Tony Blair's nose grows a meter at least

Author and journalist Matt Carr dissects what Tony Blair really meant by his speech this morning on "radical Islam."

Image
Hello World. I'm Tony Blair, the highest-paid speaker in the world and the Middle East "Peace Envoy" and I'd like to share my thoughts with you on how to combat the threat of "radical Islam."

Because this threat is very serious indeed. In fact it is "not abating. It is growing. It is spreading across the world. It is destabilising communities and even nations. It is undermining the possibility of peaceful co-existence in an era of globalisation."

As most of you know will know, I have courageously and tenaciously set out to combat these dark forces for many years now, with considerable success. And I would like to share my thoughts with you on what "we" can do to combat this menace:

Obama plays with fire in Ukraine under pressure from America's Neocon war hawks

The first of 600 US troops have arrived in Poland.
"The U.S. is sending about 600 ground troops to Eastern Europe ... to 'reassure' allies there as Washington resumes its campaign of pressure on Russia over the Ukraine standoff."
- POLITICO

How many American parents would proudly send their sons and daughters off to kill or be killed in Slovyansk or Donetsk? How many young men and women aspire to be the first American to fall in Kramatorsk?

Those towns are in eastern Ukraine. President Obama says the "military option" - war, that is - is not on the table in his effort to oppose Russia in the Ukraine crisis, but can we trust him? As pressure mounts on him from America's war hawks, what will he do when sanctions fail to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to acquiesce? Will the military option then find its way onto that infamous table?

Self-defence troops have confirmed they attacked a Ukrainian military helicopter at an airfield in eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. A plume of smoke can be seen rising over the area in a number of online videos.

"Our people approached the airfield, shot a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) in the direction of the helicopter. There was an explosion. [Kiev] militants started shooting and we [protesters] retreated," a representative from the Kramatorsk self-defence troops told RIA Novosti.

А video posted online shows a loud explosion at the site where a plume of smoke is seen. The smoke was swiftly followed by another explosion. Witnesses say fire was also seen in the area of the blast.

The Mark of the Beast: Scientist claims human microchip implants will become "not optional"

And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.…

Revelations 13:16-17
Technologies designed specifically to track and monitor human beings have been in development for at least two decades.

In the virtual realm, software programs are now capable of watching us in real time, going so far as to make predictions about our future behaviors and sending alerts to the appropriate monitoring station depending on how a computer algorithm flags your activities. That is in and of itself a scary proposition.

What may be even scarier, however, is what's happening in the physical realm. According to researches working on human-embedded microchips it's only a matter of time before these systems achieve widespread acceptance.

Russia no longer answering the phone when the US calls

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been unable to get Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the phone amid escalating tension near the country's shared border with Ukraine.

Mr. Shoigu announced Thursday that Russia planned to engage in a new series of military exercises near the Ukraine border. The military move, he said, is in response to ongoing NATO training exercises in Poland and the death of at least two pro-Russia insurgents in eastern Ukraine.

Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters Friday that Mr. Hagel has been trying to communicate with Russian officials but has yet to hear back from Mr. Shoigu or anyone else. Pentagon officials have reached out to Russia on Mr. Hagel's behalf within the past 24 hours, according to Col. Warren.

"We have made it clear to the Russians that Secretary Hagel is available for a phone call at any time," he said. "We have reached out to them and made it very to them that he is willing to speak to his counterpart there at any time."

Psychopath Hillary Clinton: Hero Edward Snowden's leaks 'helped terrorists'

Speaking at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday night, Hillary Clinton made a restrained but nonetheless damning attack against Edward Snowden.

At the event, an interviewer asked Clinton whether she thought the former National Security Agency contractor's disclosures about its domestic spying programs had any positive effects on American security policy or public discourse.

Without ever explicitly mentioning the NSA's spying programs, Clinton justified their utility in protecting the U.S. from another terrorist attack in the wake of 9/11.

More self foot-shooting: American financial rating company cuts Russia's credit rating to step above 'junk'

For the first time in five years Standard & Poor's has cut Russia's credit rating to 'BBB-', just above junk status. It warns the tension in Ukraine and 'significant' capital outflow could mean another downgrade. Moscow says it is "politically motivated."

"In our view, the tense geopolitical situation between Russia and Ukraine could see additional significant outflows of both foreign and domestic capital from the Russian economy and hence further undermine already weakening growth prospects," the ratings agency warned.

The last time S&P downgraded Russia was in December 2008.

Comment: By any objective standards, the US$ and economy is complete junk - it's only America's threat of military action that keeps it artificially buoyed.

Ecuador expels U.S. military operatives

Ecuador President Rafael Correa
Ecuador has given a group of 20 US Defense Department employees until the end of the month to quit the country. President Rafael Correa had previously said the presence of the US military in Ecuador was "scandalous" and they had "infiltrated all sectors."

Ecuador has officially requested that all 20 Defense Department employees in the US Embassy in Quito cease their activities and leave the country by the end of the month, embassy spokesman Jeffrey Weinshenker confirmed to AP. He said the embassy had received a formal letter dated April 7, alerting them to the imminent expulsion of the group.

Previously, Correa attacked the US's military presence in the Latin American country, claiming there were even more operatives.

"There are about 50 of them. Who can justify this? We are now taking action accordingly," he said in January, pledging to have them removed from the country. He added that these operatives had infiltrated all sectors of the Ecuadorian political sphere, referring to their presence as "scandalous."

Right Sector leader Yarosh moves HQ from Kiev to Dnepropetrovsk, east Ukraine

Ukrainian radical neo-fascist Right Sector group has moved its main headquarters from Kiev to Dnepropetrovsk to "closely monitor" the developments in the east, its leader said, announcing the formation of yet another paramilitary squadron in Ukraine.

"I moved my headquarters to Dnepropetrovsk. The purpose is to prevent the spread of the Kremlin infection," Ukrainian presidential candidate and Right Sector leader Dmitry Yarosh announced at a press conference in Dnepropetrovsk.

He says the vital industrial city in Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk provides a better platform to observe the situation in Donbass where pro-federalization protests are flourishing, after the coup in Kiev.

Yarosh, placed by Russia on an international most wanted terrorist list, also announced that he started forming a special squad of fighters called "Donbass."

"We coordinate all of our actions with the leadership of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security service of Ukraine," Yarosh said.

Russia unexpectedly raises interest rates

Image
The Central Bank of Russia has unexpectedly raised its key interest rate to 7.5 percent, despite earlier saying it wouldn't change until June. Aimed at trimming inflation, it means more expensive loans and slows an economy that's already losing steam.

The rate went up 50 basis points. The last time it was bumped up was in March to 7 percent, a 1.5 rise from the previous 5.5 percent rate.

Bank Chair Elvira Nabiullina previously said the institution would refrain from changing rates until the June meeting.

On its website the Bank gave a traditional explanation, saying the move will help keep the necessary balance between inflation and economic growth.

"The adopted decision on the key rate would ensure a decline in inflation to no more than 6.0% by the end of 2014 and help to maintain the appropriate balance of inflation risks and the risks of further economic slowdown," it said in a statement.
