Seeds Hold the Key to a GMO-free Food Future

Terminator Seeds
A single food seed can be as tiny as a grain of sand. Yet many say the fate of the entire organic industry rests upon our efforts to protect the integrity of these small, but vital agricultural inputs.

"Seed is the first resource in our food production chain, so its integrity is vital to the success of organic farmers. Yet little has been done to address the issue of genetic contamination," says Kristina Hubbard, director of advocacy for the Organic Seed Alliance. "I don't think seed is getting enough attention."

As the natural foods industry gears up for an unprecedented assault on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), much emphasis has been placed on convincing government to label foods containing GMOs and on swaying grocers and manufacturers to rid them from the retail shelf. But Hubbard and others say those actions will mean little if farmers can't find clean, GMO-free seed to plant in the first place.

Superweeds Go Mainstream

Image
© Lost in Fog
I don't expect that Monsanto takes much notice when articles about superweeds - plants that have developed resistance to its flagship RoundUp herbicide and its active ingredient glyphosate - appear in Grist, Scientific American, Mother Jones or even The New York Times. That's nothing but typical "fearmongering" from the "liberal media" and the biotech behemoth can laugh it off all the way to the bank.

But when the mainstream business press writes lead paragraphs like this:
Justin Cariker grabs a 7-foot-tall Palmer pigweed at his farm, bending the wrist-thick stem to reveal how it has overwhelmed the cotton plant beneath it. This is no ordinary weed: Over time it has developed resistance to Monsanto's best-selling herbicide, Roundup. Hundreds of such "superweeds" are rising defiantly across this corner of the Mississippi Delta. "We're not winning the battle," Cariker, owner of Maud Farms in Dundee, Miss., says as he looks at weeds that tower over his infested cotton field like spindly green scarecrows.
...as Bloomberg BusinessWeek did under the headline "Attack of the Superweeds," I have to believe that Monsanto's top brass starts to worry.

Comment: For a more in depth look at the 'Superweed' issue plaguing America's industrial agribusiness industry read the following articles:

US: 'Superweed' explosion threatens Monsanto heartlands

The Escalating Chemical War on Weeds

Monsanto's Superweeds Come Home to Roost: 11 Million U.S. Acres are Infested:
So the dramatic recent increases in resistant weeds have occurred despite years of urging farmers to use additional chemicals to avoid resistance. Weed scientists now say that superweeds from GMO crops infest over 11 million acres of US farmland - nearly five times more acreage than just three years ago - at a cost to US farmers of $1 billion a year.

What irks many farmers facing superweed problems and rising costs (not to mention consumers facing the prospects of more chemicals sprayed on our food and environment) is that Monsanto markets the use of a single herbicide as the main benefit of its GMO Roundup Ready crops. Even after all the publicity about this GMO failure, the "Council for Biotechnology Information," a front-group funded by Monsanto and other GMO crop producers, continues to put forth this now laughable claim.

White House Pressure for a Donor?

Philip Falcone
© Jessica Rinaldi / FILE / Landov
Philip Falcone, CEO, CIO, and senior managing director of Harbinger Capital Partners speaks at the 16th annual Sohn Investment Conference in New York May 25, 2011.

The four-star Air Force general who oversees Air Force Space Command walked into a highly secured room on Capitol Hill a week ago to give a classified briefing to lawmakers and staff, and dropped a surprise. Pressed by members, Gen. William Shelton said the White House tried to pressure him to change his testimony to make it more favorable to a company tied to a large Democratic donor.

The episode - confirmed by The Daily Beast in interviews with administration officials and the chairman of a congressional oversight committee - is the latest in a string of incidents that have given Republicans sudden fodder for questions about whether the Obama administration is politically interfering in routine government matters that affect donors or fundraisers. Already, the FBI and a House committee are investigating a federal loan guarantee to a now failed solar firm called Solyndra that is tied to a large Obama fundraiser.

Now the Pentagon has been raising concerns about a new wireless project by a satellite broadband company in Virginia called LightSquared, whose majority owner is an investment fund run by Democratic donor Philip Falcone.

