Dmitry Trenin: This European region could be the next Ukraine

Ckpoint

The conflict between Russia and the West won't end after Kiev is no longer viable as a proxy.

The "Ukraine crisis" is not actually an accurate name for what is happening now in relations between Russia and the West. This confrontation is global. It touches virtually every functional area - from finance to pharmaceuticals to sport - and spans many geographical regions.

In Europe, which has become the epicenter of this confrontation, the highest level of tension outside Ukraine is now in the Baltic region. The question often asked in Russia (and in the West) is: Will this become the next theater of war?

In Western Europe and North America, a scenario has long been contemplated in which the Russian Army, after its victory in Ukraine, continues to march forward - next seeking to conquer the Baltic republics and Poland. The purpose of this simple propaganda fantasy is clear: to convince Western Europeans that if they do not "invest fully" in supporting Kiev, they may end up with a war on their own territory.

It is telling that almost no one in the EU dares to publicly ask whether Moscow is interested in a direct armed conflict with NATO. What would its aims be in such a war? And what price would it be willing to pay? Obviously, even posing such questions could lead to accusations of spreading Russian propaganda.

Comment: The future via Russia is crystal clear.

Putin meets Abbas: Why the Russia-Palestine partnership endures

East Jerusalem sees Moscow as a crucial partner in securing stability, both domestically and in the wider Middle East.

The Middle East is currently engulfed in a state of profound uncertainty, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran following the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. In this volatile environment, some actors are compelled to seek clarity and reinforce their strategies. This is evident in the actions of President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian National Authority, who made a working visit to Moscow from August 12 to 14, his first since 2021.

During his visit, Abbas held a three-hour closed-door meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Following the discussions, Abbas expressed hope for continued humanitarian support from Russia, emphasizing that Palestine is in dire need of assistance given the complex situation it faces. He highlighted that cooperation with Russia in the realm of humanitarian aid is crucial for the survival and well-being of the Palestinian people. President Putin reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to providing comprehensive support to Palestine, underlining Russia's active role in assisting the Palestinian cause.

Comment: Skimming the fan club descriptions of Russian diplomacy, there are salient points made in this article, as well as glimpses of the Palestinian situation from Abbas.

So what really happened in Kursk?

An extremely serious debate is already raging among selected circles of power/intelligence in Moscow - and the heart of the matter could not be more incandescent.

To cut to the chase: what really happened in Kursk? Was the Russian Ministry of Defense caught napping? Or did they see it coming and profited to set up a deadly trap for Kiev?

Well-informed players willing to share a few nuggets on condition of anonymity all stress the extreme sensitivity of it all. An intel pro though has offered what may be interpreted as a precious clue: "It is rather surprising to see such a concentration of force was unnoticed by satellite and drone surveillance at Kursk, but I would not exaggerate its importance."

Another intel pro prefers to stress that "the foreign intel section is weak as it was very badly run." This is a direct reference to the state of affairs after former security overseer Nikolai "Yoda" Patrushev, during Putin's post-inauguration reshuffle, was transferred from his post as secretary of the Security Council to serve as a special presidential aide.

The sources, cautiously, seem to converge on a very serious possibility: "There seems to have been a breakdown in intel; they do not seem to have noticed the accumulation of troops at the Kursk border".

Ukraine has been given approval to use Canadian-donated tanks and armored vehicles on Russian soil, according to a statement by Canada's Department of National Defense on Thursday. Kiev is currently waging a large-scale incursion into Russia's Kursk Region.

Ottawa has donated to Kiev a total of eight German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks as well several dozen armored combat vehicles, hundreds of armored patrol vehicles, and several M-777 howitzers. Last month, the Canadian government also announced an additional $367 million military aid package for Kiev.

"Ukrainians know best how to defend their homeland, and we're committed to supporting their capacity," Canadian Defense Department spokesperson Andree-Anne Pulin told the media on Thursday.

"Canada places no geographic restrictions on the use of military equipment that we donate to Ukraine," Pulin added.

It is unclear how much, if any, donated Canadian equipment is currently being used in Kiev's incursion into Kursk Region, which it launched on August 6, marking the largest Ukrainian cross-border offensive since the outbreak of the conflict in 2022.

