Scott Ritter: Israel faces 'near impossible task' in Gaza

Israel has conducted a series of ground incursions into Gaza over the course of the past week, each one building on the other, increasing in scope and scale. This appears to be part of an Israeli strategy to lean gradually into an operation that, when finished, falls just short of a general assault on Gaza.

At the end of the day, however, Israel will most likely not be able to defeat the military forces of Hamas and other Palestinian resistance forces defending Gaza. Israel will have to either seek to defeat Hamas by laying siege to the Gaza Strip or commit to a full-scale attack on Gaza designed to clear the territory of all Hamas fighters.

History suggests that any such assault will be extremely difficult to accomplish.

The example of Operation Hubertus, the final German assault on Stalingrad, stands out. The Germans brought in elements of seven elite "Pioneer" battalions — combat engineers with extensive experience in urban warfare, having paved the way for prior German victories in Rostov and Voronezh. The Pioneers were the masters of military demolition, highly trained specialists in house-to-house fighting and the use of explosives and flame throwers. Around 1,800 of these elite assault engineers were assembled for the final drive to push the defending Soviet soldiers from Stalingrad.

On the first day of operations, the Pioneers suffered nearly 30% casualties. After several days of fierce fighting, the Pioneers were stopped less than 100 meters from their objective. However, their forces suffered between 60-70% casualties, and could not proceed further.

Operation Hubertus was doomed to fail from the beginning. According to an account of the fighting:
"The constant bombardment and artillery shelling created a battlefield in which the Soviet defenders largely held the advantage over the assaulting Germans. The fields of rubble and craters were perfectly designed for defensive actions and could be improved with relatively little effort. This also provided ample hunting ground for the ever-present Soviet snipers."

Comment: Hamas has quite the set-up to even the score. The outcome is anyone's guess.

Netanyahu apologizes to Israel's security services

The prime minister has retracted claims that he was not warned of the October 7 Hamas attack...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apologized for a post blaming the country's security services for failing to predict the Hamas attack in which 1,200 people lost their lives. The Jewish state's PM was responding to widespread criticism from the country's media as well as members of his own war cabinet.

On Saturday, after a late night press conference, Netanyahu's office wrote on X:
"Under no circumstances and at no stage was Prime Minister Netanyahu warned of Hamas's war intentions. On the contrary, all the security officials, including the head of military intelligence and the head of the Shin Bet [security service], assessed that Hamas had been deterred and was looking for a settlement."
However, the post sparked a fierce backlash from Israeli officials and politicians.

Comment: Israel has feigned 'surprise' before - in fact Bibi is quite adept at it.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq targets US forces at Al-Tanf base, and the Pentagon confirms that American and coalition forces were subjected to no less than 20 missile and drone attacks in Iraq and Syria after Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced that its resistance fighters targeted the US forces at the Al-Tanf base, located on the border triangle between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, with two drones.

Sources reported to Al Mayadeen that "a missile also targeted American forces in Kharab al-Jir in Syria."

Earlier today, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced the targeting of US forces at the Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq with a drone, confirming a direct hit.

Sources also revealed to Al Mayadeen that the US military base in the Al-Omar oil field, located northeast of Deir Ezzr Governorate, eastern Syria, was targeted with a missile on Friday.

Comment: Bullseye: 'Target practice' is an irrefutable justification for the US to enter the war. (They were waiting for it.)

Leaked: Israeli plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza

The plan advocates the forced transfer of the population of the Gaza Strip to Sinai permanently, and calls for the international community to be leveraged to assist the move...

Israeli culture magazine Mekovit published on 28 October a leaked document issued by Israel's Ministry of Intelligence recommending the occupation of Gaza and total transfer of its 2.3 million inhabitants to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

The document, issued on 13 October, identifies a plan to transfer all residents of the Gaza Strip to North Sinai as the preferred option among three alternatives regarding the future of the Palestinians in Gaza at the end of the current war between Israel and the Hamas-led Palestinian resistance.

The document recommends that Israel evacuate the Gazan population to Sinai during the war, establish tent cities and new cities in northern Sinai to accommodate the deported population, and then create a closed security zone stretching several kilometers inside Egypt. The deported Palestinians would not be allowed to return to any areas near the Israeli border.
The existence of the document does not necessarily indicate that its recommendations are being implemented by Israel's security establishment.

The US and its allies are deliberately eroding global security and risking a nuclear war as they seek to defend their hegemony, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Monday.