US: FDA abducted an American citizen in illegal war against herbal cancer cures

fda

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration masterminded an illegal international abduction of an American citizen as part of its illegal war against natural cancer treatment products, NaturalNews can now reveal. Gregory Caton, an herbal product formulator living in Ecuador, was kidnapped at gunpoint in 2009, forced onto an American Airlines commercial jet in Guayaquil, and flown to Miami as part of an "extraordinary rendition" operation which involved U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials knowingly providing false information to Interpol (among other crimes) and recruiting what appear to be FBI agents who illegally operated on the ground in Ecuador.

This revelation fits the pattern of rising criminality throughout the U.S. federal government, where even the ATF was recently caught running guns into Mexico and specifically arming Mexican drug gangs as part of its now-exposed Fast and Furious operation.

NaturalNews has now acquired documentation proving that Greg Caton was illegally stalked and then abducted in Ecuador by U.S. State Department agents who bribed local officials and military personnel in Ecuador to help carry out the criminal acts. Some of those co-conspirators within the Ecuadorian government are named below.

The documentation proving all this hinges on Greg Caton's Direccion Nacional De Migracion report, which can be viewed here.

Dog Poet Transmitting.......

'May your noses always be cold and wet'.

I have been putting myself through hoops since last evening when I read this, wondering what I should say and if I should say anything. I was especially astonished by the admonitions given to the Germans about being responsible for the Palestinian troubles, however convoluted the argument. If anyone should take responsibility for The Palestinian Genocide it is Israel and this should be proclaimed by those Israelis who present themselves as friends of The Palestinians. Those who call themselves Israelis have no right to be in Palestine in the first place and they are only there through devious maneuverings and pornographic revisionism.

I'm not here to debate the extent and reality of their marketplace holocaust and I've no inclination to deny or question the details. What I do know is that when you make it against the law to question something then there's something wrong with the facts because the only reason for worldwide suppression of inquiry would be that the facts wouldn't hold water against it. To question the affair is the real province of those who present themselves as agents of truth, in seeming opposition to their countrymen. No one can be an agent of truth who does not only admit but also proclaim that Israel was behind 9/11. No one can be an agent of truth who parrots official lines and never brings certain untenable absurdities to light. Of course, this requires the courage of being capable of it.

Hanging corpses carry threat to Mexico Internet users

Forensic personnel remove a body found in Monterrey city, Mexico in August.
The bloodstained bodies of a man and a woman were found hanging from a bridge in northeast Mexico Tuesday, along with threatening messages to people who report drug violence on social networks.

The messages lay near the two bodies, found half naked, alluding to websites set up for people to report drug violence in the area, police said.

"That will happen to all of them," read the text of one message signed with the letter 'Z' usually associated with the Zetas drug gang.

Nuevo Laredo lies in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, on the US border, where the Zetas are blamed for many violent attacks.

US: Attack Watch, New Obama Campaign Site to 'Fight Smears,' Becomes Laughing Stock of Conservatives

As the 2012 presidential campaign heats up, President Obama's campaign team has set up a new Web site, AttackWatch.com, to challenge negative statements about the president made by Republican presidential candidates and conservatives.

Obama for America national field director Jeremy Bird told ABC News that the site's goal is to offer "resources to fight back" against attacks. Mostly, that means fact checking statements from the likes of GOP presidential contenders Mitt Romney and Rick Perry and conservative commentator Glenn Beck and offering evidence to the contrary. The site is designed in bold red and black colors, and uses statements like "support the truth" and "fight the smears."

The response to the site has been less than stellar.

On Twitter, where the Web site has an account to help Obama supporters submit evidence of "attacks" on the president using the hashtag #attackwatch, nearly every tweet about the site - mostly from conservatives - has ridiculed it.

Comment: Obama's record speaks for itself, nothing has changed since the Bush years. So what are Conservatives complaining about?

Global Stock Markets Down on Debt Fears as Euro Falls

Image

The FTSE 100 has been falling in general for a few weeks
US shares staged a late recovery on Monday to post only their second positive close of the month.

Earlier, European and Asian markets fell on fears that Greece may default.

A series of news reports that Germany may be preparing for an "orderly default" by Greece also sent the euro lower.

German officials sought to shore up confidence on Monday, saying the stability of Greece and the euro was "the common goal".

Bank shares were hardest hit, with France's BNP Paribas closing down 12%.
