Shrinking liberties - Will our freedoms survive another presidential election?

"Never has our future been more unpredictable, never have we depended so much on political forces that cannot be trusted to follow the rules of common sense and self-interest—forces that look like sheer insanity, if judged by the standards of other centuries." ― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

The field of 2016 presidential candidates includes 16 Republicans and five Democrats.
Adding yet another layer of farce to an already comical spectacle, the 2016 presidential election has been given its own reality show. Presented by Showtime, The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth will follow the various presidential candidates from now until Election Day.

As if we need any more proof that politics in America has been reduced to a three-ring circus complete with carnival barkers, acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, lion tamers, animal trainers, tight rope walkers, freaks, strong men, magicians, snake charmers, fire eaters, sword swallowers, knife throwers, ringmasters and clowns.

Truly, who needs bread and circuses when you have the assortment of clowns and contortionists that are running for the White House?

No matter who wins the presidential election come November, it's a sure bet that the losers will be the American people.

Despite what is taught in school and the propaganda that is peddled by the media, the 2016 presidential election is not a populist election for a representative. Rather, it's a gathering of shareholders to select the next CEO, a fact reinforced by the nation's archaic electoral college system.

Anyone who believes that this election will bring about any real change in how the American government does business is either incredibly naïve, woefully out-of-touch, or oblivious to the fact that as an in-depth Princeton University study shows, we now live in an oligarchy that is "of the rich, by the rich and for the rich."

When a country spends close to $5 billion to select what is, for all intents and purposes, a glorified homecoming king or queen to occupy the White House, while 46 million of its people live in poverty, nearly 300,000 Americans are out of work, and more than 500,000 Americans are homeless, that's a country whose priorities are out of step with the needs of its people.

As author Noam Chomsky rightly observed, "It is important to bear in mind that political campaigns are designed by the same people who sell toothpaste and cars."

In other words, we're being sold a carefully crafted product by a monied elite who are masters in the art of making the public believe that they need exactly what is being sold to them, whether it's the latest high-tech gadget, the hottest toy, or the most charismatic politician.

As political science professor Gene Sharp notes in starker terms, "Dictators are not in the business of allowing elections that could remove them from their thrones."

West again meddling in Libya by stepping up military intervention under the guise of fighting "terrorists"

NATO destruction of Libya
Washington and its NATO allies are stepping up more military involvement in this devastated North African country, now experiencing an uptick in terrorist activity, in some kind of macabre reprise of the classic comedy routine Laurel & Hardy.

Earlier this week, Libya's skirmishing factions announced that they were forming a new "national unity government". The administration, backed by the United Nations, was forged from two erstwhile self-appointed rival governments based in the western city of Tripoli and the eastern city of Tobruk.

But the chances of implementing national governance remain wafer-slim. The real power in the country resides with a plethora of warring militias that have an overlapping relationship with the Islamic State terror group and have carved up the country into fiefdoms.

One reason for why the "unity government" was hastily and unconvincingly formed this week is that it gives a fig leaf of legality for greater Western military intervention in Libya under the guise of helping "the authorities" to fight jihadist terrorists.

US Empire imploding in T minus... China and Djibouti agree on logistics of new military base

camp lemonnier

'Sorry but now your base is belong to us'
China and Djibouti have "reached consensus" regarding the construction of logistical facilities in the African state. The deal that has been hinted at for months has finally been confirmed.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said Thursday that the new facility will give logistical support to China's fleet that performs escort duties in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast.

Since May 2015, there were reports on possible talks between Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh with the Chinese over a possible military base. China's Foreign Ministry confirmed the negotiations for the first time in November of last year.

Comment: Why is this significant?

90% of world trade passes through the Red Sea and the Strait of Malacca, which is why Europeans (and then Americans) have controlled these two chokepoints for so long.

But not for much longer.

Fascism quantified: Nearly half of all retired Congress members become lobbyists

congress for sale
As a member of the U.S. Congress, one can expect to earn a substantial income of $174,000 per year - a very comfortable sum to live on. But it doesn't stop there, now legislators are frequently using their political careers as a stepping-stone to a much larger payday upon retirement, often quintupling their income as an industry lobbyist.

Three political scientists have tracked data all the way back to 1976 to analyze the lobbying activity of former members of Congress in an eye-opening new study.

The results of the study, "Who walks through the revolving door? Examining the lobbying activity of former members of Congress," appearing in the journal Interest Groups & Advocacy, make clear that there has been a substantial increase in the number of members becoming lobbyists after retirement.

The agreement reached by Italian oil and gas engineering company Saipem and the National Iranian Gas Company during President Rouhani's visit to Italy is remarkable both for its economic and political benefits, energy expert Omid Shokri Kalehsar told Sputnik.

On Monday Italian oil and gas engineering contractor Saipem and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on major oil and gas projects in Iran.

The two companies came to the agreement during the course of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit to Italy, and signed the memorandum in the presence of Rouhani and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Belgian paper reports state security services knew about terror cell involved in Paris attacks for over three years

Belgian security services knew about the terrorist cell responsible for the fatal Paris attacks in November 2015 for over three years, local paper reports.

