Puppet Masters
Putin met Regina Parpieva shortly after wrapping up his big annual Q&A session with a large crowd of reporters. The interview was fulfilling a wish that the teenager had - granted with a little help from RT.
Regina has a rare autoimmune condition called neuromyelitis optica, or Devic's disease, which causes damage to spinal cord and optic nerves. This did not prevent her from becoming a brilliant swimmer - vying for a spot in the Russian Paralympic team - as well as a budding musician and sculptor.
Malaysian prosecutors this week filed charges against Goldman Sachs in connection with its role as underwriter and arranger of three bond sales that raised $6.5 billion for 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the first criminal action against the U.S. bank over the scandal.
Goldman Sachs has consistently denied wrongdoing and said certain members of the former Malaysian government and 1MDB lied to the bank about the proceeds of the bond sales.
After Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual Q&A session, attended by Russian and foreign media, in Moscow on Thursday, RT spoke to former US congressman Ron Paul to discuss the current state of US-Russia relations.
Comment: Just one gem from the Q&A: Putin: The 'US is right to leave Syria, but no signs of pullout - remember Afghanistan'
RT: As for US-Russia relations, Vladimir Putin and other leaders have said global stability is at risk if Washington withdraws from the INF Treaty. Would you agree there's a risk here?
Ron Paul: It should be a worry, but sometimes all countries seem to overstate their positions to make certain points. But it isn't a good idea for the US to get out of that agreement. It makes the world more dangerous.
The plans are due shortly after the new year, according to the officials. They cautioned that no decision has been made, but President Donald Trump wants to see options.
The White House has asked the Pentagon to look into multiple options, including a complete withdrawal, the officials said. An Afghan official told NBC News that Trump is considering a substantial drawdown of U.S. troops in the country.
Comment: This comes after Trump's restatement of his intent to withdraw US troops from Syria, and Mattis' resignation.
The 'liberal left' in the US is currently savaging Trump for 'letting go' of 'our' Syria and Afghanistan!
In the letter, Mattis suggested Trump was not treating allies with respect and had not been "clear-eyed" about U.S. enemies and competitors.
"My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues," he wrote.
Mattis told the president in the letter that he should have a defense chief who shares his views.
Comment: Interesting development. It's probably connected with Trump's recent restatement of his desire to get US troops out of Syria.
What a difficult task it is to get US elites to wake up to the fact that reality has changed and we're no longer in 'the post-WW2 era of Pax Americana'.
The US liberal establishment is freaking out:

Russia proves it has chosen the right track for developing its export economy
The figure is compared to the previous record that was fixed in 2013, when the country's non-energy exports reached $143.5 billion.
According to the official, the boost has been seen in various sectors. In October alone, sales of food amounted to $2.47 billion, which is $330 million higher than the previous record set in November 2017.
Exports of forest-industry produce are expected to reach an all-time high with an estimated volume of sales to hit $11.7 billion, compared to $9.5 billion last year. At the same time, sales of wheat are projected to smash the previous year's record, growing to more than 42 million tons.
Comment: Sweet revenge? Sanctions have inspired Russia to new heights in negotiating global trade agreements:
- What sanctions? Russia's agricultural exports booming, expected to hit $25 billion this year
- Renewable energy plan: Russia starts exports of locally-produced solar panels to Europe
- Russia-Austria trade grows almost 60%, approaches pre-sanctions record highs
- Breadbasket of the world: Russia's grain exports rose more than 54% this year
- Russia to replace US soybean exports to China amid escalating trade war
- Gazprom stops natural gas auction as it's 'sold out' for 2018
In segment on her critically-acclaimed show, "Watch Me Scream 'Russia' Until I Dislocate My Jaw", Maddow made an adroit observation of seismic proportions: Reports that Donald Trump is mulling a partial withdrawal from Afghanistan emerged only hours after Vladimir Putin said that the US keeps promising to leave the country but never does! In layman's terms: Putin ordered Trump to pull troops out of Afghanistan, during a live broadcast? It seems Maddow believes that she decrypted their top-secret communications channel.
Comment: A clip like that would end up in the internet's Meme Hall of Fame. Stay tuned!

White Helmets are shown in Syria’s Idlib province in this September 2015 file photo
Praised in the West as humanitarian rescue volunteers, in reality the 'White Helmets' work with Islamist militants in Syria, harvest organs from the victims they pretend to be "rescuing," stage false chemical weapons and other attacks for cameras, and loot the bodies and homes of Syrians killed and injured in the war, according to Maxim Grigoriev, director of the Russia-based Foundation for the Study of Democracy.
According to a source in the capital city, a delegation from the Syrian Democratic Forces traveled to Damascus to meet with the Syrian government about the Turkish military's upcoming operation east of the Euphrates.
The SDF delegation reportedly arrived at the Mezzeh Airport via helicopter on Thursday.
The source said that the two sides agreed that the Turkish invasion of northern Syria is a direct threat to Syria's sovereignty, but no deals have been made.
He would add that they are still in talks about jointly controlling the crossings along the Turkish border.

Comment: The Kurds have finally realized their dream of a state, carved out of three vastly more powerful nations, was never going to be a reality. Syria has consistently offered them a place in the country, but they had always demanded more than Damascus was willing to give. Now they have little choice.

Aleksej Gubarev in February 2017 sued BuzzFeed for defamation because he was named in the now-infamous Trump dossier, which the outlet published along with its story.
On Tuesday, a Florida federal judge ruled that Gubarev is not a public figure, which looked like bad news for BuzzFeed. The standard required for defamation of a private person is considerably lower than that of a public figure, which requires a showing of actual malice.
The section of the dossier that references Gubarev claims his company XBT and its affiliates were using botnets and porn to transmit viruses and steal data to the detriment of the Democratic party. It claims Gubarev was a significant player in the operation. The BuzzFeed article contained a disclaimer that the dossier contained unverified allegations and "some clear errors," and Gubarev claims the statements concerning him are false and the outlet published it with reckless disregard for the truth, which is the bar for actual malice.

Comment: Ron Paul is partly right, because it is true that the US' marauding around the Middle East will radicalize people, and he's also right that the US is there to 'take care' of the 'radicals', but not in the way he intended the comment; because if it weren't for the US' relentless supplies of weaponry, cash and intel the terrorists would likely be incredibly ineffective.
