The real Zelensky: From celebrity populist to unpopular Pinochet-style neoliberal - Interview

Zelensky
© UnknownUkraine President Volodymyr Zelensky
Ukrainian academic Olga Baysha details Volodymyr Zelensky's embrace of widely loathed neoliberal policies, his repression of rivals, and how his actions fueled the current war with Russia.

A comedic actor who rose to the country's highest office in 2019, Volodymyr Zelensky was virtually unknown to the average American, except perhaps as a bit player in the Trump impeachment theater. But when Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Zelensky was suddenly transformed to an A-list celebrity in US media. American news consumers were bombarded with images of a man who appeared overcome by the tragic events, possibly in over his head, but ultimately sympathetic. It didn't take long for that image to evolve into the khaki-clad, tireless hero governing over a scrappy little democracy and single-handedly staving off the barbarians of autocracy from the east.

But beyond that carefully crafted Western media image is something much more complicated and less flattering. Zelensky was elected by 73 percent of the vote on a promise to pursue peace while the rest of his platform was vague. On the eve of the invasion, however, his approval rating had sunk to 31 percent due to the pursuit of deeply unpopular policies.

Ukrainian academic, Olga Baysha, author of Democracy, Populism, and Neoliberalism in Ukraine: On the Fringes of the Virtual and the Real, has studied Zelensky's rise to power and how he has wielded that power since becoming president. In the interview below, Baysha discusses:
Zelensky's embrace of neoliberalism and increasing authoritarianism, how his actions contributed to the current war; his counterproductive and self-absorbed leadership throughout the war, the complex cultural and political views and identities of Ukrainians, the partnership between neoliberals and the radical right during and after Maidan, and whether a Russian takeover of the entire Donbass region might be less popular among the local population than it would have been in 2014.

Comment: An enlightening interview discussing the myths, means and motives, of the real Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Joe Biden and his administration have made an announcement that has many free speech advocates frightened, and it happened just days after Elon Musk purchased the Twitter platform in an effort to bring back free speech.

On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified that the administration has created a Disinformation Governance Board to fight online disinformation and said that it will be led by Undersecretary for Policy Rob Silvers and principal deputy general counsel Jennifer Gaskill, Fox News reported. He quipped to members of Congress:
"The goal is to bring the resources of the department together to address this threat. I just read a very interesting study that underscores the importance of the point that you make, the spread of mis- and disinformation in minority communities specifically, and we are focused on that in the context of our CP3 and other efforts, and I'd be pleased to share more."
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the administration supports the new board.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that security guarantees for his country should empower guarantor countries to make a decision within a day. During the last in-person meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Istanbul, Kiev had propose an international agreement along such lines.

Speaking to Polish journalists amid the ongoing Russian offensive in Ukraine, Zelensky said that guarantors would need to make decisions within hours rather than days or weeks, as any delay in providing emergency military assistance would cost lives. The Ukrainian leader described this relationship between casualties and delays by saying "hours equals people."

He explained that Ukraine now knows "what works on a battlefield and what doesn't," what should be done in various situations and what exactly is needed. Therefore, he explained, speedy decision making by Ukraine's guarantors would be a key factor.

Turkey to boycott NATO war games in Greece

Turkey will not participate in NATO drills amid escalating tensions with neighboring Greece, local media reported on Saturday, citing security sources. Ankara was scheduled to send its F-16 Fighting Falcon jets to the annual 'Tiger Meet' drill, which will be held at the Araxos Air Base in western Greece from May 9 to May 22.

According to reports, the Turkish Air Force Command considered that the wording used by Athens in technical documentation relating to the drills was contrary to international law and demanded that it be changed, but Greece refused to do so. A security source, as quoted by Sabah newspaper, claimed:
"Despite all of Turkey's attempts and conciliatory efforts, Greece, which could not tolerate even its neighbor's participation in an exercise in its country, moved the exercise away from the purpose of friendship and interoperability and tried to use it against Turkey's rights and interests."
As a result, on April 22, Turkey made a decision not to participate in the drills and informed the host country of its withdrawal, according to the reports.

Meanwhile, some sources suggest it was actually Greece that decided not to allow Turkey to participate in the NATO exercises in retaliation for regular violations of its airspace by Ankara's jets.

Frozen diplomatic talks with US may resume once goals of special operation are achieved - Moscow

© ReutersRussian and US state flags fly near a factory in Vsevolozhsk, Leningrad Region, Russia. Contacts between Moscow and Washington on the issue of strategic stability are formally 'frozen,' foreign ministry says.
The dialogue on strategic stability between Russia and the US may only resume after all the goals of Moscow's military operation in Ukraine are achieved, a high-ranking Russian diplomat has said.

"As of today, there's no use talking about any prospects for negotiations on strategic stability with the US," Vladimir Yermakov, who heads the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at Russia's Foreign Ministry, pointed out on Saturday.

"This dialogue is formally 'frozen' by the American side," he said, adding that Washington's moves concerning the matter "are being pointed in the complete opposite direction" than those of Moscow.

Get woke, go broke: Jill Biden biography by fawning AP reporters, sells just 250 copies in first week

jill biden book biography flop
© Washington Free Beacon
Covering the White House has 'become a bore' for journalists now that Trump is gone

The American people are decidedly disinclined to pay $26 for a book about the life of President Joe Biden's primary caretaker. Politico reports that a recently published biography of Dr. Jill Biden, Ed.D, sold just 250 copies in its first week of circulation.

