Sanders supporters: Ditch war whore Hillary, vote Jill Stein

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein arrives at a rally of Bernie Sanders's supporters on the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., July 26, 2016.
Soured by the Democratic Party's documented bias for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over rival Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator's supporters are considering the Green Party, which is holding its national convention this week in Houston.

The 2016 Green Party Presidential Nominating Convention in Houston, Texas, opened Thursday, August 4, and will run through the weekend. The party is expected to choose Massachusetts physician Jill Stein as its presidential nominee, along with her running mate, vice-presidential candidate Ajamu Baraka, a human rights activist. Stein was the party's presidential nominee in 2012.

The Green Party is poised for what could be an historic national election, as Greens are running in hundreds of campaigns across the US for offices as high as US senator. Stein has officially qualified to appear on the ballot in 23 states and the District of Columbia, and is expected to qualify in as many as 25 more states by the early-September filing deadline, according to Mark P. Jones, of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in Houston.

What chutzpah! Israeli officials left red-faced after Hezbollah tricks them into giving interviews for war documentary

The Lebanese Resistance has managed to trick three Israeli officials and a former Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldier into giving interviews for a documentary about the 2006 war, by telling them that it was for a BBC documentary.

The Israeli officials who were left red-faced by the documentary are the same ones who were considered as being responsible for the military failure in the 2006 war against Hezbollah.

The documentary was about the 33-day July 2006 war, which was widely considered across the Arab world as a victory of Arab over Israeli arms.

The Italian reporter who conducted the documentary — Michela Moni — interviewed former Defense Minister Amir Peretz, former Foreign Minister Tipi Livni, and Major General MK Eyal Ben-Reuven, as well as former IDF soldier Tomer Weinberg. Moni told all three officials that the documentary was to be aired on BBC News.

Unbeknownst to the Israeli officials, and Moni himself, the interviews were broadcast Saturday on the pro-Hezbollah television channel, Al Mayadeen. Moni has said that he had no idea the documentaries were being used for Al-Mayadeen:

Like attracts like: Former CIA head endorses Clinton - only she will keep the global slaughter going strong

Michael Morell

War criminals, torturers and spooks agree: Hillary is our man!
Michael Morell, the former head of the CIA, endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and said that Donald Trump was an "unwitting agent" of Russia. Twitter exploded with reactions listing all the vices and virtues of the agency and Clinton.

In a New York Times opinion piece published Friday, Morrell, who was acting director the CIA in 2011 and again 2012 to 2013, said that he had previously been silent on who he was voting for throughout his tenure at the agency and had never been registered as a Democrat or a Republican.

"No longer," he wrote. "On Nov. 8, I will vote for Hillary Clinton. Between now and then, I will do everything I can to ensure that she is elected as our 45th president."

His reasoning is twofold: he believes that Clinton is qualified to be commander-in-chief and believes that Trump might pose a threat to national security.

"I also saw the secretary's commitment to our nation's security; her belief that America is an exceptional nation that must lead in the world for the country to remain secure and prosperous; her understanding that diplomacy can be effective only if the country is perceived as willing and able to use force if necessary; and, most important, her capacity to make the most difficult decision of all - whether to put young American women and men in harm's way," Morell wrote.

Comment: So Clinton is committed to making sure the Empire remains the most belligerent, oppressive, self-righteous and self-gratifying nation on earth. If that doesn't make voters flock to Killary the Butcher, we don't know what will.

Chinese fighter jets made a patrol flight over the disputed Spratly Islands, also known as the Nansha Islands, in the South China Sea, Chinese Defense Ministry's spokesman Shen Jinke said on Saturday.

"A group of Chinese jets, including a H-6 bomber, a SU-30 fighter and other military aircraft, made a patrol flight in the airspace above the Nansha Islands," Shen said in a statement, adding that the group also included tanker and AEW&C planes.

According to the Chinese military official, the aim of the mission was to improve air supremacy and defense tactics.

Japan summoned Chinese diplomats on Saturday to protests against some 230 Chinese ships' approaching the disputed Senkaku islands (Diaoyudao Islands) in the East China Sea.

"This is a unilateral act that raises tensions ... and it is unacceptable to us," Kenji Kanasugi, the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau director-general, told the Chinese Embassy in Japan, as quoted by the Kyodo News.

About 230 Chinese fishing boats reportedly approached the disputed islands accompanied by six China Coast Guard vessels late on Friday. Some of the Coast Guard vessels were allegedly equipped with guns.

Ukrainian MP demands Kiev provide proof of Russian troops in country's east

For over two years, Ukrainian authorities have been making claims of a Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine involving thousands of regular troops. Now, a sensible voice in Ukraine's own parliament is asking authorities to provide evidence for the oft-repeated claims.

