US vetoes UN resolution on withdrawing Trump's Jerusalem decision - All other members voted in favor of the document

The United Nations Security Council meets on the situation in the Middle East, including Palestine, at U.N. Headquarters in New York City, New York, U.S., December 18, 2017 Brendan McDermid / Reuters
The US has vetoed the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Jerusalem, which had demanded the American decision recognizing the city as the Israeli capital be withdrawn. All other UNSC members voted in favor of the document.

The US exercised its veto right to "defend its sovereignty" as well as its role in the Middle East, Washington's envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said. She also repeatedly stated that US President Donald Trump's decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital is "fully consistent" and "in line with the previous UN resolutions."

Comment: The UN Security Council is expected to vote Monday on a resolution confirming the international status of Jerusalem and outlawing any changes to it - which implies the recent US move to recognize it as the capital of Israel.
The text of the document, drafted by Egypt, which was seen by Reuters, says that "any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council."

It does not specifically mention the US or its recent decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but it implies a call on Washington to withdraw it. The text also mentions "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem."

Assad vows to root out all terrorism in Syria: Including those backed by the West

Syrian President Bashar Assad
The war in Syria won't be over until every last terrorist is defeated, including those backed by the West, Syrian President Bashar Assad has said, accusing some Western countries of having hands "covered in Syrian blood." Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin in Damascus, Assad told journalists that focusing on Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) alone distracts from the other extremists in Syria supported by the West such as Al-Nusra Front, also known as Jabhat al-Nusra, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda.

"Terrorism is not limited to Daesh [derogatory name for IS]. Daesh is just a part of terrorism. And while there are terrorist organizations like Daesh, Al-Nusra and organizations with other names, this means that we are still at war. So the war on terrorism in Syria will be completed when the last terrorist in Syria is eliminated without reference to their name. Then you can really talk about a victory," the Syrian leader explained.

Comment: Two years ago Assad said: "It's Europe that exports terrorists, not the other way round - terrorists come to Syria from Europe and when they return home they carry out terrorist attacks."

Vladimir Putin takes spotlight as Eurasia connector in end-of-year news conference

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during his annual end-of-year news conference in Moscow on December 14, 2017.
At his trademark annual year-end press conference in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again let drop selected foreign-policy nuggets essential to understanding what lies ahead on the turbulent Eurasian geopolitical chessboard.

By now it's well known that Putin will run again in the presidential elections scheduled for March 18 ("it will be self-nomination" and "I hope for the overall support from the public"). The Man in Charge might as well continue to be in charge. So it's always enlightening to bring down the (spin) noise: sit back, relax, and just listen.

Putin goes to Cairo as Trump ties himself in knots with Jerusalem announcement

Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi, shake hands during their meeting in Cairo, Egypt, Monday, Dec. 11, 2017.
The United States' self-goal on Jerusalem opens for Russia a window of opportunity to strengthen its standing as the most creative and positive player in the Middle East politics. Within four days of President Trump's announcement on Jerusalem, President Vladimir Putin is undertaking unscheduled 'working visits' to Egypt and Turkey. On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry issued a lengthy statement criticizing the US decision on Jerusalem and affirming that
We believe a fair and lasting solution to the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be based on international law, including UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions that provide for settling all aspects of the final status of the Palestinian territories, including the highly delicate issue of Jerusalem, through direct Palestinian-Israeli talks. The United States' new position on Jerusalem can further complicate Palestinian-Israeli relations and the situation in the region... Russia sees East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state and West Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel.
Russia has positioned itself appropriately on the Arab Street. But Jerusalem issue is not what is taking Putin to Cairo. The Kremlin readout flagged the need of "providing stability and security in the Middle East and North Africa." Which means Libya, Sinai and Syria and to an extent Yemen - in that order, perhaps.

Comment: It's far better that Russia be guiding the Libyan situation. U.S. efforts at "diplomacy" would make a botch of it.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has voiced his support for same-sex unions, telling an LGBT gathering that he even toyed with the idea of becoming bisexual so he could "have fun both ways."

Duterte made the remarks at an LGBT gathering at Azuela Cove in Davao City on Sunday.

"I said I am for (same) sex marriage if that is the trend of the modern times," he said. "If that will add to your happiness, I am for it."

Duterte said he was against gender discrimination, and that he had two gay brothers-in-law. The president also voiced his support for having gay members in his cabinet, adding that he was open to allowing same-sex marriage, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports.

Comment:
In spite of his sustained popularity, the Catholic Church has been a prominent critic and Duterte has not hidden his anger. He has furthermore, blown the whistle on corruption within the religious body.

In January of this year Duterte said about the Catholic Church,
"I challenge you now. I challenge the Catholic Church. You are full of shit. You all smell bad, corruption and all".
The President also stated,
"You criticise the police, you criticise me. For what? You have the money. You are all crazy ... when we were making confessions to you, we were being molested. They are touching us. What is your moral ascendancy, religion? What is the meaning of it?"
In the above speech and in a further speech in June of this year, Duterte also accused religious officials of graft, accepting bribes and individually reprehensible behaviour among leading clerics.

Flip-flop: Doug Jones says US should 'move on' from Trump's alleged sexual misconduct

Democrat Doug Jones, who won the special US Senate election against Republican candidate Roy Moore.
Alabama Senator-elect Doug Jones believes allegations of sexual misconduct made against US President Donald Trump should not lead to his resignation.

The newly-elected Democratic senator, who previously hit out at Senate election rival Roy Moore over historic sexual assault allegations made against him by multiple women, said people should "get on with the real issues."

Sexual assault allegations have been levelled at US President Donald Trump by a number of women, including a former Miss Finland winner. The allegations, which Trump has branded "wild and false,"have led to calls for the 45th US president to step down.

However, in a statement that appeared to be at odds with his reaction to Senate rival Roy Moore, Jones backed the president to continue in his role. It came after Jones was asked on CNN's State of the Union if he agreed with Democratic Senator Cory Booker's call for Trump to go.

"Pharonic" President Macron chastised for celebrating his birthday in royal style

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday celebrated his birthday at the iconic chateau of King Francois I, a choice denounced by critics as an example of how he is "cut off from the people".

Macron, who turns 40 on Thursday, is spending the weekend with his wife Brigitte and extended family at the chateau of Chambord in France's Loire Valley, local French newspaper La Nouvelle Republique reported.

With its fairy tale facade, elaborately turreted roofline and vast grounds, Chambord is probably the valley's best-known Renaissance chateau, located about 200 kilometres (125 miles) southwest of Paris.

Macron and his family will stay at one of the cottages on the vast estate, French media said, with a birthday gala to be held Saturday evening in one of the castle's 440 rooms.

Comment: Well, Macron gave fair warning when he said he would proceed with a "Jupiterian" presidency.

"Their disturbing allegations came to light before the post-Weinstein era of accountability for sexual misconduct and the rise of the #MeToo movement."

A far-left activist group funded by George Soros is readying the women who accused President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct to demand a congressional investigation. The women had made their accusations just before the November 2016 election.

The women will speak on Monday at 10:30 a.m. ET to call for "accountability and an investigation by Congress of sexual misconduct." They had accused Trump of "groping, fondling, forcibly kissing, humiliating and harassing women."

The press conference was announced in a statement obtained by CBS News:
