.

But, as first revealed by The Sun it's expected that people will be told they can finally hug their close friends and family again - but social distancing rules will be expected to stay for others.

White House says Biden won't 'underestimate Trump' if he runs in 2024

White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain
White House chief of staff Ron Klain said President Biden shouldn't "estimate or underestimate" former President Trump in a potential 2024 rematch.

"I wouldn't want to estimate or underestimate Donald Trump as an opponent if he chooses to run," Klain told Axios's Mike Allen in an interview on Axios on HBO documentary series that aired Sunday.
"My experience, Mike, is that incumbent presidents are judged on their record. President Trump had a bad record in 2020. Joe Biden is hopefully assembling a powerful record to run on if he runs for reelection in 2024.
Klain's remarks suggest that the White House is anticipating a potentially tough reelection fight if Trump ultimately decides to mount a political comeback in 2024.

Comment: In other words, the fix will be in sooner than later.

Heaping blame on Hamas: The Guardian runs defense for Israel's latest provocation

Al Aqsa Mosque

Israeli forces invade the sanctuary of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem Monday, May 10, 2021, firing tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. Hundreds of Palestinians attending services were injured.

Comment: The Guardian's Holmes pens a text-book example of how the Western media distorts a story in Israel's favour. He neglects to mention the fact that Hamas launched its rockets hours after a sustained attack on, and invasion of the al-Aqsa mosque, one of the holiest sites the heart of Jerusalem, on one of the holiest days of the Islamic calendar. Israel's actions were calculated to give the maximum provocation

Read on to see how it's done.

Militant Palestinian groups in Gaza have fired rockets into Israel, with Israel responding with strikes on the Palestinian coastal enclave as tensions escalated dramatically on Monday.

The rocket attacks were launched just minutes after the passing of a Hamas-issued ultimatum for Israel to withdraw security forces from both the Jerusalem compound that is home to the al-Aqsa mosque and the Old City's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

The two locations have been the scene of increasingly violent confrontations between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in recent days that have drawn mounting international concern.

Comment: And that's how it's done. Shape the language at the opening of the piece as favorably as possible to your target audience while subtly demonizing their opponents. Report the bare minimum of facts necessary, lest you be called out for editorializing, and leave them for last. With luck your target group will never get that far.

French generals accuse Macron government of trying to 'silence' warnings of civil war

The far-right leader Marine Le Pen said she understood the sentiments of the first letter and called on the signatories to support her politics and her bid for the French presidency in 2022.
Serving members of the French military have fired a second salvo at Emmanuel Macron's government in an open letter accusing it of "cowardice, deceit, perversion", just weeks after a first letter said the country was heading for "civil war".

Like the first letter, it appears in the rightwing magazine Valeurs Actuelles. It was reportedly signed anonymously "by active military personnel" and is appended with a petition on the magazine's website for others to sign.

The letter's signatories refer to the seventh verse of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, that refers to the "avenging" slain elders or following them to "their coffins".

Comment: Gary Littlejohn for The Saker blog provides a translation of the first letter:
"For a return of the honor of our rulers": 20 generals call on Macron to defend patriotism

Translation of First Letter April 21 2021.

At the initiative of Jean-Pierre Fabre-Bernadac, career officer and manager of the site Place d'Armes [Parade Ground], around twenty generals, a hundred senior officers and more than a thousand other soldiers signed an appeal for a return honor and duty within the political class. Valeurs Actuelles [Current Values] disseminates, with their authorization, the letter imbued with conviction and commitment from these men attached to their country.

To the President,

Members of the Government,

Parliamentary Members,

The hour is serious, France is in peril, several mortal dangers threaten her. We who, even in retirement, remain soldiers of France, cannot, in the current circumstances, remain indifferent to the fate of our beautiful country.

Our tricolor flags are not just a piece of cloth, they symbolize the tradition, down through the ages, of those who, whatever their skin color or faith, have served France and given their lives for it. On these flags we find in gold letters the words "Honor and Fatherland". However, our honor today lies in the denunciation of the disintegration which strikes our homeland.

- Disintegration which, through a certain anti-racism, is displayed with a single goal: to create on our soil unease, even hatred between communities. Today some speak of racialism, indigenous identity and decolonising theories, but through these terms it is racial war that these hateful and fanatic supporters want. They despise our country, its traditions, its culture, and want to see it dissolve by taking away its past and its history. Thus they attack, through statues, ancient military and civilian glories by analyzing words that are centuries old.

- Disintegration which, with Islamism and the suburban hordes, leads to the detachment of multiple parcels of the nation to transform them into territories subject to dogmas contrary to our constitution. However, every Frenchman, whatever his belief or his non-belief, is at home everywhere in France; there cannot and must not exist any city or district where the laws of the Republic do not apply.

