While Trump wants to pull out of Syria, the military wants the opposite

Last week, Trump said that the United States would leave Syria "very soon," however, CNN reported that this decision is probably opposed by some high-ranking officials in the president's administration.

Incoming US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph Dunford have recommended that President Donald Trump not immediately withdraw troops from Syria, as the move would go against national interests, local media reported on Thursday.

Comment: Being in Syria was always for US national interests.

According to the CNN broadcaster, which cited officials familiar with the matter, during Trump's Tuesday meeting with US security officials, Pompeo and Dunford advised the president against an immediate withdrawal of troops from Syria.

Upon Trump complaining of the amount of money the United States is spent on operations in Syria and Iraq without gaining anything in return, the officials said that an immediate withdrawal would be a mistake, as it would allow Russia, Turkey and Iran to freely pursue their own interests in the region, something which runs counter to the US agenda.

Comment: Trump has a fight on his hands. Hopefully he will stand his ground. It is time to stop 'agenda wars' in someone else's country.

Iran's Defense Minister Hatami: US attempted to play 'controlled chaos' amongst Muslim nations and lost

Iranian Defense Minister, Amir Hatami
The rise and fall of Islamic State in Syria was a classic game of US 'controlled chaos' in the region, Tehran believes. The Middle East needs to block such meddling with new security architecture, based on mutual dependence.

Today the Middle East is in constant turmoil because several key players like Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran are in a constant antagonistic confrontation with one another. This situation only fosters extremism and prevents regional integration, which allows foreign players like the United States stir trouble in the region while pursuing its self-interest, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami told a security conference in Moscow.

Unless the Muslims of the region are able to overcome their differences, they will be victimized, the Iranian official said. The current transition of the world towards multipolarity, which tilts the balance of power away from the West, offers a chance to do that.
"The most important result of the change is the transition of political and economic power from the Western hemisphere to the Eastern one, from the Atlantic to East Asia. For the first time in four centuries [changes] are not dependent on West's will only," he said.

Comment: Defense Minister Hatami is calling out the sins of the West, with conference attendees in consensus. The times have changed for Western hegemony and the shrinking exit window should be respected and utilized wisely.

Lawyer Alex van der Zwaan is jailed for 30 days, Mueller's first conviction

Alexander van der Zwaan
A Dutch attorney was sentenced on Tuesday to 30 days in prison for lying to federal agents, in the first formal conviction obtained by Robert Mueller in his investigation of Russian election interference and alleged collusion between aides to Donald Trump and Moscow.

A federal judge in Washington sentenced Alex van der Zwaan, a 33-year-old lawyer who previously worked with Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager. He was also ordered to pay a $20,000 fine.

Van der Zwaan had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with another former Trump adviser, Rick Gates, and a person the FBI has assessed as being tied to Russian military intelligence.

Although the Dutchman was the fourth person to plead guilty in the Mueller probe, he was first to be formally sentenced. Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos have entered plea deals.

A former lawyer at the prominent firm Skadden Arps, Van der Zwaan worked on a 2012 report commissioned by Manafort to defend former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych from international criticism.

Comment: Van der Zwaan's incarceration is meant as 'an example' to influence future testimonies. Nice little blemish on his record, too. His actions, so far, have nothing to do with the Russiagate investigation.

Tillerson spent $12M on consultants as part of State Dept overhaul

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson
Consultants costing up to $300 an hour were engaged as Rex Tillerson tried to revamp the State Department. With Tillerson gone, the future of the redesign is uncertain, but taxpayers have already picked up the $12 million tab.

Politico has revealed the figures, citing documents it obtained, and said they were partly confirmed by a State Department spokesperson. As many as 90 consultants worked on the project, which was aimed to make the State Department more modern and cost-effective. Their tasks included meeting with officials, collecting and analyzing data, creating presentations, and leading group discussions to help meet Tillerson's vision of a State Department redesign.

Comment: Overhauling an obsolete State Department is beneficial and cost-effectiveness is spread forward. At least this project was geared to upgrade service to the public for its dollar spent, unlike the money-eating machines we know as the military and the disservice of a good portion of a part-time Congress.

