Russia opts to extend counter-sanctions against US, EU & allies through 2020 in response to EU

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law prolonging the embargo against Western countries that have imposed anti-Russia sanctions. Restrictions will be in force until the end of next year.

The document which was published on Russia's official portal of legal information, reads: "To extend from January 1 to December 31, 2020 the operation of certain special economic measures stipulated by the presidential decree of August 6, 2014.

Five years ago, the Kremlin banned imports of certain agricultural products, raw materials and foodstuffs from Western countries that target Russia with sanctions. They include the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia, Norway, Iceland, Albania, Montenegro, Liechtenstein, and Ukraine.

Comment: For a nation as resilient as Russia, the short-sighted imposition of sanctions by the US and its vassals became a spur to become even more self-reliant than they already were. The US has missed out on a developing market that used to be hungry for western goods, but no more. "Made in Russia" is now a source of national pride.

Jimmy Dore: CBS news analyst and Iran "war mongering maniac" also Raytheon board member

Jimmy Dore
How do you know the MSM is nothing more than the media wing of the military-industrial-complex? A Raytheon board member masquerading as an objective analyst is a good start.

On Friday, CBS News analyst and retired Navy Admiral James Winnefeld Jr. slammed President Trump for calling off retaliatory strikes on Iran over a downed US drone, while insisting we must strike Iran or else the United States will "lose a lot of credibility".

Trump called off the planned strikes Friday, tweeting that "we were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights," only to learn that 150 people would die in the bombardments. According to the New York Times, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton and CIA Director Gina Haspel were predictably hot-to-trot on military action. Instead, Trump announced that "major additional sanctions" were coming Iran's way and would be unveiled on Monday.

Comment: Filthy media war shills. As Dore says, "Now you know why they want to shut YouTube down and they want you to get your news from those pieces of it over at CBS News and NBC and ABC and CNN?"

Turkey's ruling AK party runner-up Binali Yildirim has congratulated his rival, Ekrem Imamoglu, on his victory in the rerun of Istanbul's mayoral election. The results of the initial vote in March were annulled over violations.

The former Turkish Prime Minister, who had received full backing from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the campaign, expressed hope that Imamoglu "would serve the city well."

Yildirim conceded defeat after it was reported that the opposition candidate, a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP) had 53.6 percent of the votes after nearly 95 percent of the ballots were counted.

WAPO alleges that Trump approved cyber strike to knock out Iran's missile launchers

President Donald Trump reportedly approved a cyber strike that disabled Iranian computer systems, after the country shot down an unmanned U.S. surveillance drone, according to a new report in Washington Post. The systems were used to operate missile launches.

The strike, carried out against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was launched Thursday but had been in the works for some time, according to the Post, which also noted that the Pentagon initially proposed launching the assault earlier this month after Iran's alleged attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

The operation was said to cripple Iranian military command and control systems but did not involve casualties. It was the first offensive show of force since the U.S. Cyber Command, part of the U.S. Department of Defense, was elevated to a full combatant command in May after being given new authority by the president.

Comment: Anonymous sources told the Associated Press a similar story - however, the Pentagon would not confirm the reports:
Trump secretly authorized U.S. Cyber Command to carry out a retaliatory cyberattack that disabled Revolutionary Guard systems that control rocket and missile launches, several officials told The Associated Press. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the operation.

The Pentagon declined to confirm the cyberattack reports: "As a matter of policy and for operational security, we do not discuss cyberspace operations, intelligence or planning," spokeswoman Heather Babb said in a statement.

The cyberattack was in retaliation for the drone as well as for recent attacks on oil tankers in the region, according to reports. Iran has denied involvement in the oil tanker attacks.

Don't fall for the ruse - The truth about Iran's nuclear program

Irans Nuclear Program
© Corbett Report
"Be afraid!" say the repeaters of mockingbird media. Afraid of who? Afraid of Iran, of course.

