Can't put the genie back in the bottle: WTO's Goods Trade Barometer 'flashes red'

world trade barometer

The volume of world merchandise trade is likely to fall steeply in the first half of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts the global economy, the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Goods Trade Barometer showed Wednesday.

"The index currently stands at 87.6, far below the baseline value of 100, suggesting a sharp contraction in world trade extending into the second quarter," said the WTO in its latest assessment.

"This is the lowest value on record since the indicator was launched in July 2016."

The current measure is in line with the WTO's trade forecast issued on April 8, which estimated that world merchandise trade could plunge between 13% and 32% in 2020, depending on the pandemic's duration, and the effectiveness of the responses of countries.

Coronavirus pandemic may throw 60 MILLION people into extreme poverty, World Bank warns
The world's progress in eliminating poverty is set to suffer a major setback due to the Covid-19 outbreak, forcing more people to survive on less than $1.90 per day, the World Bank has said in its recent report.

"The pandemic and shutdown of advanced economies could push as many as 60 million people into extreme poverty - erasing much of the recent progress made in poverty alleviation," World Bank Group President David Malpass said. According to him, the unprecedented crisis could wipe out up to three years of progress in the area.

Turkey: Failures in Syria and Libya fuel coup speculations against Erdogan

Rear Admiral Cihat Yaycı

Rear Admiral Cihat Yaycı
Turkish media has been full of speculation of a potential coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, including from state-run Anadolu Agency, and other major outlets like Sabah and Haberturk. Erdoğan already survived a 2016 coup attempt against him that he blames on his ex-ally, Fethullah Gülen, who leads the FETÖ Islamic movement. It is likely that Erdoğan will conduct another purge of the Turkish military.

Although the 2016 coup was orchestrated mostly by the Air Force, it appears that one of the first victims could have been Rear Admiral Cihat Yaycı. On May 15, Yaycı was demoted from the Chief of Staff's to the General Staff, prompting him to resign from the military completely on Monday. Although some speculated it could have been because of the coup rumors circulating, Yaycı proved to be one of the most loyal Chief of Staff's to Erdoğan and played a significant role in purging so-called FETÖ elements from the Turkish military.

It is likely that Yaycı was actually demoted because of Turkey's complete failure to project its power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Yaycı is known as the architect of Turkey's "Blue Homeland" theory that aims to annex Greece's Eastern Aegean islands and maritime space. To achieve the "Blue Homeland," Ankara in November 2019, with recommendation from Yaycı, sealed the "Marine Jurisdictions" maritime boundary delimitation deal with Libya's Muslim Brotherhood Government of National Accords (GNA) to split Greek maritime space between Turkey and Libya.

Comment: In the quest for more hegemonic control over the lands, resources and economy of the Middle East and Mediterranean, Erdo's government has slowly dug Turkey its own "grave". Will it try to continue its criminal ventures and look to ally itself further with the US and NATO - or will it reach out to its erstwhile ally Russia once again for support having no where else to go? - Or, will it continue to try to do both in the scheming manner it has for the last few years?

How the Obama administration weaponized surveillance laws to target Trump

Obamagate
Federal surveillance laws put in place after Nixon were supposed to protect U.S. citizens. The Obama administration used them to spy on political opponents.

The drip-drip-drip of newly declassified documents related to the Trump-Russia investigation, together with recent reports that a classified leak against former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn might not have come from an unmasking request, leaves little doubt that the Obama administration weaponized federal surveillance laws to target Trump associates and undermine the incoming administration.

The story thus far is complex, but it reveals a disturbing abuse of power by the Obama administration that suggests congressional reform of federal surveillance laws is needed to ensure this never happens again.

Blaming Russia, China, Iran - to profit from Covid-19 vaccine

vaccine covid-19
On 5 May, the British security services released to their pet media the claim that Russia, China and Iran were attempting to hack into British research institutes conducting coronavirus research. The BBC reported it. Britain's shameful copy and paste media all, without exception, just copy and pasted the government press release.

Covid-19 vaccine propaganda
The Guardian gave the quote:
"Any attack against efforts to combat the coronavirus crisis is utterly reprehensible. We have seen an increased proportion of cyber-attacks related to coronavirus and our experts work around the clock to help organisations targeted".
If Britain had one single mainstream media journalist willing to think, rather than just regurgitate government propaganda, they might have realised that there is a massive story here if you look at it the other way round. The quote from the Guardian deliberately attempted to give the impression that Russia, China and Iran were trying to disable, destroy or hamper coronavirus research: "Any attack against efforts to combat the coronavirus". But if you read carefully through those articles, you find that the allegation is merely that they are attempting to hack in to gain access to the research. Because the UK and the US are attempting to hide their vaccine and treatment research results from the rest of the world to make money out of them.

United Nations gets woke: Claims it's politically incorrect to say "husband" or "wife"

Urges people to stop saying "boyfriend" & "girlfriend" in order to "create a more equal world."

