Covid 'patient zero' was Wuhan lab worker infected in November 2019, US gov sources claim - really?

As next week's release of U.S. Government intelligence on Covid origins draws closer we're getting more leaks of information from it - perhaps deliberate trailers, perhaps officials unhappy about certain redactions.

Following the Sunday Times story sourced from "U.S. investigators" that COVID-19 was an escaped virus from Chinese bioweapon research, now a leak to journalists Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger purports to name the three Wuhan Institute of Virology researchers who were 'patient zero' - the first to be infected with the virus in November 2019. From Public:
Sources within the U.S. Government say that three of the earliest people to become infected with SARS-CoV-2 were Ben Hu, Yu Ping, and Yan Zhu. All were members of the Wuhan lab suspected to have leaked the pandemic virus.

As such, not only do we know there were WIV scientists who had developed COVID-19-like illnesses in November 2019, but also that they were working with the closest relatives of SARS-CoV-2, and inserting gain-of-function features unique to it.

When a source was asked how certain they were that these were the identities of the three WIV scientists who developed symptoms consistent with COVID-19 in the fall of 2019, we were told, "100%".
Alina Chan, a Harvard molecular biologist and coauthor with Matt Ridley of Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19, told Public: "Ben Hu is essentially the next Shi Zhengli. He was her star pupil. He had been making chimeric SARS-like viruses and testing these in humanised mice. If I had to guess who would be doing this risky virus research and most at risk of getting accidentally infected, it would be him."

Comment: Here's a link to Taibbi's background piece on the story he broke with Shellenberger. In it, he writes:
The implications of this are enormous and represent a major problem for the federal health bureaucracy, several intelligence agencies, and the news media, to say nothing of politicians in both parties (but particularly those on the Democratic side) who've deflected public interest from the Wuhan Institute and gain-of-function research. The secrets of both the pandemic's origin and the reason for America's at-best-sluggish investigation of same have become the mother of all political footballs, and today's news is likely to be just the first in a series of loud surprises.

The bulk of this investigation was done by Michael and the Publicteam, who've been digging into this matter with impressive ferocity for a while now. My part was more incidental, and I'm a bit hamstrung in talking about the nature of it, except to say that in addition to the material Michael dug up in today's article, numerous federal agencies appear to have designed their probes of Covid-19's origins so as to discount the possibility of lab origin in advance.

We were told, for instance, that despite longstanding interest in the Wuhan Institute as a potential security concern, at least one intelligence agency overruled a majority of its in-house investigators to produce a report on the pandemic's origin discounting the lab-leak hypothesis.

The "patient zero" report is likely to focus even more attention on stories by publications ranging from the Washington Post to the Intercept to the Wall Street Journal about U.S.-funded "gain-of-function" research, which sources insist is the likely reason many agencies (with the notable exception of the FBI and the Department of Energy, which both pointed at lab origin as a possible explanation) were steered away from the Wuhan Institute as a possible outbreak source.

By using its nuclear weapons, Russia could save humanity from a global catastrophe - Chairman of Russia's Council on Foreign and Defense Policy

Vladimir Putin and Sergey Karaganov
© EPA / SERGEI ZHUKOV ITAR-TASS POOLVladimir Putin and Sergey Karaganov during the president’s meeting with political experts in the Kremlin, September 2006. A tough but necessary decision would likely force the West to back off, enabling an earlier end to the Ukraine crisis and preventing it from expanding to other states.
This article has sparked major debate among experts in Russia about nuclear weapons, their role and the conditions of their use.

This is especially the case given Sergey Karaganov's status as a former presidential adviser to both Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, and his position as head of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, a noted Moscow think tank.

Some prominent figures have reacted with dismay, while others have been less critical.

RT has decided it would be beneficial for our readers to read it in full. The following piece has been translated and lightly edited.
Our country, and its leadership, seems to me to be facing a difficult choice. It is becoming increasingly clear that our clash with the West will not end even if we achieve a partial - let alone a crushing - victory in Ukraine.

Even if we completely liberate the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, it will be a minimal victory. A slightly greater success would be to liberate the whole of eastern and southern Ukraine within a year or two. But it would still leave part of the country with an even more embittered ultra-nationalist population pumped full of weapons - a bleeding wound that threatens inevitable complications, such as another war.

The situation could be worse if we liberate the whole of Ukraine at the cost of monstrous sacrifices and are left with ruins and a population that mostly hates us. It would take more than a decade to "re-educate" them.

Moscow outlines conditions for use of nuclear weapons

Zakharova

Russia could potentially resort to nuclear weapons only if its very existence were to be put at risk, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which is being attended by delegates from more than 100 countries, Zakharova reiterated that Moscow regards its nuclear weapons as a last-ditch defensive measure.