President Donald Trump's approval ratings keep rising, according to the latest Rasmussen poll.

On Wednesday, Rasmussen's daily tracking poll showed that 51 percent of likely U.S. voters approved of President Trump's job performance. Forty-eight percent disapproved.

This is the best rating for Trump since April of the first year of his presidency.

The new milestone occurs just two days after Trump's popularity jumped to 50 percent in Monday's daily tracking poll.

According to Rasmussen, Obama was at 46 percent on April 4 of 2010, the second year of his presidency.

Rasmussen's daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night and an online survey tool of random participants. It is reported on a three-day rolling average basis. The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 1,500 Likely Voters is +/- 2.5 percentage points.

Lavrov: US policy of lowering the threshold of using nukes causes 'deepest concern'

Russia is worried the US could respond with nuclear weapons to a wider range of circumstances and that its priorities lie in establishing "military supremacy and upsetting parity" when it comes to "strategic stability."

"The US policy of lowering the threshold of using nuclear weapons causes the deepest concern," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the Moscow Conference on International Security. Washington's latest Nuclear Posture Review expands a number of scenarios in which a nuclear response would be considered.

The US is also planning to replace outdated ballistic missiles with new, less powerful nuclear warheads to have them available and ready to give a "flexible response."

NATO's growing military activity near the borders of Russia and further efforts to deploy missile defense systems there is another worrisome factor for Moscow. "In the sphere of strategic stability, Washington attaches priority to gaining military supremacy and upsetting parity," he said.

Target 2 and Eurobonds could lead to EU's dead end

George Soros

It's remarkable that the Euro and the Eurozone currency grouping hasn't fallen apart until now. Greece could have done it in 2010 but it was avoided by extraordinary acts of the Euro governments and European Central Bank. Now those actions are coming back to haunt especially Germany who stands poised to become the "sugar daddy" of the debt-bloated southern Euro states such as Italy or Spain. This is one major reason that the anti-Brussels parties that triumphed in recent Italian elections-5-Star and Lega, suddenly dropped talk about leaving the Euro. They are betting that Macron and Markel and their proposed new EU architecture will pull their debt chestnuts out of the fire at expense of German taxpayers. It's a timebomb ticking ever louder.

Ten years into the greatest financial meltdown in the history of finance, triggered by the USA sub-prime real estate bubble collapse in 2007, the Euro and its 19 member central banks are at a dangerous crossroad. It's clear from her recent address to the German Parliament that Chancellor Merkel intends to lure Germany into what she and Macron intend to become a "transfer union." In plain English that would mean the strong surplus economies of Germany and northern Europe including Holland, would have to "transfer" hundreds of billions of Euros to subsidize the deficit countries of Italy, Spain and southern Europe. The ultimate winner would be the shaky French and Southern Eurozone banks. It's not surprising that Merkel, a close ally of former banker Marcon of France, is not being open with her people on what is at stake.

Target 2 Trap

In 2011, in the wake of the manipulated Greek bond crisis that triggered a Eurozone contagion panic in markets, the European Central Bank initiated a highly controversial and poorly understood disguised bailout known as Target 2.Without getting into the complex details of how Target 2 central bank balances function, they in effect allow the central banks of the Eurozone crisis countries, led by Italy and Spain, to issue state bonds which are in effect taken by the strong central banks of the Euro, notably Germany's Bundesbank. Since 2011 and the Greek crisis, Target 2 balances have been growing phenomenally to where today the total is estimated for the Bundesbank alone at € 914 billion. This is about one third of German GDP.

UK admits terrorists they funded to topple Gaddafi also likely responsible for Manchester bombing

The British government has said for the first time that members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group - widely suspected to be behind the Manchester bombing - were likely among those they supported in Libya to topple Muammar Gaddafi.