The United Nations has put out a tweet asserting that people shouldn't use politically incorrect terms like "boyfriend," "girlfriend," "husband" and "wife" in order to "help create a more equal world."

"What you say matters. Help create a more equal world by using gender-neutral language if you're unsure about someone's gender or are referring to a group," states the tweet.

It then lists a number of terms alongside their politically correct alternative.

Comment: It's amazing that while dealing with the 'crisis of the century' the United Nations would find time out for such trivialities. Perhaps they realize the importance of controlling people's language in terms of controlling the populace. We've all read 1984, UN. We see what you're doing.

The "Screen New Deal": Andrew Cuomo calls in the billionaires to build a high-tech dystopia

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo looks on as Google executive chair Eric Schmidt, left, talks during the Smart Schools Commission report at Mineola Middle School on Oct. 27, 2014 in Mineola, N.Y.
For a few fleeting moments during New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's daily coronavirus briefing on Wednesday, the somber grimace that has filled our screens for weeks was briefly replaced by something resembling a smile.

"We are ready, we're all-in," the governor gushed. "We are New Yorkers, so we're aggressive about it, we're ambitious about it. ... We realize that change is not only imminent, but it can actually be a friend if done the right way."

The inspiration for these uncharacteristically good vibes was a video visit from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who joined the governor's briefing to announce that he will be heading up a blue-ribbon commission to reimagine New York state's post-Covid reality, with an emphasis on permanently integrating technology into every aspect of civic life.

"The first priorities of what we're trying to do," Schmidt said, "are focused on telehealth, remote learning, and broadband. ... We need to look for solutions that can be presented now, and accelerated, and use technology to make things better." Lest there be any doubt that the former Google chair's goals were purely benevolent, his video background featured a framed pair of golden angel wings.

Newly declassified email shows FBI's Comey worried about Flynn's frequent talks with Russia's ambassador

Michael Flynn
Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell fully declassified Tuesday a January 2017 email Susan Rice, then President Barack Obama's national security adviser, sent to herself about a brief Jan. 5 meeting about incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. This is the second document related to Flynn that Grenell has declassified in the past week, as Attorney General William Barr seeks to drop the criminal case again Flynn for his lies to FBI agents about his undisclosed number of conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Kislyak's calls were monitored.

Those conversations were a focus of the Jan. 5 meeting memorialized by Rice.

Iranian media refute Israeli claim that Tehran is scaling down its Syrian presence

The Iranian Army ended large-scale military drills Wednesday with a massive naval parade hosted by the country's President Hassan Rouhani
Previously, outgoing Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennet commented that Iran "has begun the withdrawal process from Syria," his uncorroborated-by-evidence statement coming in the wake of earlier reports of Israeli officials suggesting there was a scaling down of Tehran's presence in the country.

An Iranian military source has been cited by Fars News Agency as refuting earlier statements made by outgoing Israeli Defense Minister, Naftali Bennett, that Tehran was reducing its presence in Syria.

"There has been no change in the quantity and quality of Iran's advisory presence in Syria... We will stay in Syria as long as the Syrian government needs the help of the Iranian advisers," the well-informed military source was quoted as saying.

Comment: And so Iran will stay, as will Russia, as long as Assad requests. Pompeo may bluster all he wants, but these are men of honor who will not abandon each other. Each understands helping each other helps themselves.

YouTube deletes channels that focus on Crimea & eastern Ukraine, cites 'terms of use' violation

Youtube ban
Google has unexpectedly wiped the channels of three Russian-speaking news outlets from its video service YouTube, explaining the decision to one of them by "terms of use violation."

Google's erasure of alternative media seems to have gone one step further on Wednesday with channels of three media outlets simply disappearing from YouTube. The channels had years of presence on the service and thousands of subscribers. The more popular of their videos counted views in the millions. Now the content is gone from YouTube, and only a warning can be seen that the channels have been terminated for violating the terms of service.

The victims of the purge are channels belonging to News-Front, Anna-News as well as Krym24 (Crimea 24), which all say they were kicked out of YouTube without warning and for no apparent reason.

Comment: It long since past the time that online platforms should lose their protections as "neutral hosting sites". Their editorial actions have placed them under free speech laws.

Venezuela files legal claim in bid to force Bank of England to hand over $1 billion of gold for pandemic response

Venezuela has launched legal proceedings to try to force the Bank of England to hand over $1 billion worth of gold, claiming it needs the money to fund an appropriate response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The gold is being retained at the Bank of England as a result of U.K. and U.S. sanctions on the crisis-stricken South American country.

President Nicolas Maduro's administration has claimed it wants the Bank of England to sell part of the reserves in order to help fund the country's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The legal document, which was filed in a commercial court and dated May 14, calls for the Bank of England to transfer the funds to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Comment: It's rather insane that Venezuela can't have access to their own money, however that is the state of the world in which we live. Using the coronavirus 'pandemic' as a means of accessing such funds is a smart move, and plays on the 'panic' generated by the world's power structures.