Oh, haven't you heard? The Iranian government's stockpile of enriched uranium is about to surpass 300 kilograms! And Iran's store of heavy water is about to surpass 130 metric tons! Don't you understand? This will exceed the limits on these materials set out in the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)! And the dastardly Iranian government is not only embarrassed by these actions, but openly taking steps to end (some of) their commitments under the JCPOA!

Sounds chilling, doesn't it? But there's one little disclaimer that seems missing from a lot of the MSM's scaremongering coverage of these developments: None of this has anything to do with an offensive nuclear weapons program.

Confused? Of course you are. The highly-technical details of the 159-page nuclear agreement were never meant to be scrutinized by (much less understood by) the average Joe Sixpack and Jane Soccermom. Words like "enriched" and "highly enriched," "heavy water" and "tritium," "nuclear program" and "nuclear weapons program" are thrown around by the media as if these terms are all the same, even though they describe fundamentally different materials and processes. And the whole point is to make the public afraid of a nuclear weapons program that both US and Israeli intelligence has confirmed doesn't exist.

So what's the real story on the Iran nuclear deal?

Netanyahu "pleased" as Trump announces "crippling" new sanctions on Iran

trump netanyahu
Earlier in the day, Trump announced that a military action against Tehran was still on the table after Iran downed a US drone. The statement follows a separate announcement from the president, in which he stated that another round of anti-Iran sanctions is expected to be implemented as a means of preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Trump tweeted that new sanctions against Iran would be imposed on 24 June.

"We are putting major additional Sanctions on Iran on Monday. I look forward to the day that Sanctions come off Iran, and they become a productive and prosperous nation again," he tweeted.

Comment: Netanyahu is reported to be "pleased" to hear Iran is under "crippling American sanctions" - which tells you a lot about the leader of Israel, and perhaps where the impetus for them is coming from:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed Washington's intentions to impose additional sanctions on Iran.

"Thanks to crippling American sanctions, Iran is facing unprecedented economic pressure as a result of its aggression. So I was pleased to hear President Trump make clear yesterday that pressure will continue and that pressure will increase", Netanyahu said during a joint press conference with US National Security Adviser John Bolton ahead of the security summit between the United States, Israel and Russia.

Benjamin Netanyahu tours the illegally occupied West Bank with John Bolton
Benjamin Netanyahu, who on Sunday toured the West Bank with John Bolton, said he will listen to US peace proposals - but added that "any future agreement" with Palestine must guarantee an Israeli presence in the Jordan Valley.

Footage posted on Sunday showed Israel's prime minister and the US national security adviser overlooking the Israeli-occupied area from an aircraft and on the ground, with Netanyahu seen giving Bolton an excursion.

Speaking English on camera standing next to Bolton, the PM rammed the message home that Israel will not be leaving the area under any deal, saying it ensures "the minimal strategic depth and strategic height for the defense of our country."

Comment: All the while the Palestinians have been rightly decrying the illegal occupation they have suffered under since 1967. They have plenty of reason to distrust the US.

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has added "gay and lesbian couples" to the growing list of groups for whom she would support reparations.

Citing a tax code that was "discriminatory" against non-heterosexual married couples, Warren tweeted Saturday, "It wasn't until marriage equality became law that gay & lesbian couples could jointly file tax returns-so they paid more in taxes. Our government owes them more than $50M for the years our discriminatory tax code left them out. We must right these wrongs."

Ethiopia's Amhara state chief killed amid regional coup attempt

ethiopia map
The president of Ethiopia's Amhara region and his top adviser were killed in an attempted coup in which the country's army chief was also shot dead, the office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.

Spokeswoman Billene Seyoum told journalists a "hit squad" led by Amhara's security chief Asaminew Tsige burst into a meeting in the state offices of Amhara's capital, Bahir Dar, on Saturday and shot regional government President Ambachew Mekonnen and his adviser Ezez Wassie.

The men were "gravely injured in the attack and later died of their wounds," she said.

"Several hours later, in what seems like a coordinated attack, the chief of the staff of the national security forces Seare Mekonnen was killed in his home by his bodyguard in Addis Ababa."

