Nanny State Nancy: Pelosi says 'honor system' is not sufficient to believe 'someone is vaccinated'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Thursday she believes the "honor system" is not sufficient to know if "someone is vaccinated."

While explaining the dangers of being unvaccinated while serving as a member in the House, despite her mask wearing rules and vaccination, Pelosi rhetorically asked, "What is this, the honor system?" She continued, "The honor system, as to whether someone has been vaccinated? Do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor?"

Comment: Whether a person is vaccinated or not is really none of her business.

Pelosi's comments comes after White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked during a press conference on May 17 whether it is "worrisome" for businesses "to be operating on an honor system, that it could put kids or even immune-compromised Americans at risk?"

How an exiled mafia boss rose to the center of Turkish politics and why it appears to be tolerated

Sedat Peker is seen in a video uploaded to YouTube, May 16, 2021.
An ultranationalist mafia boss, Sedat Peker, who had connections with the ruling elite for decades, now wages war against top officials with his camera and tripod from abroad.

In the turbulent 1990s, corruption involving an intricate network of top government officials and underworld figures — labeled the "deep state" — became synonymous with Turkey's name and image globally. But after the turn of the century, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, promising to curtail corruption, rose to power — first as prime minister, later as president.

In the last couple of years, mafia figures — many with ultranationalist backgrounds — have made a gradual return to public view on various platforms. One is Alaattin Cakici, who was released from prison last year as part of a parole eligibility bill that aimed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus in penitentiaries. Shortly after his release, Cakici issued a public letter threatening Turkey's main opposition leader.

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) on Friday called on the leaders of the Democratic Party to join her in condemning the "blatant anti-white racism" Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot showed by allowing only journalists of color to interview her.

"Mayor Lightfoot's blatant anti-white racism is abhorrent. I call upon President Biden, Kamala Harris, and other leaders of our county — of all races — to join me in calling for Mayor Lightfoot's resignation. Our leaders must condemn all racism, including anti-white," Gabbard tweeted.

Comment: How has Chicago fared under Lightfoot's enlightened guidance?

President Joe Biden is directing federal agencies to develop a comprehensive strategy to identify and manage financial risks to government and the private sector posed by climate change.

An executive order Biden issued Thursday calls for concrete steps to mitigate climate risks, while protecting workers' life savings, spurring job creation and helping the United States lower greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

New regulations could be issued on the banking, housing and agriculture sectors, among others.

Biden has made slowing climate change a top priority and has set a target to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by up to 52% below 2005 levels by 2030. He also has said he expects to adopt a clean energy standard that would make electricity carbon-free by 2035, along with the wider goal of net-zero carbon emissions economywide by 2050.

Comment: Biden the Weather Slayer! How does anyone slow down weather? Hot or cold - it is the financial climate that is the bottom line. Mother Earth takes care of herself.

The executive order directs White House climate adviser Gina McCarthy and economic adviser Brian Deese to develop a government-wide strategy within six months to identify and disclose climate-related financial risks. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and the White House Office of Management and Budget also would be involved, while the Labor Department will analyze how to protect pensions from climate-related risk.

House passes $1.9 billion post-Jan. 6 security spending bill by one vote

A $1.9 billion post-Jan. 6 riot security funding bill passed by just one vote Thursday in the Democratic-led House, with two Republican members missing the vote.

Member of the House Democrats' progressive wing including Rep. Ilhan Omar joined Republican members in voting against the bill, which passed 213-212. However, progressive stalwarts Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of New York, voted present.

House members are able to vote by proxy in lieu of in-person voting due to rule changes passed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, two Republican members, Rep. John Carter, of Texas, and Rep. Daniel Webster, of Florida, missed the vote, according to the roll call. Every other Republican voted against the measure. Following the vote, Omar, of Minnesota, said: "I vote on principles and I just could not justify this."

The supplemental security bill was drafted in response to the Jan. 6 riot. According to the House Appropriations Committee majority, the bill includes new security measures such as "creating a dedicated Quick Reaction Force to augment the Capitol Police in cases of emergency" and the installation of a retractable fence around the Capitol building.

