This is really terrible analysis. Yes, "Putin announced constitutional changes last week", but they have absolutely nothing to do with some sinister plan to stay in power, and anyone who read the speech would know that. Unfortunately, most of the other 100-or-so "cookie cutter" articles on the topic, draw the same absurd conclusion as the Times, that is, that the changes Putin announced in his speech merely conceal his real intention which is to extend his time in office for as long as possible. Once again, there's nothing in the speech itself to support these claims, it's just another attempt to smear Putin."Nobody knows what's going on inside the Kremlin right now. And perhaps that's precisely the point. President Vladimir V. Putin announced constitutional changes last week that could create new avenues for him to rule Russia for the rest of his life....(wrong)
The fine print of the legislation showed that the prime minister's powers would not be expanded as much as first advertised, while members of the State Council would still appear to serve at the pleasure of the president. So maybe Mr. Putin's plan is to stay president, after all?....(wrong again)
A journalist, Yury Saprykin, offered a similar sentiment on Facebook, but in verse:
We'll be debating over how he won't leave,
We'll be guessing, will he leave or won't he.
And then — lo! — he won't be leaving.
That is, before the elections he won't leave,
And after that, he definitely won't leave." (wrong, a third time)

Puppet Masters
Trump announced the proposal alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during remarks in the East Room of the White House.
WHAT'S IN TRUMP'S MIDDLE EAST PEACE PLAN?
"My vision presents a win-win situation for both sides," Trump said. "Today Israel has taken a giant step toward peace."
He later tweeted a map of the proposed State of Palestine.
The British government on Tuesday said that companies such as Chinese tech firm Huawei would be allowed to participate in developing the country's high-speed wireless 5G network, but that they would be excluded from "core" parts of the system.
Under the provisions, the government said "high-risk vendors" would be excluded from all safety-related and critical networks, as well as from sensitive locations such as nuclear sites and military bases.
Comment: Huawei has gone out of its way to allay other countries' security concerns. This is US grandstanding as its tech industry falls further and further behind.
It would appear that the West has no home grown alternatives, that the offer from Huawei is evidently not that much of threat and it's a deal that's too good to miss out on. Disobeying the US just makes good business sense:
- '5G now America-free': China's Huawei assembles latest phones without US parts
- How's that blockade working Trump? Not a single European country has banned Huawei
- Huawei looks to Russian technology to replace Google's Android, testing under way
But the story doesn't end there. Iran and its allies have no intention of allowing a tranquil presence for the US forces in the Middle East until their final withdrawal date. Notwithstanding the distance of all joint Iraqi-US bases from residential areas, there is no doubt the US military presence has become a target.
The US administration and mainstream media attribute the instability of Iraq to the overwhelming Iranian control of the country. This is inaccurate: every single Prime Minister was appointed or approved by the US administration.
The US has never succeeded in bringing stability to Iraq since it began to occupy the country in 2003. US forces suffered continuous attacks after the first year of landing in Iraq by those who rejected the occupation. The US failed to build a robust infrastructure and certainly did not win the hearts and minds of the population even though it had the upper hand in selecting the leaders of Iraq.
While his observation may have pleased his Polish hosts at the event near Auschwitz, Vladimir Putin's press representative described Zelensky's comments as "incorrect" and "offensive."
In a sharp rebuke, Dmitry Peskov said Zelensky's position "is hardly compatible" with the opinion of "millions of Ukrainians," adding that surviving Ukrainian veterans who fought against Nazi Germany would not share in apportioning blame to the USSR.
"We strongly disagree with this statement," Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.
Comment: Russia bore the brunt of the Nazi onslaught, and tried to protect countries within their sphere. Ukraine, and especially Poland should be ashamed to be pretending otherwise to salve their own guilty consciences.

