Man behind Trump dossier meets with Senate investigators

The former British spy who put together an unverified dossier of explosive allegations about President Trump during last year's campaign has been ordered to give a deposition in a multi-million-dollar libel case brought against a media outlet that published the document.

Former MI-6 British Intelligence Officer Christopher Steele is fighting the decision by U.S. District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro, of the Southern District of Florida that he must answer questions in the suit against BuzzFeed. A lawyer directly involved in the case said the issue will likely be argued before the British courts where a similar libel case is being heard.

Steele's London-based company, Orbis Business Intelligence, authored the 35-page dossier while working for American-based Fusion GPS and its founder Glenn Simpson. The document, which was crafted as opposition research for unknown political rivals of Trump, contained salacious charges involving Trump and Russian prostitutes, but none of the claims have been corroborated and most media outlets steered clear of the dossier.

In January, BuzzFeed set off an international firestorm when it chose to publish the entire dossier, which also included seamy allegations involving Russian technology guru Aleksej Gubarev and his companies, XBT Holdings and Webzilla.

Stock Down

How Trump is going to be blamed for the next financial crash

Donald Trump
On Wednesday there were a lot of Trump fans who were celebrating the latest progress in the stock market. For the first time in over 100 years, the DOW gained 4,000 points over the course of 200 working days. That's 4,000 points since Trump was elected, so it's easy to draw a connection between the stock market's dizzying new heights and Trump's ascent to the White House.

But Trump's supporters shouldn't really celebrate that, because there's no way that this can last. It's been pointed out many times before that Trump is being set up for the inevitable crash of our economy. The elites simply can't wait to pull the plug on the many financial bubbles that are haunting our economy. If they do it now, they'll walk away with a lot of money while Trump is left with all the blame, since he took so much credit for the stock market's remarkable performance.

Of course, a financial crash won't look so bad for Trump if it comes out of nowhere. What the elites really need is a financial crash that can be easily pinned on the President, and it appears that they may finally have it. You may recall that Trump recently said that he will veto the next spending bill that's due in September, if the Senate and Congress don't include funding for his border wall. He basically threatened to cause a government shutdown if the Democrats don't cooperate with him.

China's 'soft' and 'hard' power of naval diplomacy

China's naval hospital ship Peace Ark is currently on its sixth "harmonious mission" to a number of developing countries, providing free medical services to its citizens. A Russian political analyst explains to Sputnik China why this year's mission is receiving particular attention.

This year, Peace Ark will visit eight countries during its 150-day journey. However two particular stops of the hospital vessel make this mission different to the previous trips: Sri Lanka and Djibouti are its two important stops along China's 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Besides, on August 1, the Chinese military inaugurated its first overseas naval facility in Djibouti.

"It is highly possible that the Peace Ark will not berth at the military facility, as the docks have yet to be built. And that makes more sense, given the mission's purpose is for the ship to be easily accessed by the local population at a civilian port. Nevertheless, sending the Peace Ark less than a month after the inauguration sends the unmistakable signal that the PLA (People's Liberation Army) Navy's presence in Djibouti is about making positive contributions to the world," Mathieu Ducastel, deputy director of the Asia and China program at the European Council on Foreign Relations wrote in his article for South China Morning Post.

Afghan Ambassador to Moscow Abdul Qayyum Kochai said Saturday that Kabul wants Russia's assistance in restoring peace in the war-torn country, not that of the United States and other Western nations.

Kochai stressed Afghans want the relations with Russia to be "very good," despite the problems that stood in between the two nations throughout the history.

Speaking on the security situation in Afghanistan and Washington's new strategy in the country, the ambassador said that state forces are capable of combating the terrorist groups Daesh and Taliban (both banned in Russia) without help of the United States.

"We wanted the US troops and troops of other Western countries, which have close relations with Afghanistan, to leave Afghanistan long ago," Kochai stressed. "We have now very powerful troops. They fight against terrorism, against Taliban, against Daesh. We can do this."

US airlifts ISIS fighters from Deir ez-Zor to safety claims war monitor

helicopter pilot
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that on Thursday morning the United States airlifted a number of ISIS fighters from the city of Deir Ez-Zor in Syria's east to safety.

The Observatory claimed that two US helicopters were used to extract four ISIS fighters and a civilian from a house used as an arms depot in the city's Beqres suburb.

Of the five people extracted, besides the local civilian, the others was a foreign bomb expert and three Egyptian jihadists. The Observatory also went onto explain that the US troops also destroyed the arms depot. It was also reported that shaved hair belonging to the extracted people was found in the vicinity.

The Syrian Army is rapidly making progress from expelling ISIS in central Syria before they focus on completely liberating the city of Deir Ez-Zor.

Sebastian Gorka is no longer a deputy assistant on counterterrorism to President Donald Trump. Gorka reportedly resigned over concerns that staffers who truly wanted to "make America great again" were being "undermined" amid infighting in the White House.

On Friday, Deputy Assistant Sebastian Gorka resigned his position at the White House. Gorka wrote a resignation letter explaining disagreements with his colleagues in the Trump administration.

"[G]iven recent events, it is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are - for now - ascendant within the White House," Gorka wrote, the Federalist reported. "As a result, the best and most effective way I can support you, Mr. President, is from outside the People's House."

Gorka's main duties at the White House included serving as a counterterrorism advisor to Trump and supporting the drafting of a new long-term national security strategy. However, Gorka reportedly had problems obtaining a security clearance, according to The Hill.

In its first missiles launch since the dramatic escalation of tension between Pyongyang and Washington, North Korea test-fired three short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan. It comes a day after Pyongyang lashed out at the ongoing US-South Korean military drills.

The missiles were launched from Kittaeryong, in North Korea's eastern Kangwon province. According to US Pacific Command spokesman Commander David Benham, two of the missiles fell into the water, while a third blew up at the launch pad.

"Initial assessment indicates three short-range ballistic missile launches. The first and third missiles at 11:49am and 12:19pm failed in flight," Benham said in a statement, as quoted by ABC. "The second missile launch at 12:07pm appears to have blown up almost immediately."

THE NEW NWO AND RUSSIA
. This is very much worth reading. The authors argue that in the coming (well, already here) rivalry between the American maritime power and the Chinese land power, Russia is the swing player that can hand victory to one or the other: "So logic says that the US should be very nice to Russia and seek to establish some kind of military alliance". Well, logic's voice isn't loud enough for the US Congress to hear. Also interesting is their discussion of Germany's choices and the important role Saudi Arabia could play if it changes protectors again. (I too wondered this two years ago.)

PUTIN'S POPULARITY. Some Western academics asked "But is his popularity real, or are respondents lying to pollsters?" and concluded "Putin's approval ratings largely reflect the attitudes of Russian citizens." I didn't bother to read their paper because I know - as does any serious observer - the answer already. Of course he's popular: he is the leader of a team which has achieved a tremendous turnaround in Russia's situation. Since 2000 all indicators are up. I wish we could say the same in our part of the world.

RUSSIA INC. GDP grew 2.5% year-on-year in the second quarter; this is the highest growth since 2013. PMI is up to 52.7. Inflation is the lowest in five years.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte admits he underestimated the drug problem and reiterated orders for law enforcement to "destroy" criminals dealing narcotics.

Speaking at the opening of a solar energy facility on Wednesday, Duterte said he made a mistake in promising during his election campaign that he could eradicate drugs within a matter of months.

The president, who has outraged human rights groups over extrajudicial deaths during his one year in office, said the recent killing of a student by police was "really bad" and will be investigated.

Kian Delos Santos was killed during a police raid in Caloocan City on August 18.
