The Israeli military and the Palestinian political and militant movement Hamas have engaged in a series of back and forth skirmishes for well over a year now as a result of ongoing protests by Palestinians along the Gaza Strip's border with Israel.

Israel would be willing to grant Gaza economic concessions and ease its blockade of the territory if a long-term ceasefire with Hamas could be reached, but were also "serious" about launching a "major military strike" if militants continue rocket attacks into Israel, Lebanon's al-Akhbar newspaper has reported, citing a Hamas source said to be familiar with negotiations between the group and officials from Egyptian intelligence.

Hamas negotiators reportedly responded that the group was "not afraid" of Israeli threats, but promised to pass the details of the Egyptian proposal on to their leadership.

No F-35? No problem! Turkey in talks with Russia on buying Su-57 fighters

Ankara is holding talks on purchasing Su-57 jets from Moscow, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. But Turkey's foreign minister stressed his country is not giving up hopes on the US unfreezing the F-35 deal.

"Our ministries continue to have meetings with their counterparts [on this issue]," Erdogan told reporters on Friday, after being asked whether Turkey will purchase Su-57s.

The president's words came a few days after he personally inspected the fifth-generation plane during an air show outside Moscow, where its export model was unveiled for the first time.

Turkey began eyeing Russian warplanes after its NATO ally, the US, refused to sell it F-35 jet fighters. Washington was trying to pressure Ankara into scrapping a contract to buy the Russian S-400 air defense missile system. Turkish officials refused to budge, insisting the country is free to get weapons from whoever it chooses.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu noted that Turkey prefers sticking to its original plan of getting the jets from the US, as well as remaining in the F-35 program. However, the country will explore other options, if that does not happen, he said.

Russian UN envoy: West treating Syrian al-Qaeda terrorists as 'innocent babies'

The Russian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyanskiy, said in a Thursday statement at the UN Security Council meeting that "every time the Syrian forces gain advantage on the ground and start to push terrorists", Western countries "calls to stop armed action".

"Our Western colleagues amplify their moans and calls to stop armed action, as if forgetting about our shared decisions to fight terrorism in an uncompromising manner. Then, as you could see today, terrorists become innocent babies [...] Consensus in favor of a new peaceful Syria owned by the Syrian people rather than Western protégés and mercenaries is already in place. Terrorists and those who support them are not the ones to hold the initiative", Polyanskiy stressed.

The UK Political Coordinator to the United Nations, Stephen Hickey, claimed earlier on Thursday during the UNSC meeting that "there remain more babies than terrorists in Idlib".

Comment: Whether or not this is precisely true, it has been just as true in every theater of the war on terror in which the UK has participated. Neither Hickey nor his political overlords care about the babies. They only care about keeping their Western protégés and mercenaries in control. They just know that people care about babies, so they use them for PR purposes, whether or not they're actually in danger.

Meanwhile, despite the crocodile tears from snakes like Hickey, the Syrians are succeeding in liberating more towns from al-Qaeda (10+ villages east of Khan Sheikhoun).

Dollar disposition: Global economic uncertainties push central banks to boost gold holdings

Increasing uncertainties in the global economy have pushed central banks to further diversify their asset portfolios to generate higher returns.

Many such banks have boosted their holdings of gold in an effort to diversify their reserves away from the US dollar amid trade tensions.

In the first half of this year, the banks bought 374 metric tons of gold worth $15.7 billion, a record high, according to data released by the World Gold Council earlier this month.

Lukman Otunuga, senior research analyst at FXTM, a global foreign exchange trading platform, said that as concerns over trade disputes and global growth boost investors' appetite for safe-haven assets, gold remains one of the prime secure destinations.

"As long as the appetite for risk is dented by global growth fears, trade tensions and uncertainties over Brexit, among many other geopolitical risk factors, gold will remain in the driving seat," Otunuga said.