Brussels-based Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN) newspaper claims to have come in possession of a security service paper dating April 2012, which indicated some suspicious activity in an apartment in the Brussels district of Molenbeek.

The officers recorded residents discussing possible attacks against Western democracy and ways to acquire explosives and weapons. The cell members also traveled to Syria several times, the paper says.

The apartment belonged to Gelel Attar, currently in detention over suspicion of being directly involved in Paris terror attacks on November 13 last year.

Comment: Perhaps the Belgian security services allowed the attacks to happen to further the tightening of security in the EU and continue the West's plan of demonizing Muslims:

Russian security chief: Washington wants to weaken Russia and dominate the world

Washington does not want to see a strong Russia and wants to weaken it as much as possible, not excluding a break-up of the country, national security chief Nikolay Patrushev has told a Russian daily.

"The US leadership has set an objective - to dominate the world. Therefore they don't need a strong Russia. On the contrary, they want to weaken our country as much as possible," the head of Russia's Security Council said in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda published Tuesday.

Patrushev added that in reaching that objective the US does not exclude even the disintegration of Russia to gain access to its lucrative natural resources. "Washington believes it could become a catalyst in this [disintegration] process."

Moscow is concerned with NATO's military buildup and delegation to the alliance of certain global functions in open violation of the international law, he said.

Comment: The Russians clearly know the score, both of the intent of the US government against them and the US stranglehold over NATO and Europe.

How generous of them: German government offers politicians opportunity to peruse secret TTIP documents

In a response to criticism of covert TTIP negotiations, German politicians will soon be able to get a look at the secret documents in a special reading room at the Ministry for Economic Affairs.

The German government has reacted to criticism of secretive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations by providing a reading room in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, where politicians will be able to read TTIP documents.

TTIP is a bilateral trade agreement between the EU and US that aims to reduce regulatory barriers to trade. In practice, the deregulation threatens the dismantling of legal standards in areas such as privacy, environmental protections, food safety, public health and safety at work. It also strengthens copyright and patent restrictions which, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, "would never pass muster under public scrutiny."

Israeli Defense Minister: Daesh funded with Turkish money

Israel's defense minister has alleged that the Islamic State terror group has long been funded with "Turkish money."

"As you know, Daesh (Islamic State, previously ISIS/ISIL) enjoyed Turkish money for oil for a very, very long period of time. I hope that it will be ended," Moshe Yaalon told reporters in Athens on Tuesday after meeting his Greek counterpart, Panos Kammenos, Reuters reports.

"It's up to Turkey, the Turkish government, the Turkish leadership, to decide whether they want to be part of any kind of cooperation to fight terrorism. This is not the case so far," he said.

Earlier, Russia had accused Turkey of shady dealings with ISIS. In December, the Russian Defense Ministry released maps and satellite images it said proved that Turkey was the main consumer of oil smuggled out of Syria and Iraq by the terrorists. The ministry also claimed that the Turkish president and his family were involved in the criminal dealings.

Allure of the authoritarian: The REAL Donald Trump - Fascinating interview from 1990

Donald trump
In 1990, Donald Trump conducted a lengthy interview with Playboy Magazine. It provides an absolutely fascinating window into the man's mind, which I suggest everyone read in full. Unexpectedly, I came away with a more informed and nuanced perspective on the man. While it didn't change my opinion of him as President, I do have a much greater appreciation for Donald Trump as a person, specifically how his mind works and what drives him.

I originally came across this interview after seeing a tweet referencing a 25 year old interview during which Trump expressed admiration for how strongly Chinese authorities cracked down on dissent in Tiananmen Square in 1989. I immediately thought to myself that this would be the perfect fodder to further elucidate the kind of cold, brutal, authoritarian leader Trump undoubtedly would be as President.

While that particular quote didn't disappoint, I decided to read further and came away with many additional observations. I think these observations are worth sharing since I think there's a very real chance Trump will be elected President within the next ten years. His chances ride on the fact that the current system is terminally corrupt, as well as socially and economically bankrupt. It will crash and burn, whether in slow motion like the past eight years, or very rapidly over the next several. Someone will likely step in to fill this void, and Trump has the personality type and understanding of human nature to possibly propel himself into the position when the timing is right. Is the time right in 2016? Probably not, but a President Trump is far more likely to occur in our lifetimes than many of us want to admit.

Comment: Trump has the traits of a Right Wing Authoritarian and checks many of the box of a full blown narcissist. Only time will tell if TPTB allow Trump to be 'elected.' The American people look to be so far gone that they would follow someone who is offering solutions at any cost given the mess psychopaths have made of the United States. This echos the rise of Hitler in a Germany desperate for change and solutions after suffering severe social and economic problems in the Weimar Republic. Along with this, given that there are echos of the destruction of a large portion of the Jewish people during WWII with the current day maltreatment and demonization of Muslims should give us all pause.