Ontario judge rules Iran shot down plane full of Canadians intentionally in act of terrorism, threatens to seize Iranian assets

Wreckage of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752
Iran intentionally shot down an airliner packed with Canadian citizens and residents more than a year ago in an act of terrorism, an Ontario judge has ruled, adding judicial heft to allegations the crash was not just a tragic accident.

The decision issued Thursday opens the door to an unusual legal spectacle — a civil jury of six ordinary Canadians deciding how much compensation the Middle Eastern power must pay victims of Flight PS752.

The plaintiffs asked in their statement of claim for $1.5 billion.

Mark Arnold, the Toronto lawyer handling the case, said:
"When those people were killed on that plane, that was a community event. This is an event affecting all of us and it is appropriate and right for the community to decide in its wisdom what the compensation should be. Iran did not defend the suit, the court declaring it 'in default'."
The jury hearing on damages is likely to take place within the next three months, Arnold said. The biggest challenge, however, will be collecting whatever compensation the jurors award from a country that has said it does not recognize Canadian legal proceedings over the crash, said the lawyer.
"We will seize and sell any Iranian assets worldwide that we can get our hands on. Oil tankers full of oil heading to Venezuela, Gibraltar, South Korea, Thailand, Australia. We will invoke the assistance of any foreign court that might assist us.... It is possible to do. Takes a lot of work but it's possible to do."

Pointing out the difference between a Russian recruiting ad and a "woke" one recently rolled out by the US Army earned Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) a torrent of criticism from Democrats, neocons and Twitter's Russiagate #Resistance.

"Holy crap. Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea..." Cruz tweeted on Thursday in relation to a video combining a Russian Army recruitment ad with a recent US Army one.

Ukrainian opposition leader facing treason charges denies he's 'pro-Russia' - insists he represents millions of ordinary voters

Viktor Medvedchuk attends a court hearing in Kyiv, Ukraine May 13, 2021.
The head of Ukraine's largest opposition party, Viktor Medvedchuk, has railed against Kiev's decision to prosecute him for 'high treason,' insisting the charges are politically motivated and a reaction to his growing popularity.

Speaking at a court hearing in the Ukrainian capital on Friday, the MP rejected allegations that he is an agent of Russian influence in the country, arguing instead that he represents a significant portion of the electorate that are unhappy with the current government. "I completely throw out accusations of so-called pro-Russianness," he said. "Our party received millions of votes of confidence during the last elections." He added that recent polls had shown his party, Opposition Platform - For Life, has significantly increased its standing with the electorate.

Comment: It's rather telling that the evidence isn't more forthcoming, because this is a rather common tactic these days, to accuse an opponent as being 'pro-Russia' as a way to discredit them, simply because they refuse to adopt the pro-Western, anti-Russia narrative; as is the case currently with Czech President Milos Zeman, who is also being threatened with high treason:

Hungary will lift most remaining COVID-19 restrictions, including a night-time curfew, as soon as the number of those vaccinated reaches 5 million this weekend, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on May 21.

In his weekly interview with state radio, Orban said masks would no longer need to be worn in public, and gatherings of up to 500 people could be held in the open air. Events in closed spaces will be open to those with vaccination cards, he said.

"This means we have defeated the third wave of the pandemic," Orban said, adding that the time has come to say "goodbye to masks" in public places.

South African-born entrepreneur Elon Musk has revealed his admiration for the USSR's space program and its achievements, telling Russian students he had named some of his company's conference rooms after Soviet engineers.

Speaking to the New Knowledge event via video link on Friday, the creator of SpaceX noted his reverence for Sergey Korolev and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, two influential 20th-century pioneers.

"[Tsiolkovsky] was amazing. He was truly one of the greatest," the entrepreneur said. "At SpaceX, we name our conference rooms after the great engineers and scientists of space, and one of our biggest conference rooms is named after Tsiolkovsky. And [another after] Korolev."