- Disintegration, because hatred takes precedence over brotherhood during demonstrations where the authorities use the police as proxy agents and scapegoats in the face of French people in yellow vests expressing their despair. This while undercover and hooded individuals ransack businesses and threaten these same law enforcement agencies. However, the latter only apply the directives, sometimes contradictory, given by you, the rulers.

The perils are mounting, the violence is increasing day by day. Who would have predicted ten years ago that a professor would one day be beheaded when he left college? However, we, servants of the Nation, who have always been ready to put our skin at the forefront of our engagement - as our military state demanded, cannot be passive spectators in the face of such actions.

It is therefore imperative that those who run our country find the courage to eradicate these dangers. To do this, it is often enough to apply existing laws without weakness. Remember that, like us, a large majority of our fellow citizens are overwhelmed by your dawdling and culpable silences.

As Cardinal Mercier, Primate of Belgium, said: "When prudence is everywhere, courage is nowhere." So, ladies and gentlemen, enough procrastination, the hour is serious, the work is colossal; do not waste time and know that we are ready to support policies which will take into consideration the safeguarding of the nation.

On the other hand, if nothing is done, laxity will continue to spread inexorably in society, ultimately causing an explosion and the intervention of our active comrades in a perilous mission of protecting our civilizational values and safeguarding our compatriots on the national territory.

As we can see, there is no more time to procrastinate, otherwise, tomorrow the civil war will put an end to this growing chaos, and the deaths, for which you will bear the responsibility, will number in the thousands.

The signatory generals:

General de Corps d'Armée (ER) Christian PIQUEMAL (Foreign Legion), General de Corps d'Armée (2S) Gilles BARRIE (Infantry), General of Division (2S) François GAUBERT former Military Governor of Lille, General of Division (2S) ) Emmanuel de RICHOUFFTZ (Infantry), Division General (2S) Michel JOSLIN DE NORAY (Marine Troops), Brigadier General (2S) André COUSTOU (Infantry), Brigadier General (2S) Philippe DESROUSSEAUX de MEDRANO (Train), Air Brigade General (2S) Antoine MARTINEZ (Air Force), Air Brigade General (2S) Daniel GROSMAIRE (Air Force), Brigadier General (2S) Robert JEANNEROD (Cavalry), Brigadier General ( 2S) Pierre Dominique AIGUEPERSE (Infantry), Brigadier General (2S) Roland DUBOIS (Transmissions), Brigadier General (2S) Dominique DELAWARDE (Infantry), Brigadier General (2S) Jean Claude GROLIER (Artillery), Brigadier General ( 2S) Norbert de CACQUERAY (Directorate General of Armament), Brigadier General (2S) Roger PRIGEN T (ALAT), Brigadier General (2S) Alfred LEBRETON (CAT), General Doctor (2S) Guy DURAND (Army Health Service), Rear Admiral (2S) Gérard BALASTRE (Navy).

Tribune of the Generals: 2,000 active soldiers are about to sign a new text.

Two weeks after the publication, in the columns of Valeurs Actuelles [Current Values], of an alarmist column signed by twenty retired generals, nearly 2,000 active soldiers are about to sign a new platform.

Almost a month after its initial publication on the site "Place d´Armes"[Parade Ground], and two weeks after its reprise in the columns of Valeurs Actuelles, the now famous Tribune of the Generals could well have children. The first text, entitled "For a return to the honor of our rulers", was signed by twenty retired generals. If the platform impacted public opinion, by the strength of the positions asserted by the military, the executive quickly reassured itself by mocking a platform of factionists in Charente, "cut off from the reality of the army". A fragile defense, which should be contradicted by the next publication of a second platform ... this time signed by nearly 2,000 active soldiers.

The executive particularly worried

Le Parisien [The Parisian], which got wind of this new initiative, echoes a certain concern at the top of the state. "A forum signed this time by 2,000 active, anonymous soldiers", a heavyweight of the Macronie slips into the daily Ile-de-France newspaper. "That's ch ...", states another adviser to the President of the Republic, getting carried away, an adviser who fears that the recent explosion of news items will put heavy pressure on the executive, before the presidential election of 2022. On the side of the General Staff, the atmosphere nevertheless seems calmer. If the announcement of this new platform has effectively risen to the top of the military hierarchy, a source from Le Parisien prefers to minimize the matter: "Let's wait and see, but even if a platform ends up coming out, if it is anonymous, frankly, and then, what good is it? ", specifies the soldier, who also denounces a" big political manipulation ". Especially, he adds, if the column is published again in Valeurs Actuelles...

A more measured text?