Russia and China, meanwhile, are demonstrating a model of cooperation based on equality and agreement not to enhance their own national security at the expense of other nations, he told a regional security forum in Beijing.

Below is a recap of the key points of Shoigu's speech at the 10th Beijing Xiangshan Forum.

Netanyahu ignored warnings from security services - NYT

Israeli security services warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for months that his domestic policies were fueling dangerous political turmoil, the New York Times (NYT) reported on Sunday. Officials reportedly stressed that internal discord was weakening the country's security and strengthening Israel's enemies.

The report was part of an examination of what led up to the latest hostilities between Israel and Gaza. At one point in July, the prime minister even allegedly refused to meet with a senior general who was trying to deliver a threat warning based on classified intelligence.

At the same time, the NYT assessed that Israeli security representatives themselves continuously misjudged the threat posed by Hamas, including in the weeks leading up to the October 7 attack on Israeli territory which resulted in the deaths of up to 1,400 people.

The newspaper reported that Israeli military intelligence had believed since May 2021 that the militant group was not interested in any large-scale attacks from Gaza, but was instead plotting an attack in the West Bank, controlled by the Palestinian Authority, a rival to Hamas.

Comment: There is plenty of evidence that the Israelis not only let the Oct. 7th attack happen, but that they were directly involved in the atrocities on that day:

Germans must be ready for war - defense chief

A new war in Europe is no longer unthinkable and German society must adapt to this reality, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has claimed as he called for increased military spending.

In an interview with Germany's ZDF broadcaster on Sunday, Pistorius insisted that Germans "must again get used to the thought that the danger of a war in Europe could pose a threat." Discussing Berlin's defense capabilities, the minister called on his compatriots to "become war-capable."

The official cited the Ukraine conflict as well as hostilities between Israel and Hamas as proof that fighting could also erupt elsewhere.

Pistorius brushed off criticism that Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government has been too slow to build up the German armed forces, claiming that they are working as rapidly as possible to make up for 30 years of neglect and underfunding. The minister promised that the Bundeswehr would be unrecognizable in three or four years' time, and suggested that the German military is already among the strongest in NATO and Europe.

Beijing warns that Biden-Xi talks might not happen

China's Foreign Ministry has pointed out that hopes for talks next month between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping may be dashed unless Washington can start abiding by an agreement that the two leaders reached last year.

At issue is a proposed Biden-Xi summit on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting in San Francisco, which is scheduled to begin on November 14. White House officials have told US media outlets that the talks are "expected" to happen, but the Chinese government has not yet confirmed that Xi has committed to meeting with Biden.

The road to a San Francisco summit will not be "smooth sailing," and the two governments cannot rely on "autopilot" to make it happen, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Sunday in a statement. "To this end, the two sides must effectively return to Bali," the ministry added, referring to the consensus that Xi and Biden reached when they met last November in Indonesia.

The ministry issued its statement following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to Washington for meetings on Friday and Saturday with Biden, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Wang said that although Beijing attaches "great importance" to stabilizing Sino-US relations, the two governments must put into practice their past commitments to "remove interference, overcome obstacles, enhance consensus and gather outcomes."

Israeli approach to ground war in Gaza aligns with U.S. Advice, officials say

The initial decision to undertake limited ground incursions rather than a full-scale invasion appears to follow guidance from top U.S. military officials.

Israel's apparent decision to hold off on a full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip and instead conduct more limited ground incursions, at least initially, aligns with suggestions that the U.S. defense secretary, Lloyd J. Austin III, made to his Israeli counterparts in recent days, American officials said on Saturday.

Biden administration officials warned that it was hard to tell what Israel would eventually do, since increased airstrikes and expanded ground incursions in the past three days indicated a more aggressive posture.

US says Netanyahu has to rein in 'extremist' settlers in West Bank

jewish settlers west bank
The United States is warning Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to rein in "extremist" settlers in the West Bank in the wake of reports of violence against Palestinians.

"Well, we believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu does have a responsibility to rein in the extremist settlers on the West Bank who are, as President Biden put it a few days ago, pouring fuel on the fire," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on CNN's State of the Union.

"And it is totally unacceptable to have extremist settler violence against innocent people in the West Bank. That is something that we will continue to press on," he added.

Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has escalated since militant group Hamas launched a surprise deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, prompting Israel to declare war on the group.
