UN shown 'drone evidence' of Ukrainian attack on Europe's largest nuclear plant

Moscow has rejected a resolution demanding the return of the Zaporozhye NPP to Kiev's control.

Russia has urged the UN not to support Ukraine's claims to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the largest such facility in Europe, accusing Kiev of launching strikes that frequently jeopardize the safety of the plant.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly meeting on Thursday, Russia's deputy representative to the organization, Dmitry Polyansky, displayed a Ukrainian drone that allegedly hit the plant earlier this year. He said that attacks on the station by Kiev's forces are "regular and numerous."

Polyansky, referring to the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said:
"The IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi formulated [principles] for ensuring safety at the Zaporozhye NPP. One of these principles - the prohibition of attacks on the plant - is regularly violated by Ukraine, as the agency experts at the [site] have the opportunity to verify. There is enough evidence of this - I have in my hands the wreckage of a Ukrainian UAV that attacked the Zaporozhye NPP on April 7."

Saudis 'threatened' G7 over Russian assets - Bloomberg

The US and UK had wanted to confiscate the frozen sovereign funds

The Group of Seven "likely" abandoned the US plan to expropriate Russia's frozen central bank assets due to a "veiled threat" from Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg has reported.

The US and UK had been pushing for outright seizure of around $280 billion in Russian sovereign funds, which the West had frozen in 2022 citing the Ukraine conflict. The EU, where most of the immobilized assets are held, was reluctant to see the euro endangered by the possible backlash.

Saudi Arabia "privately hinted" that it might sell some of its EU debt holdings if the G7 went ahead with the confiscation plans, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday citing "people familiar with the matter."

Kremlin hits out at 'irresponsible' new British PM

Keir Starmer has said Ukraine can use UK-donated weapons as it sees fit, according to Bloomberg

Remarks by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer about Ukraine having a free hand in using donated British weapons against Russia are irresponsible and escalatory, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Wednesday.

Comment: The above statement from Keir Starmer and the response from Peskov is perhaps nothing new. Starmer continues the trend of his predecessors, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Still it may confirm for now the direction events are taking.

About two months ago, in early May, the now former British MP, Andrew Bridgen, gave his impression of the political situation. Bridgen said the UK is basically at war with Russia but the government is waiting until later to make it official. We don't know yet if that will happen, but he also said that Rishi Sunak wants out, that he does not want to become a wartime PM. In June, after the European Parliamentary elections, Sunak called for early election though he could have waited until the fall, and oh boy, did he get out!

There are probably other options on the table, what about this article: Okay, so who has "bubonic plague" on their 2024 disaster bingo card? Maybe it will be none of these. For now, we will have to wait and see.

US plan to deploy missiles in Germany a 'direct threat' - Moscow

Washington's announcement could revive the arms race and deal a blow to global stability, Ambassador Anatoly Antonov has said

US plans to deploy long-range missiles in Europe are a threat to global security and could pave the way for an escalation of already tense relations between Moscow and NATO, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov has said.

On Wednesday, the US and Germany issued a joint statement that Washington "will begin episodic deployments of the long-range fires capabilities of its Multi-Domain Task Force in Germany in 2026, as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future."

The systems will include SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles with ranges of up to 460km and 2,400km, respectively, as well as developmental hypersonic weapons, according to Washington. The assets have a "significantly longer range than current land-based fires in Europe," the statement added.

Russia vows 'military response' to US missile deployment plans

Moscow views Washington's move as a method of intimidation, its Deputy Foreign Minister has said

Russia will calmly prepare a military response to US plans to station long-range missiles in Germany, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Thursday.

Washington announced plans on Wednesday to start deploying long-range weapons in Germany in 2026, including SM-6 and Tomahawk systems, "as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future."

The latest American plans are just another escalation of tensions by the West and "one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost the main component of the NATO and US" approach towards Russia, Ryabkov said.

Land-based missiles with a range between 500km and 5,500km were banned on European soil under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. In 2019, the US pulled out of the Cold War-era pact, accusing Moscow of having violated it.

Ryabkov said deploying US missiles to Germany is primarily aimed at damaging Russia's security.

"Without nerves, without emotions, we will develop, first of all, a military response to this new game," the diplomat said, adding that the Russian military had already "taken this message to task."

The weapons systems to be deployed in Germany will include the SM-6 anti-air missile, which has a range of up to 460km, and the Tomahawk cruise missile, which can reportedly strike targets more than 2,500km away.

Berlin and Washington released a joint statement announcing the plan following talks at NATO's annual summit in Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow would respond in kind to Washington's deployment of intermediate and shorter-range missiles. In June, the president said that Russia might resume production of previously banned missile systems, citing the "hostile actions" of the US.
Does the US think that creating more tensions in Europe with the deployment will help European businesses and capital to shift to the "safe haven" of the US or help convince the tax payers to pay more for defence and and thus help to support the Military Industrial Complex, see NATO preparing for 'protracted wars' - Pentagon?
Is the US hoping to maintain its control of the vassals within Europe and prevent them from joining up with the rest of Eurasia?
Is it, as some bureaucrats. politicians and the media might say, to protect western values, freedom, equality, democracy, the rule of law, .... ?
Or is it rather to put the citizens in a state of fear that will make them more controllable?
A result of this move might be that more people in Europe will come to realize that the direction events are heading, is not what they would like, and peace movements will become stronger.