In April 2014, a couple months following a coup d'état which toppled Ukraine's former government, Kiev launched a military operation against rebellious residents in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, the latter angry over the putsch and fearful of the new authorities' threats against the country's Russian minority.

The military operation has left large areas of these regions destroyed, thousands dead and over two million people displaced. From the start, the government in Kiev has accused Russia not only of supporting the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk republics, but of intervening directly using the regular Russian army.

Facepalm: Belgian jihadist freed after just 4 months of 15-year sentence due to "bureaucratic mess"

Fatima Aberkan, dubbed the 'Belgian muse of ISIS', who was jailed to 15 years on terrorism charges, has been released due to a bureaucratic mess, while her only restrictions are she is not allowed to visit the Molenbeek district or view jihadi websites.

Aberkan, 55, also known within the Belgian media as the "Mother of jihad", was sentenced to 15 years in prison on terrorism charges in April.

The court proved that she had been in contact with Nizar Trabelsi, a Tunisian jihadist, who was convicted on charges of being associated with Al-Qaeda and plotting attacks on US targets, including the Kleine Brogel Air Base in Belgium.

She was also accused of having contacts with Malika El Aroud, a Belgian jihadist who was convicted in 2010 on terrorism charges, the court added.

The prosecutors also linked Aberkan with jihadi recruiter Khalid Zerkani, who is nicknamed 'Santa Claus of jihad'. Zerkani was charged with recruiting young Muslims back in 2015 and is now serving 12 years in jail.

Comment: How many times have we heard a similar story? "Known to police/intelligence" but seemingly ignored. Previous arrests, ties to 'known' terrorists... Could it be because the state actually wants the crazies running free? Just like the far-right Gladio networks of the Cold War, jihadis are well-suited to keep the "strategy of tension" up and running. And all the state has to do is claim total incompetence, after which the public begs to give them more power in order to become less incompetent.

Kiev rejects appointment of Russia's new ambassador to Ukraine

Putin Mikhail Babich

Putin on a trip with Mikhail Babich (far right) to Nizhegorodsk oblast, Russia in March 2016
Russian action suggests Moscow has given up hope of Kiev ever agreeing to appointment of a Russian ambassador to replace the sacked Mikhail Zurabov.

When discussing a few days ago the dismissal of Mikhail Zurabov, Russia's ambassador to Ukraine, I expressed bafflement that despite his obvious incompetence Zurabov had been left in such a crucial post for so long.

Here is what I said:
"That it has taken the Russian government this long to sack Zurabov is astonishing. Most Russians would doubtless say that it is because Zurabov has high level patrons within the Russian power structure."
The reason why Zurabov remained in post for so long has now been made clear, and it has nothing to do with his having any "high level patrons in the Russian power structure". Quite simply there was no guarantee the Ukrainians would agree to the appointment of any more capable successor.

Demolishing the myth of the "moderate rebel" in Syria

ISIS, Daesh, terrorist
Given the insistence by militant Jihadists in Syria of imposing their own extremist version of Sharia law, co-existence between them and so-called "moderates" is actually impossible.

On the subject of the Syrian war there has been much deserved mockery of the name change by Jabhat Al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda's local Syrian branch, to its new name: "Jabhat Fateh al-Sham". It has been rightly pointed out that this name change, and the organisation's attempt to distance itself from its Al-Qaeda parent, is a transparent fraud made all the more obvious by the fact that Ayman Al-Zawahiri, Al-Qaeda's leader, has given it his blessing.

A point hardly anyone makes however is that these name changes and re-labellings of Jihadist groups in Syria go on all the time. Our contributor Afra'a Dagher - a Syrian writer who actually writes for The Duran from Syria - wrote about this phenomenon weeks ago on 17th May 2016, long before Jabhat Al-Nusra announced its latest name change:

The head of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic (LNR) Igor Plotnitsky has been injured after an explosion rocked his car. It is reported he is undergoing surgery due to the injuries he obtained.

The incident took place in the city of Lugansk, the capital of LNR on Saturday morning, the LNR People's Militia HQ told RIA Novosti, adding that two people were injured.

It is not clear at present whether the blast occurred inside the car or near the vehicle.

"Plotnitsky is in a grave condition and is undergoing an operation," a source told Interfax.

Comment: Further news from Fort Russ:

As the Lugansk publication Lits reports, the attempt was made in Lugansk at the intersection of Karpinsky and Vatutin streets. The car was blown up by a landmine. Several people were injured during the explosion and the facades of adjacent buildings were damaged.

As Russian Spring was reported earlier by the People's Militia of the LPR, the improvised explosive device was fixed on a pole which broke off during the explosion and landed near the road.
