The defeat of the budget is a blow to Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez
Sánchez's Socialists relied on the support of Basque and Catalan parties to seize power from the conservative People's Party last year, but Catalan nationalist parties and one of the Basque parties voted with the opposition against the prime minister's spending plans and the budget.
Sánchez's plans failed by 191 votes against, with 158 in favor and one abstention. The prime minister is now expected to call a snap election in April or May. The next general election was due to be held next year. According to local media, Sánchez will announce Friday if he will call an election.