Russia's Defense Ministry has reported that the Ukrainian advance has since been halted and that Kiev has suffered considerable losses during the operation. Moscow has estimated that Ukraine has lost some 2,600 troops and hundreds of pieces of military hardware units, including 37 tanks and 32 armored personnel carriers since the start of the offensive.

Donetsk shopping center ablaze after Ukrainian strike

Galaktika shopping center caught fire
A massive fire has broken out at a shopping mall in the Russian city of Donetsk after the building was shelled by Ukraine's Armed Forces, the leader of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, said on Friday.

Footage of the blaze has been shared on social media by onlookers. TASS news agency initially reported that the Galaktika shopping center caught fire after a shell strike on the Petrovsky district of the DPR capital. According to local authorities, the area was targeted five times on Friday with 155-mm artillery.

Pushilin later confirmed the attack, writing on his official Telegram channel that at around noon on Friday, Ukraine's forces targeted the area, causing the Galaktika shopping center to catch fire. Donetsk Central Hospital No. 14 was also damaged in the bombardment, he said.

According to preliminary information, at least seven civilians are injured, including a teenager, Pushilin said.

Firefighters are working to contain the blaze, which has spread to more than 10,000 square meters, the official noted, adding that their work is being complicated by the "operational situation," forcing emergency services to keep a safe distance.

Ivan Timofeev: Here's why Russia doesn't care about Trump

Despite his lofty talk, the ex-president won't be able to change the diplomatic course

Former US President Donald Trump has already stated on several occasions that he could improve relations with Russia and solve the Ukrainian crisis, if he returns to the White House. He has also insisted that he would never have allowed the conflict to start. However, such statements should be seen as rhetoric and populism rather than Trump's actual policy agenda.

The tycoon-turned-politician will not be able to do what he claims, and for many reasons. There is the example of his first term, when he made such statements but failed to improve relations with Moscow. On the one hand, he was severely handicapped by the so-called "RussiaGate" hoax election scandal and, on the other, US-Russia relations were already in a rut, and getting worse and worse.

At the same time, the situation was much more favorable during Trump's first term in office, especially as there were no military actions on the scale we are seeing now. Nevertheless, he wasn't able to put the relationship back on a constructive track.

Comment:
1) It is possible that the article is a little disappointing for people in the US who these days are enveloped in election talks 24/7. For an American voter it may not be insignificant whether a distinction is made between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, irrespective of whether they vote, and if they do, whether that vote is counted. The presence of Trump on the stage, and still standing, probably offers those who follow the news and opportunity to understand more about our world. Whether the opportunity is made use of or not it up to them but it is there, and it is different from having had Nicky Haley and Kamala Harris as the two contenders.

2) The author could also have mentioned the Minsk agreements as a missed opportunity while Trump was US President. US was not a part of this agreement, but the Trump's administration did little to help it along, the preparation for the conflict we have today continued during the Trump presidency, as intended during the days of the previous US president, Barack Obama, under whom we had the Maidan coup in 2014. For this reason, giving Biden the credit as reported in this article: 13 Aug, 2024 04:22 'Stupid' Biden threats caused Ukraine conflict - Trump - is not the whole story. Trump might think he can do better this time: 13 Aug, 2024 08:03 Trump outlines hopes for relations with Putin but Trump still needs to become president, and before that there is time to make the conflict deeper and more difficult to get out of. Officials in Kiev reportedly believe easing restrictions on the use of ATACMS missiles could give them leverage in talks with Moscow
[...]

As fighting continues in the region, an aide to Vladimir Zelensky told the Washington Post on condition of anonymity that Ukrainian officials have requested US approval to conduct strikes using ATACMS - which have a range of up to 300km - to target Russian airfields. The paper noted that this decision "could allow Kiev to hold a portion of Kursk (Region) for some time."

"This will give them the leverage they need for negotiations with Russia — this is what it's all about," the adviser added, echoing an earlier statement made by Mikhail Podoliak, another senior Zelensky aide.