An indictment was filed at the Jerusalem District Court by Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit this morning against the prime minister on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.
The court will now set a date for the beginning of the trial.
Comment: RT reports:
In an 11th-hour decision, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has withdrawn his request to parliament to grant him immunity from prosecution. The move apparently undermines his rival Benny Gantz's US visit. From Al Jazeera:
The statement was published as Netanyahu visited the United States, where President Donald Trump is scheduled to unveil his long-expected 'Deal of the Century', an arrangement that will reportedly bring numerous benefits to Israel and support its policies on Palestine.
The high-profile event will be a boost to Netanyahu, who is facing an unprecedented third snap general election in less than a year, standing against former general Benny Gantz. Washington gave a surprise public relations boost to Gantz - who may become the next Israeli prime minister, should his Blue and White party break the deadlock with Netanyahu's Likud in March - by offering him a separate meeting with Trump on Monday.
Gantz responded to Netanyahu's move, saying the PM is now going to trial.
"Israeli citizens have a clear choice: a prime minister who will work for them or a self-employed prime minister. No-one can run a state and simultaneously run three serious criminal cases for bribery, fraud and breach of trust," he said.
"Netanyahu hates to be the loser. He wanted the immunity and he wasn't able to get it. He stood no chance. He doesn't have a majority in the Knesset to get the immunity," Eldar said.Either choice is appalling. Gantz is an equally rabid zionist,, whose selection would make no difference to the suffering of the Palestinians. He just doesn't have the stench of corruption about him that Bibi does, being just a garden-variety Israeli war criminal.
The Knesset was still expected to assemble despite Netanyahu's withdrawal of his request to form the committee, which will also address former welfare minister Haim Katz's request for immunity from prosecution in his own corruption cases.
Ayman Odeh, leader of the Joint List of Arab parties in the Israeli parliament, said "the path to trial is paved and no diplomatic public relations stunt in the world" would prevent him from being brought to justice.
Netanyahu could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of bribery and a maximum three-year term for fraud and breach of trust.

US President Donald Trump • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu • White House, January 27, 2020
While the details of the long-awaited "Deal of the Century" have largely been left up to speculation, it is largely understood that the deal will be heavily pro-Israel.
While Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu described the US proposal as a once in a lifetime "opportunity" that Israel "cannot miss," the impending release of the plan has sparked impassioned reactions by Palestinians.
Reports surfaced on Monday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had refused a phone call with Trump, ahead of Trump's meetings with Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz on Tuesday. The move was hailed by Palestinians across social media, who praised Abbas for sticking to his ongoing boycott of the Trump administration.
Speaking at a private dinner, Soros called Trump a "con man" and a "narcissist" and accused the President of needing the world to "revolve around him."
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
"When his fantasy of becoming president became a reality, his ego swelled," Soros said, adding: "This has turned his narcissism into a malignant disease."
Watch the video here (if you can get through more than two minutes because the 90 year old Soros can barely speak anymore):
With the parliamentary elections on the horizon, President Rouhani spoke to provincial governors about the electoral process. Rouhani criticized the way the Islamic Republic deals with elections in general, and the actions of Iran's Guardian Council of the Constitution specifically.
The council, which decides who can run for office, has so far barred almost 10,000 candidates, including 92 current members of parliament, who will not be able to run for re-election. Most of these are reformers and moderate conservatives.
This unprecedented number of disqualifications could push Iran away from being a democracy, Rouhani warned. "The greatest danger for democracy and national sovereignty is the day when elections become a formality. May God never bring this day."
With so many candidates disqualified, Rouhani's alliance of moderate conservatives and reformers is going to have a harder time holding onto their majority.
Comment: As the gatekeeper on candidate qualifications, the Guardian Council of the Constitution has soft power to influence the future of Iran by qualifying/disqualifying candidates according to their political leanings.
The international chemical weapons watchdog is under increasing pressure to come clean about how it prepared its report into the April 2018 incident in the Damascus suburb. Several scientists from the watchdog blew the whistle, alleging that the findings by inspectors who went on a fact-finding mission to Syria had been distorted or ignored by the OPCW's management, which was more concerned with putting the blame on the Syrian government than with uncovering the truth.
John Taylor Holmes, a retired major general who served as a director of special forces, was on a panel of experts which heard testimony from one of the whistleblowers, identified as 'Alex.' The general said the evidence provided by the scientist and the rest of the team "was very convincing".
