'We're leaving the dollar': BRICS to launch independent financial system, new single currency also proposed - Moscow

Countries of the BRICS economic bloc are currently working on the launch of a financial system that would be independent of the dominance of third parties, according to the Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov.

The volume of Russia's transactions in national currencies with fellow BRICS nations is constantly growing, the envoy said on Saturday in Beijing, speaking at the 12th World Peace Forum (WPF). Morgulov highlighted that Russia-China trade turnover had reached $240 billion and that 92% of settlements were being conducted in rubles and yuans.

"We are leaving the dollar-dominated space and developing the mechanism and tools for a truly independent financial system," the ambassador said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Morgulov also said that introducing a new single currency is still some way off but stressed that the group - which recently expanded and now comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Iran and Egypt - is "moving in this direction."

The Emperor has no mind: The scripted "overthrow" of Biden

The first 2024 U.S. Presidential debate between incumbent Joe Biden and challenger Donald Trump was, in itself, somewhat uneventful. It was the aftermath which gave us the big surprise which now dominates headlines across the country - Democrats want Joe Biden to drop out.

The uneventfulness of the debate itself runs contrary to the current buzz in the corporate-owned legacy media, but it is an important truth to remember as we try to parse out what indeed is the strategy of the American political elite for Election Day come November.

Besides the hilarious exchange between a mumbling bumbling Biden and an uber-confident Trump over declared height and golf handicaps, both candidates performed as we had expected. And therein lies the rub.

Germany to abandon Niger airbase as talks break down and it pivots to Russia

The German army will end operations at its airbase in Niger by August 31 following the breakdown of talks with the Sahel country's ruling junta, Germany's defense ministry said Saturday.

All Bundeswehr soldiers stationed at the base will be withdrawn by August 31 and German military cooperation with Niger will be put to an end, the ministry added.

The breakdown in negotiations marks Niger's latest diplomatic shift away from the West since a coup d'etat in July 2023 ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and brought the current military leadership to power.

Since then, Niger has turned towards Russia and Iran and away from the United States and former colonial ruler France.

The US president is now officially a wizard-king

The recent decision on presidential immunity by the SCOTUS is more than just a victory for Donald Trump.

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has handed down a decision in a case brought by the former and likely future President Donald Trump. It marked a victory for Trump because the court has mostly followed his legal team and recognized - or created - a practically impregnable wall of legal immunity around him. Or to be precise, around Trump's actions during his time as the 45th American president between January 2017 and January 2021. This will serve to shield him from accusations pending in a lower, federal court, that he effectively tried to stage a quiet coup when voted out of office in November 2020, which peaked with a mob storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The immediate fallout of SCOTUS coming down on the side of Trump and his ongoing and thriving campaign to recapture the presidency is obvious. At the very least, the court's decision has delayed the attempt to prosecute the former president for his response to losing the 2020 election. And, in this situation, stalling is very likely to be the same as stopping. If Trump wins, as is likely, he will snuff out whatever remains of the case against him. His main interest is that no conviction can be reached before the election, and that is now certain.

Apart from these direct effects, everyone agrees that this is a decision of lasting, even historic significance. Beyond that, however, disagreement prevails. Not just disagreement but, as so often is the case in the US now, fierce antagonism, with two sides of America facing each other in absolute distrust and even contempt.

Are traditional international institutions viable in the New World Order?

The likes of the G7 and NATO are designed to secure Western hegemony. How will they adapt to its end?

One of the most significant challenges that the global community of nations is currently facing in relation to the end of Western hegemony is the concurrent risk of the collapse of the entire framework of international cooperation: both in terms of practical implementation and its conceptual underpinnings. However, this could also present an opportunity for the rest of the world, including Russia, to develop new institutions and frameworks in the decades to come, which could bear little resemblance to those that exist today. This is likely to be necessary, since the current system of institutions, norms, and values that have emerged over the past several centuries has been constructed around the dominance of a select group of states, and is fundamentally designed to serve the interests of that group. Therefore, it would not be feasible to replicate existing practices.

However, new practices may not be able to achieve the same level of success, simply due to the fundamental principles that are embedded in them from the outset.

On a practical level, this implies that countries outside of the "collective West" will not be able to replicate, in their interstate relations, the practices established to coordinate the efforts of the United States and Europe in suppressing the rest of the world.

'Putin endorsed Le Pen': Russiagate comes to France

LePen

If you thought the Western establishment was done shifting blame for its own fiascos, think again.

It is perfectly predictable and yet a sorry spectacle every time it happens: the great big bad Russia panic whenever, and that's frequently nowadays, Western liberals and Centrists are losing their grip.

This time it's the turn of France. With the far-right/right-populist National Rally (RN) under Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella succeeding at the polls as never before, French and other Western mainstream media are serving up the same stale old dish of fearmongering and, most importantly, blame shifting.

Russiagate, or really Russia Rage (as in Road Rage), and its many copies, have been with us since Hillary Clinton and her cult were incapable of facing the fact that she lost the 2016 US presidential election because she is a dreadful person with no redeeming graces - and unlike her naturally gifted if shifty and immoral husband, a catastrophically incompetent politician. And like every good form of insanity, Russia Rage is absolutely immune to both falsification and its own record of failure, even as a piece of demagoguery. We know that the only real scandal about "Russiagate" was that it was a hoax, the result of massive exaggeration, outright lying, and all-round manipulation by Democratic party operatives and their media allies. We also know that it did not even work on its own dishonest terms.