In late May, the US allowed Ukraine to use American-made weapons to hit targets deep inside Russia in response to Moscow's advance in Ukraine's Kharkov Region, which sought to protect civilians from Kiev's recurring artillery strikes. Media reports suggested that the range of Ukrainian strikes was limited to about 100km, meaning that some high-priority targets such as airfields remained beyond Kiev's reach. Ukraine has repeatedly asked the US to lift those restrictions.

Meanwhile, the Post noted that the Kursk incursion comes as Ukrainian officials "have expressed some sense of urgency" to improve their military position before the November presidential elections in the US, amid concerns that Republican candidate Donald Trump could win the vote. The latter has repeatedly vowed to end the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours if elected, while criticizing military aid to Kiev.
3) Is someone in Ukraine genuinely worried about the spectre of a Trump presidency, or is it rather that someone in the US told someone in Ukraine to mention Trump when asking for weapons because "concern" may help grease the squeaky wheels of the Democratic election machine and facilitate the request for military assistance in the right places? Whatever the situation might be, we now read: 15 Aug, 2024 20:10

If Trump becomes president, can he prove them wrong?

6) There is also Israel and its influence over the US. From an Israeli perspective, it would not be in its interest to have a lot of nations in Europe who oppose what Israel does in Gaza. Zelensky gave initial order for Nord Stream attack - WSJ

Vladimir Zelensky approved a Ukrainian plan to sabotage the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, before trying to call off the operation under US pressure, but it was too late to do so, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing people allegedly involved in the plot.

The energy infrastructure, built to deliver Russian gas to Germany and the rest of Europe, was ruptured by blasts under the Baltic Sea in September 2022.

Early the following year, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh reported that explosives were planted on the Nord Stream pipelines by US Navy divers under the cover of a NATO exercise, and detonated on orders from US President Joe Biden. Top officials in Moscow, including President Vladimir Putin, have also pointed the finger at Washington, arguing that it stood to gain the most from the disruption of Russian gas supplies to the EU.

In its article on Wednesday, the WSJ pointed to another version of events, according to which the pipelines were targeted by the Ukrainians. It was first reported by the Western media shortly after the publication of Hersh's article.

According to the outlet's sources, the idea of blowing up Nord Stream was conceived by "a handful of senior Ukrainian military officers and businessmen" as they gathered for drinks in May 2022, a few months after the outbreak of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. The plotters believed that it would reduce Russia's energy revenues and make the EU less dependent on Moscow.

While Israel increasingly isolates itself on the international stage, BRICS members Iran, Russia, and China are quietly coordinating a full-spectrum effort to support Palestine diplomatically and militarily.

The Global Majority is fully aware that the genocidals in Tel Aviv are trying as hard as they can to provoke an apocalyptic war - with full US military support, of course.

Contrast that combative mindset with 2,500 years of Persian diplomacy. Iran's acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, has recently remarked how Tehran is trying hard to prevent "the Israeli regime's 'dream' of triggering an all-out regional war."

But one should never interrupt the enemy when he is in total panic. Sun Tzu would have approved this maxim. Iran certainly won't interfere as the US and G7 members pull out all stops to come up with some semblance of a Gaza ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel to prevent a serious military retaliation by Iran and the Axis of Resistance.

US lying about involvement in Kursk attack - Putin aide

Western intelligence services helped Ukraine plan the raid, Nikolay Patrushev has insisted

Kiev would never have staged an operation such as its incursion into Russia's Kursk Region without US and NATO support, former Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev has insisted, accusing the US of playing a role in the attack.

Last week, Ukraine launched its largest attack on Russian territory since the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022. Western officials have voiced their support for the incursion into Kursk Region but denied any prior knowledge of the operation.

"The US leadership's claims of non-involvement in Kiev's actions in Kursk Region do not correspond to reality... Without their participation and direct support, Kiev would not have ventured into Russian territory," Patrushev told Izvestia in an interview published on Friday.

A high-level commission has ordered the measure in Belgorod following Ukraine's cross-border incursion

A federal emergency has been declared in Russia's Belgorod Region amid a cross-border incursion by Ukrainian forces, the Emergencies Ministry in Moscow has announced.