"Russia's nuclear deterrent policies are purely defensive in nature, and the hypothetical use of nuclear weapons is clearly limited to extraordinary circumstances," Zakharova said.

She explained that those could include an attack on Russia or its allies involving nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction, or "a conventional aggression that threatens the very existence of the state."

"This fundamental point remains unchanged," she stressed.

The spokeswoman went on to reiterate that "Russia is fully committed to the principle that a nuclear war should never be fought." "There could be no winners in it," she said, urging other nuclear countries to embrace this stance as well.

Zakharova's remarks come after last week Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow would start the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus in early July once all the required facilities are ready. Russia first announced plans to place such weapons in the neighboring country in March in response to the UK having decided to equip Ukraine with depleted-uranium shells.

Commenting on the matter on Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg denounced Russia's nuclear rhetoric as "reckless" and said that the US-led military bloc is closely monitoring the situation. However, he noted that "so far, we haven't seen any changes in the [Russian] nuclear posture that requires any changes in our posture."

Fears that Russia might use its vast nuclear arsenal amid the Ukraine conflict were rekindled in the West after late last year Putin signaled that Moscow would use "all the means available to us" to defend its people and territory. However, senior Russian officials have on numerous occasions insisted that Moscow is not threatening anyone with nuclear weapons.

West should target Russians like US treated Japanese in WW2 - Czech President

Petr Pavel

Russians living in the West should be closely monitored by security services, Czech President Petr Pavel has argued. He mentioned the treatment of ethnic Japanese by the US during World War II as an example of wartime security measures.

Pavel made his case in an interview with the US government-funded outlet Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on Thursday.

"When there is an ongoing war, the security measures related to Russian nationals should be stricter than in normal times," he said. "All Russians living in Western countries should be monitored much more than in the past."

Egypt is planning to drop the US dollar in bilateral trade with several member states of the BRICS group of emerging economies, Egyptian Supply Minister Ali Moselhy revealed on 12 June.

Cairo is specifically looking to use local currencies to pay for imports from India, China, and Russia - three members of the BRICS bloc, which also includes Brazil and South Africa.

"There are discussions so that we can trade in local currencies of countries like India, Russia, or China," Moselhy told Reuters on Monday after debunking reports that a credit line had been opened with India.

Ukraine currently has only one plan, which is a campaign to kill the maximum number of Russians, Mikhail Podoliak, an advisor to the chief of President Vladimir Zelensky's office, said on the air during a telemarathon on Thursday.

"There is only one plan: the most brutal advance with the maximum killing of Russians on this route," he said, noting that Kiev "can't just stop somewhere and say 'alright, let's think and talk about something now.'"

"The only possible scenario for Ukraine is to reach its 1991 borders," he said.

Asian central banks to ditch SWIFT, adopt Iran's alternative as de-dollarization accelerates

In the latest shot fired in the growing rebellion against US dollar dominance, the nine-nation Asian Clearing Union (ACU) has agreed to use Iran's financial messaging system as an alternative to the dollar-denominated SWIFT system that has long served as the globe's financial nervous system.

"The secretary general of the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) says Iran's financial messaging system SEPAM will replace SWIFT, a dollar-based international system, in trade exchanges between ACU members beginning next month," Iran's IRNA News Agency reported.

At a Tehran summit in May, ACU members agreed to establish a SWIFT alternative within a month. The adoption of Iran's SEPAM will be an interim measure, as the ACU will develop its own messaging system over the next several months.

Established in 1974, the ACU now comprises the central banks of India, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. Belarus and Mauritius applied for ACU membership at the May summit meeting.

Putin and what really matters in the chessboard

Putin Meeting Press
© Public Domain
President Putin's meeting with a group of Russian war correspondents and Telegram bloggers - including Filatov, Poddubny, Pegov from War Gonzo, Podolyaka, Gazdiev from RT - was an extraordinary exercise in freedom of the press.

There were among them seriously independent journalists who can be very critical of the way the Kremlin and the Ministry of Defense (MoD) are conducting what can be alternatively defined as a Special Military Operation (SMO); a counter-terror operation (CTO); or an "almost war" (according to some influential business circles in Moscow).

It's fascinating to see how these patriotic/independent journalists are now playing a role similar to the former political commissars in the USSR, all of them, in their own way, deeply committed to guiding Russian society towards draining the swamp, slowly but surely.

It's clear Putin not only understands their role but sometimes, "shock to the system-style", the system he presides actually implements the journalists' suggestions. As a foreign correspondent working all over the world for nearly 40 years now, I have been quite impressed by the way Russian journalists may enjoy a degree of freedom unimaginable in most latitudes of the collective West.

The Kremlin transcript of the meeting shows Putin definitely not inclined to beat around the bush.

