A population with nothing to lose

Palestine Flag
© Caitlin’s Newsletter
The coming days are going to be full of western news media slyly reversing the aggressor-defender relationship and reporting as though all the violence began with the Hamas offensive, spontaneously out of nowhere.

The problem with oppressing a population with maximum force is that at some point they start figuring they've got nothing to lose by fighting back.

Do I think this latest uprising will end in more positive results than negative for Palestinians? No. Does that mean I'll condemn the Palestinian resistance for fighting back? Also no.

This is because doing so would be nonsensical, for a couple of different reasons. Firstly, because nobody can tell me what the Palestinians should do instead that is both realistic and reasonable. It would be easy for me to sit here in my armchair and say the Palestinians should either maintain the status quo or lie down, relinquish their homes and homeland and accept whatever table scraps they're able to get, but we can see from the Palestinian perspective that that's not reasonable. It would be easy for me to sit in my armchair and argue that Palestinians should just focus on securing a one-state or two-state solution, but we can see from the Israeli political landscape that that's not realistic.

So what else can they do? What reasonable and realistic options do they have? No one can provide me a satisfactory answer.

Flashback Best of the Web: How Bulgarian weapons were exported to Ukraine between 2019 & 2021

bulgaria weapons ukraine
51,000 pcs. of RLV-HEF rounds, manufactured by the Bulgarian arms factory Arsenal, were exported to Ukraine by the Polish company Arm Techsp. Zo.O., in 2021
Documents reveal that tons of Bulgarian weapons were exported to Ukraine via Poland and the Czech Republic in 2021 and 2020. Bulgaria officially denies that Bulgarian weapons were exported to Ukraine, although the use of Bulgarian weapons was well documented on the front line in Ukraine.

Weapons originating from the Balkans are often seen in war zones including in the hands of terrorists in Syria and Yemen. Although local governments have always denied such exports documents prove otherwise.

Weapons from the Balkans have been used for years for illicit arms supplies to war zones around the world. Documents revealed that 350 diplomatic flights carried weapons to terrorists in Syria. Leaked documents also exposed a secret US Special Operations Command unit code named Task Force Smoking Gun. It had been deployed in Croatia since 2017 and tasked with diverting tons of arms and ammunition from Europe to Syria.

Comment: Calls to supply the neo-Nazi aligned military in Ukraine is no longer kept under wraps, with one (rather dodgy looking) UK MP attempting to shame other countries for not joining in with their warmongering:

EU leaders back bigger union but avoid date, warn against short cuts

European Union leaders declared support on Friday for adding new members to the bloc but set no target date and warned candidates such as Ukraine that there would be no short cuts.

At a summit in the Spanish city of Granada, leaders of the 27-nation union proclaimed that EU enlargement is an "investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity".

But they also said that both the EU and would-be members - which include Ukraine, Moldova and Western Balkan states - would need to make big changes to be ready for an enlarged union.

"Aspiring members need to step up their reform efforts, notably in the area of rule of law," they said in a statement.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has propelled enlargement up the agenda of the EU. Its leaders say the conflict has shown the danger of countries being in contested "grey zones" rather than being firmly part of the EU political camp.

Vsevolod Sviridov: The West is using its climate agenda to hold back African development

boy dry weeds
© Jerome Dalay/APIn Africa
Africa needs its own climate agenda that should be based on independent data collection systems, environmental and water resource monitoring...

As the continent internationally recognized to be most at risk from climate change, Africa also suffers directly from Western attempts to rescue it. The imposition of an external climate agenda on the continent only preserves the West's technological superiority and keeps Africa dependent on it.

With that in mind, a more recent scramble to establish external control over strategic national infrastructure in Africa, such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), carries considerable risks for the continent's population.

Water is the basis of life

Water resource management is an important part of any climate agenda that strives to serve the interests of developing countries in Africa. Not only does it mean providing access to drinking water and generating electricity at hydroelectric power plants, but it also refers to creating irrigation infrastructure for agriculture, aquaculture, and forming regulatory and technological frameworks for industrial water resource management (drainage, mining, offshore oil production, the exploitation of East African Rift Lake resources, etc.).

Meanwhile, the West's "climate agenda," developed for its own needs and interests, focuses on reducing CO2 emissions but neglects the issue of water supplies. Moreover, if the "water issue" were solved for good, this would reduce Africa's dependence on the West, deprive Western businesses of cheap seafood supplies, and boost the development of Africa's agricultural sector, thereby reducing food imports to the continent.

Best of the Web: Israel "in state of war" with Hamas after Palestinian militants launch "unprecedented" incursion into Israel - UPDATES

Hamas
© ReutersHamas members in Gaza
Palestinian militants on Saturday morning launched an "unprecedented" infiltration attack on Israel, the biggest in years, sending fighters over the border from Gaza, firing thousands of rockets and killing dozens of Israelis. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a call-up of reservists and said "we are at war."