The capital of the Palestinian enclave will be "a dangerous combat zone," the Israeli army has warned

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has instructed all remaining residents of Gaza City to flee south towards Deir al-Balah. The call on Wednesday came as the Israeli military intensified combat operations in the Palestinian enclave, including a raid on a UN refugee agency compound that it claimed was being used by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters.

The IDF has issued several evacuation warnings in Gaza City in the past few days, as Israeli troops carried out operations in its western, southern, and eastern neighborhoods, according to the Times of Israel. Around 200,000 Palestinians remain in the northern part of the enclave, the newspaper said, quoting IDF estimates.

The group of developing economies should act together to strengthen their global influence, the Russian president has said

Members of the BRICS economic group could establish their own parliament in the future, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the tenth parliamentary forum of the bloc in St. Petersburg on Thursday.

The Russian leader noted that the number of participants had increased this year. He said Russia, as the current chair of the group, would ramp up efforts to ensure that the four new members of the bloc were effectively integrated following their accession earlier this year.

BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. The group expanded this year when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates became full members.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the government: Rep. Goldman insists that the country is safe in the hands of others

Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY)
Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, wrote "The President [of the Galaxy] in particular is very much a figurehead — he wields no real power whatsoever. [...] His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it." This week, Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY) seemed to be taking the Hitchhiker's Guide as a guide for government. When asked about the alarming physical and mental decline of President Joe Biden, Goldman suggested that it really does not matter. In responding to a call for Biden's removal under the 25th Amendment, Goldman suggested that the Republic is safe because it is safely in the hands of people around Biden. It is an argument that flips the 25th Amendment on its head and embraces the idea of a figurehead president.

After the Hur report was released noting the diminishment of the President's faculties, Goldman was one of the most vocal in shouting the Special Counsel down. He went public declaring that the President is "sharper than anyone I've spoken to" on public policy issues.

'You're worried if he knows which direction he's going': Nervous world leaders greet Biden at NATO

bidengroup
© Evan Vucci/APAs President Joe Biden greeted leaders and posed for photos on Wednesday, foreign diplomats were glued to his movements, highly attuned to the tenor of his voice — waiting, in many cases, to see the version of the president they saw in that first debate.
The contrast couldn't be starker: President Joe Biden, physically and politically frail, presiding over what could be his final NATO Summit at a moment when the alliance has never been so strong.

That tension is not lost on NATO officials from multiple European nations who say they are alarmed by Biden's apparent decline and increasingly concerned at the prospect of seeing an ardent champion of the alliance replaced in November by a hostile Donald Trump.

NATO officials are both saddened at how Biden's fortunes have turned and frustrated that the storyline has distracted from what was to be a celebratory summit. They are also increasingly resigned to his defeat this November, which they fear could halt or reverse the 32-member alliance's recent momentum, threatening Ukraine's ability to fend off Russia's onslaught and the broader stability that has been the bedrock of the organization since its Cold War creation.

"He didn't look good," said a Washington-based diplomat from one of those countries.

Luna's bid to force Garland to hand over Biden-Hur tapes fails in House

Rep Anna Paulina Luna's resolution would have fined AG Merrick Garland $10K per day until release of Biden-Hur audio

House Democrats and some Republicans joined together to block Rep. Anna Paulina Luna's bid to fine Attorney General Merrick Garland $10,000 per day until he released audio tapes of President Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur.

Democrats failed to block the resolution from hitting the floor on Wednesday evening, setting up a vote on the measure for Thursday.

Luna has for weeks threatened to force a vote on holding Garland in "inherent contempt" and appealed to both Republicans and Democrats to support the effort, citing concerns about Biden's mental acuity spurred by his disastrous performance in the CNN Presidential Debate.

Comment: Garland seems Teflon-coated. Who is protecting him that he can blithely ignore or subvert the very laws he is supposed to honor?

Boondoggle: Gaza 'pier', Biden's costliest publicity stunt to be dismantled permanently

gaza pier us navy
© U.S. Department of DefenseMembers of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and the Israeli military put in place the Trident Pier, a temporary pier to deliver humanitarian aid, on the Gaza coast, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, May 16, 2024.
The Pentagon's Gaza humanitarian pier project, which has been troubled from day one and spent more time out of commission than it's actually been in operation, will soon be scrapped altogether, the Associated Press reports Tuesday.

The report says this is the 'final blow' for the pier after rough seas left it needing constant pauses for repairs: "The pier built by the U.S. military to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza will be reinstalled Wednesday to be used for several days, but then the plan is to pull it out permanently, several U.S. officials said."

Thus it looks like it will not longer be there by the end of this month. "The officials said the goal is to clear whatever aid has piled up in Cyprus and on the floating dock offshore and get it to the secure area on the beach in Gaza," the report adds, and notes that's when the army will begin the final dismantle.