Last week, Kiev launched its largest attack on Russian territory since the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022. The incursion focused on Kursk Region, where Ukrainian troops still hold a number of settlements and where a federal emergency was declared on Friday.

West knew about Ukraine's Kursk incursion plan - Zelensky aide
Kiev's key supporters, including the US, have denied prior knowledge of the attack on Russian territory

Kiev discussed its plan to launch a cross-border attack into Russia with its Western backers, a top adviser to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has admitted.

Western officials have said they supported last week's incursion into Kursk Region, but have denied any prior knowledge of the operation.

However, Zelensky aide Mikhail Podoliak has told The Independent that these disclaimers were not accurate, the British online newspaper reported on Thursday.

"There are certain things that have to be done with the element of surprise, and that have to happen on a local level," he was quoted as saying. "But there were discussions between partner forces, just not on the public level."

The Ukrainian official reiterated the explanations of the motives behind the operation that he previously offered on national television, stating that Kiev's objective is to use military "coercion" against the Russian public.

"When the war proceeds into the territory of Russia, they are certainly scared. They are shocked. This has a significant impact on the psychological state of Russia," he said.

Russian officials have said that by attacking civilians in Kursk Region Kiev had killed any chance for peace talks - an objective that their Ukrainian counterparts claim the incursion brings closer.

Podoliak urged the British government to permit Kiev to strike Russian territory with the long-range Storm Shadow missiles London has donated. If such attacks happen, "Russia would understand the cost of war is too high," he told The Independent.

According to British media, London allows Ukrainian troops to use any of weapons it sends to them on Russian soil, with the exception of the cruise missiles, which the UK manufactures jointly with France.

Moscow has warned that if any Western weapons are used for strikes deep inside Russia, it would share similar capabilities with parties elsewhere in the world that would use them against Western military assets.

Moscow considers Kiev's military tactics in Russia to be "terrorist." Western nations arming Kiev share responsibility for atrocities committed by Ukrainian troops, officials have said.
The above comes after slow coming acknowledgements from many governments who perhaps are on holiday. The reality might be that the move into Russia was organized with NATO and not the civilian administrations.

Finland and Estonia have joined Poland in hailing the incursion into Kursk Region

The prime ministers of Finland and Estonia have voiced their support for the Ukrainian attack on Russia's Kursk Region. The comments from the respective Russian neighbors come after EU foreign policy head Josep Borrell and US President Joe Biden also backed the raid.

Kiev sent several thousand troops across the Russian border last week. They have seized a dozen or so villages and indiscriminately targeted civilians, according to Moscow.

"Ukraine has the right to self-defense and it's clear that they can do their operation in Kursk," Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told reporters in Helsinki on Wednesday, at the joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart Kristen Michal.

"We fully support Ukraine in its different operations and personally I wish them luck," Michal said.

Earlier in the day, Polish PM Donald Tusk said that Kiev has "every right to wage war in such a way as to paralyze Russia in its aggressive intentions as effectively as possible." He also claimed that Russian actions have "the hallmarks of genocide."

Most Western leaders declined to comment on Ukraine's assault as late as Monday, choosing instead to make general statements endorsing "self defense" on part of Kiev. They also claimed to lack any knowledge of the Ukrainian offensive in advance.

On Tuesday, however, the US president suggested that Washington had been in touch with Kiev throughout.

"I have spoken with my staff on a regular basis, probably every four or five hours for the last six or eight days," Biden told reporters in New Orleans. "And we've been in direct contact, constant contact with the Ukrainians."

Meanwhile, EU foreign policy commissioner Josep Borrell said that Kiev had the bloc's "full support" for the Kursk offensive.

Ukrainian troops interviewed by Western outlets have admitted that the incursion's primary objective was to capture some territory that could be traded with Moscow in eventual peace talks, while relieving pressure on Pokrovsk, Chasov Yar and New York in the Donbass.

However, the attack appears to have weakened Ukrainian positions in Donetsk People's Republic, as Russian troops began to advance more swiftly. The Kursk incursion also resulted in an increase in Russian enlistments, according to President Vladimir Putin.