Comment: Updates from RT:

Israeli jets strike back at Gaza:
Dozens of Israeli jets have struck Hamas targets in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have said. The airstrikes were launched in response to a surprise attack unleashed by the Palestinian armed group against Israel on Saturday morning.

IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said "Hamas terrorists" had infiltrated the Israeli territory from land, sea and air.

More than 2,200 rockets have been fired from Gaza, according to the spokesman. Hamas claimed that it used more than 5,000 projectiles in just the first 20 minutes of its attack.

Rocket sirens have been heard in many places across Israel, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheba, and Ashkelon.

There were at least seven instances of fighting between IDF troops and Hamas militants, Hagari said.
Tehran proclaims its support for the Hamas attack:
A top adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has offered his "congratulations" to the Palestinian militants who launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory on Saturday, according to the semi-official Iranian news organization ISNA.

"We congratulate the Palestinian fighters," Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said, according to the news source, promising that Tehran "will stand by their side until the liberation of Palestine and Holy Jerusalem."

Speaking in the Iranian capital of Tehran at the 6th International Conference on Solidarity with Palestinian Children and Adolescents on Saturday, Safavi also said that "we support the Al-Aqsa Storm operation."

[...]

Iran has long maintained public support for the Palestinian militant group, principally due to a shared hostility towards Israel. It has been claimed that Iran provided Hamas with financial and political support, as well as weapons and technology, to bolster its arsenal of long-range weapons capable of striking deep into Israeli territory.

Iran has not directly revealed the nature of its support for Hamas. Israeli intelligence has determined that previous attacks by the group in Israel have occurred without Iranian knowledge or involvement.
The Arab states appear to have been caught offguard by the action and call for 'restraint':
A number of Arab states have called for "restraint" and a de-escalation of violence following the launch of the largest attack in years on Israeli territory early on Saturday morning.

Qatar, a Gulf state that does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, issued a statement through its foreign ministry on Saturday in which it said that the ultimate responsibility for the so-called 'Al-Aqsa Storm' operation conducted by Hamas lies with the Israeli government.

Doha added in its statement its desire for both sides in the conflict to exercise restraint, and called on the international community to ensure that Israel does not use the event as an excuse for a "disproportionate" response against Palestinians in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia, another state that does not currently have formal ties with Israel, also released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) to say that it was "closely following up on the unprecedented developments" between "Palestinian factions and the Israeli occupation forces."

The Saudi foreign ministry also said it had repeatedly "warned of the dangers" that might occur "as a result of the continued occupation" and for "depriving the Palestinian people of their legitimate rights."

In recent weeks, the leadership of both Saudi Arabia and Israel have signaled a desire to normalize relations, with the United States understood to be actively negotiating the details. Earlier this week, Hamas expressed its "unwavering position of rejecting all forms of normalization and contact with the Israeli occupation."
Russia and Ukraine weigh in:
Russia and Ukraine, which have been locked in a major conflict for more than a year and a half, have reacted to the escalation of hostilities between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

On Saturday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov urged both sides of the conflict to cease hostilities immediately. Russia's stance on the latest Israel-Palestine escalation was further explained by the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, who released a special statement on the matter.

"We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides for an immediate ceasefire, renunciation of violence, exercising necessary restraint, and the launch, with the assistance of the international community, of a negotiation process aimed at establishing a comprehensive, lasting, and much-awaited peace in the Middle East," Zakharova said.

The escalation in the region is yet another manifestation of the "closed cycle of violence," the spokeswoman noted, adding that Russia believes the 75-year-long conflict cannot be solved through military means. The flare-up is a "result of a chronic failure to comply with relevant UN and Security Council resolutions," as well as a derailment of the peace process by the collective West, Zakharova explained.

Meanwhile, Kiev proclaimed its full support for Israel, denouncing Hamas as "terrorists."

"Ukraine strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel, including rocket attacks against the civilian population in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. We express our support for Israel in its right to defend itself and its people," the Ukrainian foreign minister wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This stance was amplified by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who took to Telegram to urge the "whole world" to support Israel in its fight against Palestinians.

"Horrible reports from Israel. My condolences to everyone whose family and friends died in the terrorist attack ... Israel's right to defense is beyond any doubt," Zelensky stated.
Russian special forces give the IDF a failing grade (machine translation):
Footage of the battle and mopping up of a populated area by the Israeli army has been published. The second video was commented on by Alexander Khodakovsky, deputy chief of the Rosgvardiya for the DNR.

"The footage shows Israeli special forces working to clear the populated area of militants. I have never seen more incompetent work.

If the level of training of the rest of the Israeli army is comparable to what we see on the video - Israel is in for a difficult task.