Also shot dead was a retired general who had been visiting him, Billene added.

The bodyguard has been apprehended while Asaminew is still on the loose, sources said.

Al Jazeera's Leah Harding, reporting from Addis Ababa, said Abiy called those responsible "mercenaries".

Rocky reception for dawn of $50-bn Trump Mideast plan - hardly an 'opportunity' in Palestine's view

kushner israel deal

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner reveals the economic plan to follow the undisclosed political part of the US-proposed Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.
A $50 billion plan for Palestine's economy that hinges on peace with Israel has been revealed by Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. He calls it the "opportunity of the century" but a chorus of Palestinian groups disagrees.

Speaking to Reuters on Saturday, Kushner dangled the multibillion proposal separately from the central - political - part of US President Trump's Israeli-Palestinian peace deal plan. He said he did so on purpose to let people "digest" the "less controversial" side of the plan before the political details finally land.

The interview, as well as the document shared by the White House, draw an optimistic picture of a million jobs created in the West Bank and Gaza and Palestine's GDP "doubled" in 10 years with the help of the specially created, multinationally-controlled fund. Donors would pour some $28 billion into the West Bank and Gaza, while further investment would go to Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon, where several million Palestinian refugees live.

Comment: Saad Nimr, professor of political science at Birzeit University disagreed telling RT:
"During Shimon Peres as a Prime Minister in Israel (1995-96), he tried that approach of talking economic ease to the Palestinians instead of talking about a political solution," but no results were achieved.

Nimr reminded of a World Bank report, which said that Palestine would earn $5.5 billion extra every year if it had access to the Mediterranean and Dead Sea, which is now blocked by Israel.

The plan is basically an ultimatum for Palestine, which may be coerced into accepting it due to the lack of other options, former US diplomat Jim Jatras told RT.
"This is depending on the assumption that Palestinians have no place to go. 'You don't like this deal? - great. Wait till the next one which is even worse for you. You don't like that? Wait till the next one, which will be even worse.'"
The Palestinians are rejecting the US plan because "the only purpose for the Americans is Israel's prosperity," Nimr said. Jatras agreed that Palestinians understand that it would be skewed in favor of Israel, with not only Israelis retaining settlements in the West Bank, but further expanding their control over land and water resources.

For years, the Arab countries were saying that they will only normalize relations with Israel after it withdraws from all land occupied in 1967, including the West bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and Jerusalem, Nimr explained.

Improving relations with the Arab states, especially those in the Gulf, had been Israel's goal for a long time. "They have a huge potential economically from the Israeli point of view. Now, the Israelis can imagine a huge market for their products; the investment; the money coming into Israel. All that would make Israel absolutely prosperous, while ending the issue of Palestine. It's a win-win for Israel, absolutely," he said.
Hanan Ashrawi, a member of PLO executive council and a negotiator, said economic measures will not solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Only a political solution will work.
"If they really care about the Palestinian economy they should start by lifting the siege of Gaza, stopping Israel stealing our money and our resources and our land and opening up our territorial waters, our air space and our borders so we can freely export and import," Ashrawi said, according to Reuters.

Ashrawi called for the US to exert pressure on Israel to end Tel Aviv's "occupation" of Palestinian territories, observing that the Trump team embarked on an "entirely wrong approach."

"They can end the occupation, which is the most basic requirement for prosperity. There can be no prosperity under occupation," she said.

Comments from Hamas representative Ismail Rudwan were more blunt. Rudwan asserted that Hamas rejects Kushner's plan in its entirety and will only accept if Israel, which Hamas considers an occupant, leaves Palestinian territories.

"We reject the 'deal of the century' and all its dimensions, the economic, the political and the security dimensions," Rudwan said.
"The issue of our Palestinian people is a nationalistic issue; it is the issue of a people who are seeking to be free from occupation. Palestine isn't for sale, and it is not an issue for bargaining. Palestine is a sacred land and there is no option for the occupation except to leave."