In a written answer to a parliamentary question the British government has admitted that the British-sponsored jihadist militias in Libya in 2011 'likely' included members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG). The question was tabled by Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who asked whether the government was in communication with members of LIFG during the effort to bring down Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alistair Burt responded on April 3, writing, "During the Libyan conflict in 2011 the British Government was in communication with a wide range of Libyans involved in the conflict against the Qaddafi regime forces. It is likely that this included former members of Libyan Islamic Fighting Group."

Big surprise: UK govt lies about Novichok, covers it up, lies some more

may johnson broken glass
© Sott.net
It's Not The Crime, It's The Cover-Up:
When a scandal breaks, the discovery of an attempt to cover up is often regarded as even more reprehensible than the original deeds.
The British government is trying to cover-up the lies it made with its false allegations against Russia. The cover-up necessitates new lies some of which we expose below.

Yesterday the head of the British chemical weapon laboratory in Porton Down stated that the laboratory can not establish that the poison used in the alleged 'Novichok' attack in Salisbury was produced by Russia. This was a severe blow to the British government allegations of Russian involvement in the poisoning of Sergej and Yulia Skripal.

Now the British government tries to hide that it said that the poison used in the Salisbury was 'produced in Russia' and that Porton down had proved that to be the case. The government aligned media are helping to stuff the government lies down the memory hole.

We all need to make sure that the new lies get exposed and that the attempts to change the record fail.

Comment: What else is the UK government lying about? Well, if they open their mouths, it would probably be wise to assume they're lying.

The three most important points of the Skirpal case: Rush to judgment, ignoring the law, contradictions

boris johnson
I have now asked a total of 50 questions around the Skripal case, which you can find here and here. Having gone back through these questions, as far as I can see only three have been answered by the release of public information or events that have transpired. These are:
  • Are they (Sergei and Yulia Skripal) still alive?
  • If so, what is their current condition and what symptoms are they displaying?
  • Can the government confirm that its scientists at Porton Down have established that the substance that poisoned the Skripals and D.S. Bailey was actually produced or manufactured in Russia?
On the first two points we are now told that Yulia Skripal's condition has significantly improved to the point where she is said to be recovering well and talking. However, although this provides something of an answer to these questions, it also raises a number of others. Is she finally being allowed consular access? Is she being allowed to speak to her fiancé, her grandmother, or her cousin by telephone? Most importantly, how does her recovery comport with the claim that she was poisoned with a "military-grade nerve agent" with a toxicity around 5-8 times that of VX nerve agent?

Comment: One of these questions has potentially been answered: she allegedly used a phone to call her cousin. Interesting, during the call she said she and her father were doing well and would be discharged soon, which leads to Slane's next question. See: Yulia Skripal call to cousin and statement to police released - "everyone's health fine, will be discharged soon"

On the other point, we do now have a definitive answer from none other than the Chief Executive of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Porton Down, Gary Aitkenhead: No, Porton Down was not able to identify the substance as being produced or manufactured in Russia.

It is important that reasonable questions continue to be raised, as they not only help clarify the actual issues, but the answers - or lack thereof - are also a good barometer as to how the official narrative stacks up. As a keen observer of the case - especially since it took place just a few hundred yards from my home in Salisbury - I have to say that the official narrative of the British Government has not stood up to even the most cursory scrutiny from the outset. In fact, there are three crucial issues that serve to raise suspicions about it, and to my mind these issues are the most important aspects of the case so far:
  1. The absurd speed at which the British Government reacted to the incident
  2. The British Government's ignoring of legal frameworks and protocols
  3. The large number of discrepancies between events and the official narrative
Let's just look at these in turn.

Comment: Slane presents a plausible third option. The fact is, there are several alternative scenarios, each with varying degrees of plausibility (accident, British assassination attempt, third country assassination attempt, organized crime assassination attempt, rogue Russian assassination attempt, official Russian assassination attempt). But the fact that the British government moved so quickly and incompetently to eliminate even the idea that there are alternative hypotheses points in their direction: either covering up their involvement with Skripal leading to an accident, or their active participation in his poisoning. For the latter case, see: We Can Actively Assume That Skripal Was Poisoned by The British Government