It is indeed in the columns of Valeurs Actuelles that military personnel worried about the future of the country they serve should continue to express themselves. The information was also confirmed by our editorial director, Geoffroy Lejeune, to journalists from Le Parisien. If the text, the drafting of which is not yet quite completed, should perfectly agree with the finding of disintegration made by the generals of the previous forum, it should however clarify the most controversial points. In particular, active military personnel - all anonymous - should be particularly clear about "the role of the military". "The text does not in any way suggest that there could be a seizure of power by this institution," confirms Geoffroy Lejeune at Le Parisien. Not sure that this is enough to disarm those who, for the past two weeks, have fantasized about the threat of a putsch the better to ignore the root of the problem.
Ultimately, the issue of mass migration and the deterioration of living standards lies with recent successive governments, and, if the Yellow Vest protests are anything to go by, a significant majority of people agree. This is also probably partly why the current government just passed a draconian 'Global Security Law', that was met with large protests, that allows 'broad surveillance of the population'.

Nasrallah
Address of Hezbollah Secretary General, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, on May 5, 2021, as part of the joint speech of the leaders of the Axis of Resistance, in anticipation of the International Day of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) celebrated on May 7 2021.

This International Day was inaugurated by Imam Khomeini in 1979, the year of the triumph of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, to revive the Palestinian cause, and is celebrated on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

The military leaders of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, AnsarAllah in Yemen and the Hashd al-Cha'bi in Iraq, as well as religious dignitaries such as the Imam of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Patriarch of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church and Sheikh Issa Qassem of Bahrain, along with other personalities, spoke during this virtual conference. Nasrallah's intervention lasted only a quarter of an hour, while his speech on Al-Quds Day lasted almost an hour.

[..] There are negative developments, like the wave of normalization (of relations with Israel). When some Arab countries move towards normalization, it means that the rest of Arabs and Muslims, the rest of the countries and the living forces in the Islamic Community (Umma), must raise their voices even higher. This leads to greater responsibility: this negative point leads to more responsibility, more presence, and more expression of our position (condemning and) fighting the normalization process.

Why did Hezbollah announce a general mobilization in Lebanon?

massive military drill
Israel begins Sunday 9th May with a massive military drill "Chariots of Fire" involving all branches of the military and tens of thousands of soldiers and officers, on the border with Lebanon. This massive maneuver has led to a general mobilization within the ranks of Hezbollah for any scenario in which the military maneuver could eventually turn into war.

There are essential points behind Hezbollah's general mobilization that the leadership considers in light of the current situation:

First, the absence of a government in Israel gives Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu absolute freedom to decide whatever he wants, to increase his electoral chances. Israeli politicians failed to form a government following four consecutive domestic elections. It seems there are strong possibilities that a fifth election may be on the agenda. Netanyahu is facing corruption accusations, and only by remaining in power can he escape jail. Second, Israel overcame the Corona pandemic quickly, as 85 per cent of the Israeli army took the vaccine and 75 per cent of civil society. This prevents potential casualties inside the Israeli military when mixing takes place during the massive maneuvers.

Antony Blinken continues to lecture the world on values his administration aggressively violates

Blinen Assange

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks on the importance of independent journalism, May 6, 2021 (Radio Free Europe); Julian Assange arrives at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London in his attempt to resist extradition by the Biden administration
How can you feign anger over others' attacks on a free press when you imprison Assange as punishment for his vital revelations about U.S. officials?

Continuing his world tour doling out righteous lectures to the world, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday proclaimed — in a sermon you have to hear to believe — that few things are more sacred in a democracy than "independent journalism." Speaking to Radio Free Europe, Blinken paid homage to "World Press Freedom Day"; claimed that "the United States stands strongly with independent journalism"; explained that "the foundation of any democratic system" entails "holding leaders accountable" and "informing citizens"; and warned that "countries that deny freedom of the press are countries that don't have a lot of confidence in themselves or in their systems."

The rhetorical cherry on top of that cake came when he posed this question: "What is to be afraid of in informing the people and holding leaders accountable?" The Secretary of State then issued this vow: "Everywhere journalism and freedom of the press is challenged, we will stand with journalists and with that freedom." Since I know that I would be extremely skeptical if someone told me that those words had just come out Blinken's mouth, I present you here with the unedited one-minute-fifty-two-second video clip of him saying exactly this:

Israel helped US track Qasem Soleimani using cell phone

Israel gave the US access to multiple cellphone numbers for former top Iranian official Qasem Soleimani to help enable his assassination in January 2020, Yahoo News reported on Saturday night. Soleimani was the former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force chief.

The Jerusalem Post has previously reported that Israel's role in the assassination was far greater than had been revealed. For example, according to foreign reports, Israel was instrumental in keeping the idea of removing Soleimani as an option despite resistance by some of the US defense establishment. Internal US debates are described in the Yahoo article.

Soleimani's vehicle and a second accompanying vehicle were destroyed by US drones after he flew into Iraq from Damascus.
According to Yahoo News:
"in the six hours before Soleimani boarded his flight from Damascus, the Iranian general switched cellphones three times, according to a US military official.

"In Tel Aviv, US Joint Special Operations Command liaisons worked with their Israeli counterparts to help track Soleimani's cellphone patterns. The Israelis, who had access to Soleimani's numbers, passed them off to the Americans, who traced Soleimani and his current phone to Baghdad."