He admitted there are "operetta Generals" in the Army; that there was a shortage of drones, precision munitions and communication equipment, now being addressed.

He discussed the legality of mercenary outfits; the necessity of sooner or later installing a "buffer zone" to protect Russian citizens from systematic Kiev regime shelling; and he stressed that Russia will not answer Bandera-inspired terrorism with terrorism.

After examining the exchanges, a conclusion is imperative: Russian war media is not staging an offensive even as the collective West attacks Russia 24/7 with its massive NGO/soft power media apparatus. Moscow is not - yet? - fully engaged in the trenches of information warfare; as it stands Russian media is only playing defense.

Ukraine spooks wanted to spy on Aaron Maté: Guess whose brother handled the request at Twitter?

The half-brother of US Ukraine warhawk Victoria Nuland was responsible for "Information Operations" at Twitter when the FBI and Ukrainian secret service SBU asked to censor 163 critical journalists and media outlets 2022, including Canadian journalist Aaron Maté. William Nuland was communicating with his half-sister as early as the beginnings of the Russia hoax 2016, Gateway Pundit can reveal.

"In March 2022, an FBI Special Agent sent Twitter a list of accounts on behalf of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Ukraine's main intelligence agency," Aaron Maté reported on his Substack. The accounts "are suspected by the SBU in spreading fear and disinformation", FBI FBI Special Agent Aleksandr Kobzanets, Assistant Legal Attaché at the US Embassy in Kiev, wrote to former Twitter "Trust and Saftey" head Yoel Roth on March 27, 2022.

Kobzanets attached an SBU list of 163 twitter accounts "used to disseminate disinformation and fake news to inaccurately reflect events in Ukraine, justify war crimes of the Russian authorities on the territory of the Ukrainian state in violation of international law." The list included mainstream Russian media outlets such as Russia Today, TASS, Izevestia and Komsomolskaya Pravda, but also the account of Canadian journalist Aaron Maté of The Grayzone.

NATO's Luftwaffe more than an echo of Nazi Operation Barbarossa

German Luftwaffe
© Public Domain
The NATO military alliance holds its largest-ever air force maneuvers since the bloc was formed 74 years ago. From June 12-23, the German Luftwaffe will lead the massive mobilization across the Baltic territories and Central Europe in an undisguised provocation to Russia.

The United States will deploy the most warplanes out of the 25 participating NATO partners. But Germany is the lead nation for the drills.

What's even more provocative, the date for the so-called Air Defender 23 exercises falls on the 82nd anniversary of Operation Barbarossa. On June 21, 1941, Nazi Germany and its Axis allies launched the biggest military invasion in history, against the Soviet Union. That invasion turned out to be a military disaster for Germany, heralding its historic defeat nearly four years later, along with horrific suffering and millions of deaths.

It's not just the dates that provide an uncannily grim echo. The sinister symbolism today of the German balkenkreuz (Teutonic cross) emblazoned on warplanes flying close to Russia's border is reinforced by the participation of many of the Third Reich's former Axis allies in the present day. Finland and the Baltic territories were the staging post for Hitler's master plan to conquer Russia and carry out its Final Solution of genocidal extermination.

Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, German Leopard tanks also bearing the balkenkreuz are today pounding Russian forces from Ukrainian territory, which also served as the invasion path for Operation Barbarossa. So far, many of these modern German tanks have been destroyed in today's battles, which does not bode well for NATO's sponsored Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Of course, Air Defender 23 pales by comparison of scale with 1941. NATO's warplanes flying in exercises over Germany and the Baltics number 250 with a total military personnel of 10,000 taking part. In Operation Barbarossa, the number of aircraft was at least 10-fold greater and involved up to 4 million ancillary soldiers. Nevertheless, the symbolism is conspicuous and staggering for anyone with a keen sense of history. Amazingly, no Western media have made any historical reference to Barbarossa, not even in brief passing. Then again, that's not that amazing when you consider the Western media's role is to propagandize this war against Russia.

The Object of War

bradley tanks destroyed ukraine
Objective achieved
For those who have followed my commentary on this war for any length of time, I beg you to excuse me for yet again returning to a topic that has been a recurring theme for me.

I feel compelled to do so both because of my frustration that it encapsulates a concept that still remains poorly understood, and more immediately because earlier today I came across a Twitter post wherein the following was stated:
"The Ukrainian Army has taken more territory since June 6th than Russia has since the start of this year."
I won't even bother to link to it, because it doesn't matter who said it and where. It is an expression that has been almost ubiquitous among Ukraine/NATO supporters in this war — including substantial numbers of supposed "military experts".

In essence, it is nothing more than what is commonly referred to as a "cope" — a delusion to which one appeals to "cope" with the cognitive dissonance induced by abundant contradictory indications.