Comment: As Pepe Escobar notes, we are witnessing the slow but sure collapse of the dollar's stranglehold over world economies. See also:

The CIA's 'dark prince' doesn't want war with Iran

Iran
Two comments last week highlight the dangerous security impasse in which Iran and the U.S. find themselves. The first was from Iran's spiritual leader, the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, that maritime security will remain at risk if its oil exports continue to be compromised. The second was from U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, that sanctions may be applied on any country that helps the Iranian tanker Adrian Darya 1 as it makes its way back to Iran through the Mediterranean, having been released by the U.K. overseas territory of Gibraltar.

"Iran's view is now that the U.S. will not launch the full-scale military attack that was previously expected, that the U.S. is increasingly isolated in its actions against Iran among its allies in Europe and even in the U.K.," a senior source who works closely with Iran's Petroleum Ministry told OilPrice.com last week. "At the same time, Iran believes it can lever the U.S. back into a newly renegotiated nuclear deal involving the removal of all sanctions," he added.

"We await much from Vladivostok," Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told Kommersant business daily during a visit to Moscow on Wednesday. The official held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, to discuss how the EEF may help boost ties between the two countries.

The summit is to take place between September 4 and 6, with President Vladimir Putin sheduled to meet the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi there.

And there are quite a number of topics that could hit the agenda.

'Ultimate high ground': Pentagon launches US Space Command, crosses fingers for Space Force

The Pentagon has formally established the US Space Command, tasked with deterring US rivals from "challenging American space assets or operations" - and, it hopes, serving as a stepping stone to an independent Space Force.

"The dangers to our country constantly evolve, and so must we," President Donald Trump said at a ceremony marking the establishment of the military's 11th combatant command on Thursday. "Now those that wish to harm the United States to seek to challenge us in the ultimate high ground of space - it's gonna be a whole different ball game."

The ultimate goal of Space Command - and the Space Force Trump and the Pentagon hope it will become - is to have the capacity to "degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy, and manipulate adversary capabilities to protect US interests, assets, and way of life," according to internal documents. After years of watching its rivals moving effortlessly through space - NASA relies on Russian technology to ferry its astronauts to the International Space Station, while China has beaten the US to the dark side of the moon - the US wants revenge. Or if not, at least to load up earth orbit with as many weapons as possible.

The new command is led by Air Force General Jay Raymond, who took the occasion to put Russia, China, and "other powers" that might "challenge" American assets or operations on notice.

Leak leaves no doubt Netanyahu's illicit deals with media tycoon

Any doubts about illicit deals between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and fallen telecom tycoon Shaul Elovitch in the police's Case 4000 should be put to rest after the details of Shlomo Filber's statements to police investigators were leaked this week.

This is the case where the police believe Netanyahu traded friendly coverage by Bezeq's Walla news site in exchange for help with regulations for the company, Israel's dominant telecom provider. Filber, who had been appointed director general of the Communications Ministry in 2015 shortly after Netanyahu took over the portfolio, was the point man for the alleged trade-offs.

He has since turned state's evidence and his testimony points to the role the prime minister played in the ministry's policies on Bezeq.

In a key incident, Filber described a meeting with Netanyahu that began in a businesslike way before the prime minister relaxed, unbuttoned his jacket and took out a cigar. On the agenda were two items - one was a telecom reform that would have helped smaller companies compete more effectively against Bezeq

Poking the Dragon: US warplane spotted taking 'unusual path' over Taiwan Strait

A US Air Force MC-130J Commando tanker aircraft was spotted taking an unusual flight path through the Taiwan Strait - possibly as provocation toward China.

A Thursday report issued by Taiwan's defense ministry announced that a US transport aircraft traveled along the "median line" dividing the Taiwan Strait around 11 a.m. local time after departing from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan.

Though Taipei claims "nothing unusual" occurred during the flight, it's unlikely that China will agree. While Beijing claims sovereignty over the strait, the US military has continued to send forces through it as part of freedom of navigation operations, and the US Department of Defense recently approved an $88 billion sale of 66 F-16C/D fighter jets to Taiwan.