Too much time has passed since the Six-Day War - it will have to learn how to fight again. And yes: the grilles on the tanks better be welded on."
And this (machine translation):
New footage of a sweep by Israeli special forces in the town of Sderot has been published.

We explain the comment by Alexander Khodakovsky, deputy chief of the Rosgvardiya for the DNR, who called the actions of the special forces "extremely unprofessional".

➖ clumping together, blocking each other's firing sectors, not covering each other, constantly pointing weapons at their own, etc.

➖ In this video they are also crowding where they can now not only be put down by a line, but also covered by drones, which are now being actively used by the Palestinians.

Vodka Nan denies breaking promise to back McCarthy in speakership vote

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
© Loren Elliott/AFP via Getty ImagesFormer House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday denied that she had promised to support her fellow Californian Rep. Kevin McCarthy as he was ousted as speaker.

"Kevin McCarthy says that you essentially broke a promise to him to keep Democrats with him if there was a vote against him. Is that not true?" FOX 11 Los Angeles anchor Elex Michaelson asked Pelosi in a recent interview.

Shaking her head, Pelosi said she had never promised to help McCarthy, R-Calif., remain as speaker.

"Not really. I had no promise to him," Pelosi told FOX 11. "Our Democratic members made that decision."

Comment: Even money that Pelosi did make a promise to McCarthy, who's been curiously cooperative with the Biden admin in certain areas. But the continuously shifting grounds of the budget battle, especially regarding Ukraine may have altered her calculus. She's a politician after all.

War will be a constant in the 21st century, but only a few countries can mount a truly major conflict

russian soldier portrait
© SputnikA Russian soldier in Kherson region, Ukraine.
Until the global balance of power is properly reset, dreams of world peace will have to wait

The military crisis raging in Eastern Europe has dispelled the illusion that the era of large armies is a thing of the past. Military thinking among leading powers is beginning to move away from the 2000s maxim that the goal of war is to dazzle and stun the enemy to lower its technological level and prevent it from waging 21st century warfare, knocking out its high-precision, mobile, deep-coverage capabilities.

Looking at these trends, can we say that warfare in the 21st century will be highly mobile, highly technological, and fought with small numbers? Or, alternatively, are we seeing a return to the historical norm of large armies?

The risk of great power wars is increasing, and small and mobile forces have no significant advantages over large ones based on population mobilization. Indeed, it seems that the characteristics of a major military conflict between comparable powers will be exactly the same as they have been throughout history.

Outrage builds as Biden 'kicks, punches' his dogs

Biden's German shepherd, Biden's dog, Commander bite
The Post’s July 26th cover highlighting the aggressive German shepherd.
If there's one thing most Americans not named Michael Vick can agree on, it's not to abuse dogs. But somebody needs to tell that to Presidentish Joe Biden, whose approval rating was already in the toilet even before today's Judicial Watch revelation.

The conservative watchdog — no pun intended — has filed a Freedom of Information Act suit against the Secret Service regarding reports of multiple bite attacks by the First Dog, Commander.
The dog reportedly has been removed from the White House after its most recent attack on a Secret Service agent and other White House staff. According to a Judicial Watch source, President Biden has mistreated his dogs. Judicial Watch has learned he has punched and kicked his dogs.
This is where I must pause and collect myself before writing any further.

His private bankers at Wells Fargo sent him an email warning that he had just 44 cents left in his account

Hunter Biden withdrew his daughter's college savings to help fund a months-long drug and hooker binge - and still hasn't paid the taxes on it, documents unearthed exclusively by DailyMail.com reveal.

The First Son's profligacy was cast in sharp relief in papers from an IRS whistleblower who investigated him for tax crimes, released by Congress last month.

In late 2018 Hunter was in his 'penultimate odyssey through full blown addiction', according to his memoir, skulking in Connecticut motels and frittering away thousands on prostitutes and crack cocaine.

Comment: Every time one thinks the 'First Son' has hit bottom, he manages to find a new low.

Biden admin to restart deportations to Venezuela amid record-breaking border crossings

© ReutersHundreds of migrants, mostly from Venezuela, weather a thunderstorm along the banks of the Rio Grande
The Biden administration has said that Venezuelan immigrants who illegally entered the United States will be directly deported back to the South American country after a record number crossed the southern border last month.

The shift in policy comes after years of bypassing regular deportations to Venezuela due to nearly two decades of tense relations with its socialist government. The U.S. has imposed sanctions against the Venezuelan government and national individuals for the last 17 years related to its lack of cooperation on anti-drug and counterterrorism efforts.

But now, the Department of Homeland Security has said the federal government plans to resume direct deportations after preliminary data showed approximately 50,000 Venezuelans illegally entered the U.S. last month, shattering the monthly record of 34,000 set in September 2022.