Russia Rage was, in American journalist Matt Taibbi's words, an "epic disaster." Indeed, if it had any political effect, then to ultimately help - not damage - its target, Donald Trump. Almost a decade after the inception of the "Russiagate" hoax, Trump is back, stronger than ever and set to capture the American presidency again. And this time, his organization and plans are much more elaborate and ambitious, and, just now, obliging conservative judges at the Supreme Court have also equipped him with almost perfect legal immunity.

Federal Judge Aileen Cannon pauses deadlines in Trump documents case after SCOTUS immunity ruling

The federal judge presiding over former President Trump's Florida case has paused several court deadlines to consider presidential immunity.

Trump's legal team presented a motion Friday seeking "a partial stay of further proceedings" in the case brought by special counsel Jack Smith "until President Trump's motions based on Presidential immunity and the Appointments and Appropriations Clauses are resolved."

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Saturday agreed to hear arguments, allowing two weeks for both camps to prepare briefs regarding the relevance of the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity.

Comment: Judge Cannon is the only magistrate in all the various judicial farces swirling around Trump that actually seems interested in properly applying the law. It's a wonder she hasn't been forced off the case by now.

White House visitor logs show Parkinson's expert met with Biden's doc

Dr. Kevin Cannard, a prominent neurologist specializing in Parkinson's disease, attended a significant meeting at the White House
President Joe Biden's doctor met with a neurologist who is reportedly a Parkinson's disease expert at the White House earlier this year, visitor logs show.

The New York Post first published a story on Saturday about the logs as questions swirl about the commander-in-chief's health following a fumbling debate performance less than two weeks ago.

Online records show Kevin Cannard, whose LinkedIn page shows him as being a "Movement Disorders specialist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center," met with White House physician Kevin O'Connor at 5 p.m. ET on January 17.

Comment: The Western Journal adds:
Dr. Kevin Cannard, a Parkinson's expert at Walter Reed Medical Center, met with Dr. Kevin O'Connor and two other people at the White House clinic on Jan. 17, the records showed.

Dr. John E. Atwood, a cardiologist at Walter Reed, and another as-yet-unidentified individual were in the meeting.

Jackson said because O'Connor's main role is to serve as Biden's doctor, "It's highly likely they were talking about Biden."

"He should only be [regularly] treating the president and the first family," Jackson said. "I believe he and Jill Biden have led the cover up. Kevin O'Connor is like a son to Jill Biden — she loves him. It's crazy."

Howard said Biden's facial appearance and gait were also symptoms that could indicate the presence of Parkinson's disease.

"I am not saying its Parkinson's disease. I am just pointing out that there are features to him that are consistent with Parkinson's disease," he said.

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas, a physician, said buzz about Biden having Parkinson's is not new.

Many medical people have "suspected for several years that the president might be suffering from Parkinson's disease," he said.

SOTT Focus: The Burqa Ban Question

Warning: I'm going to say a number of things in this post that will upset a variety of people on both sides of this issue. Don't get your undies in a twist at the beginning; read to the end.

I've given a lot of thought to the hijab issue in the past, and now that Marine LePen says she wants to ban them in France, maybe it is time to think about it some more and try to clarify my thinking. First, let me define a 'society'. It is a group of interdependent people distinguished by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, common culture, activities and interests.

Having said that, let me say that, as a Western woman, my gut reaction to the hijab WITHIN Western society, is quite negative; it doesn't belong there. It seems to express and represent a deep shame about a woman being a woman. It is part of a larger set of rather misogynistic cultural norms that are generally incomprehensible to the Western mind. A lot can be written about this, but that would make this too lengthy. I can just say shortly that it is a practice that originated with the idea that the hijab or burqa is designed to prevent men from looking 'perversely' at women. A woman, simply by being female, is something that must be hidden because she can incite negative outcomes in society by her mere existence. Men, at the same time, are too weak and hapless to resist. From my perspective, that attitude is insulting to both men and women.

Keir Starmer, new Labour PM of UK, is 'kind of' Jewish

Keir Starmer's wife Victoria is Jewish, and the Prime Minister has said he holds Shabbat dinners every week.

When Keir Starmer makes the move to Number 10 following his landslide victory, the Prime Minister's official residence will house a Jewish family for the first time in recent history.

Starmer's wife, Victoria, has kept a relatively low profile throughout her husband's campaign. The former solicitor was born to a Jewish father with Polish ancestry, and her mother converted to the faith. The couple are now raising their children in the faith, and belong to the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St Johns Wood, in London.

Keir Starmer has regularly spoken about the importance of Judaism to his family, and has shared that Friday night dinners are a tradition. Shabbat is a "rock in the week," he has said.

The new Prime Minister has said he is keen to raise children who "recognise the faith of part of their grandfather's family," and Shabbat dinners are an important part of that. "Every week there's a challah [bread], and we say kiddush [prayer and blessing over wine]," Starmer said of his family's traditions.

Earlier this week, Rishi Sunak criticised Starmer for saying that as Prime Minister, he would still take the evening off on Fridays - something which Starmer suggested was insensitive and had antisemitic undertones.