The Politico article, which documents the professional anxiety of White House correspondents who find it "boring and difficult" to cover an administration whose policies they wholeheartedly support, cites the poor sales of Jill: A Biography of the First Lady by AP reporters Julie Pace and Darlene Superville as an example of why journalists are so bummed out now that a Democrat is in charge.

Comment: This little factoid, thankfully picked up by the Free Beacon, was buried eight paragraphs down in the Politico article, and dismissed in one sentence. The rest of the piece is liberal "journalists" whining about how Grandpa Earpiece doesn't make for scintillating copy. This when Biden, his family, and his administration are awash in juicy scandals and appalling foreign and domestic policy decisions. True journalism is dead in the U.S.

The process of propaganda: How Ukraine's 'Ghost of Kyiv' legend was born

How Ukraine's 'Ghost of Kyiv' legendary pilot was born

Ukraine's fighter pilots are vastly outnumbered by the Russians, and have become legendary - thanks in part to the story of an alleged flying ace called the "Ghost of Kyiv".

This hero is said to have downed as many as 40 enemy planes - an incredible feat in an arena where Russia controls the skies.

But now the Ukraine Air Force Command has warned on Facebook that the "Ghost of Kyiv is a superhero-legend whose character was created by Ukrainians!".

It's About Time

About Time
© Photo by Jiyeon Park on Unsplash
Isn't it always?

With the start of World War III by the United States "declaring" war against Russia by its actions in Ukraine, we have entered a time when the end of time has become very possible. I am speaking of nuclear annihilation.

I look down at my great-uncle's gold Elgin pocket watch from the 19th century. His name was John Patrick Whalen, an Irish immigrant to the US who fled England's colonialist created famine in Ireland.

It tells me it is 5:15 PM on April 21, 2022, a date, coincidentally, with a history.

No doubt John looked at his watch on this date in 1898 when the United States, after the USS Maine exploded from within in Havana harbor (a possible false flag attack), declared war on Spain in order to confiscate Spanish territories - Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. One colonial power replaced another and then proceeded over the long decades to wage war and slaughter these island peoples.

Imperialism never dies. It is timeless. One hundred and twenty-four years go by in a flash and it's still the same old story.

In 1898 the yellow press screamed Spanish devils and today it screams Russian devils. Then and now the press called for war. If the human race is still here in another 124 years, time and the corporate media will no doubt have told the same story - war and propaganda's lies to an insouciant and ignorant population too hypnotized by propaganda to oppose them.

This despite the apocalyptic sense that permeates our lives because of demonic technology and its use to transform humans into machines who can't think clearly enough to perceive reality and realize the threat posed by that quintessential technological invention - nuclear weapons.

Emails surface more evidence Hillary Clinton paid for anti-Trump disinformation operation

This fact highlights Democrats' outrageous exploitation of intelligence credentials and connections to launder slanders against a political enemy.

Evidence continues to mount that the Hillary Clinton campaign paid former MI6 agent Christopher Steele to launder fraudulent opposition research through U.S. intelligence agencies.

Newly published internal emails reveal that before Fusion GPS hired Steele on behalf of the Clinton campaign to dig up dirt on Donald Trump, the opposition-research firm began peddling several of the same Russia collusion lies that the former MI6 agent would later detail in the Steele dossier. This fact highlights a significant aspect of the Spygate scandal that deserves further focus and condemnation: Democrats' outrageous exploitation of intelligence credentials and connections to launder scurrilous accusations against a political enemy.

UK Foreign Secretary's militant rhetoric is another sign that post-Brexit Britain is dangerously delusional

Liz Truss
© Czarek Sokolowski / APBritain's Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss. The Foreign Secretary's campaign against China and Russia indicates that London has lost the plot.
A fanatical Neoconservative, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss presents world affairs in an uncompromising ideological struggle between "democracy" and "authoritarianism."

She also seems to be addicted to the fervour of Cold War.

Her address on Wednesday night in London bordered on showing desire for war against Russia and China simultaneously. By first calling to "push Russia out of the whole of Ukraine," Truss described the conflict as "our war," then proceeded to turn to China and taunt Beijing that its rise "was not inevitable." demanding that they "play by the rules" and even arguing that NATO should defend Taiwan in a potential contingency. Truss once again called for a "a network of liberty" and urged to avoid economic dependencies on undesirable countries (again a reference to Russia and China).

But, unfortunately for Truss and despite the climate we now exist in, none of this huffed-up rhetoric has any serious basis in reality. Yet, if she gets her way, the potential dangers are existential: The British Foreign Secretary's rhetoric is spoiling for direct conflict not just against one but two nuclear superpower adversaries. To try and oust Russia from Crimea and to prevent China from taking Taiwan if it moves to do so are both scenarios which could result in a military response, potentially even a nuclear one. This doesn't seem to faze Truss, and European leaders will probably not be happy with this, even if her masters in Washington will be delighted to hear it. However, it ultimately speaks to a wider truth that the hubris and nostalgic vigour of Brexit is driving Britain off a cliff edge, deposing its foreign policy of any kind of reason, restraint, moderation or realism about its current place in the world.
