Puppet Masters
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived on Thursday to observe the main part of the Vostok 2018 war games, in which Russian, Chinese, and Mongolian troops trained defensive and offensive operations. Scores of tanks, heavy artillery, missile systems and combat jets have been involved, as well as thousands of soldiers and officers.
President Putin also opened a grand parade at the Russian Army's Tsugol training range and praised the troops for their performance in the military exercise. He reiterated, however, that the display of military might is not directed against anyone, as Russia seeks "constructive partnership."
The troop review started with light armored jeeps carrying both Russian and Chinese flags through the parade grounds, followed by four fighter jets flying over the area.
The 1-hour "confidential, for internal use only" video was posted by Breitbart on Wednesday. It has gained traction online, and is cited by pro-Trump commentators as yet another proof of the Silicon Valley's bias towards conservatives.
It shows a meeting of the company's executives with rattled staff members shortly after the 2016 presidential election.
"Myself as an immigrant and a refugee, I certainly find this election deeply offensive and I know many of you do too," Google's co-founder Sergey Brin says in the opening minutes of the video, before admitting that "many people apparently don't share the values that we have."
Later in the conversation, Brin attempts to explain the inner motives that prompted Trump supporters to vote as they did. He argues that the boredom that stems from handling a "routine job" is what drove people to opt for the Republican candidate in the first place.
The US has struck Syria twice after claims of chemical weapons use by the government in Damascus, Haley said on Wednesday in a Fox News interview.
"Don't test us again," she said, addressing the Syrian government and its allies Russia and Iran.
Washington and its allies have also warned Syria that they will act not just in case of chemical weapons being used, but against any attack on the province, the US envoy to the UN said.
"Any offensive on the civilian people in Idlib was going to be dealt with," Haley told Fox News' Bret Baier.
"They used airplanes into towers," King said on Tuesday, describing the 9/11 attacks. "Now people can use the click of a computer key in St. Petersburg, Russia to attack," the lawmaker continued.
"It's an attack that continues and it's the same kind of attack today that occurred in 2001," King told the firefighters and first responders.
Moore, who was last dean of the School of Computer Science at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, will become the chief of cloud computing AI at the California company, where he previously worked between 2006 and 2014, at the end of the year.
"I am bursting with excitement about this," said Moore in a statement published by Google. "I have always deeply believed in the power of technology to improve the state of the world, so for me it's a big opportunity to help Google bring useful AI to all the other industry verticals."
But what those "industry verticals" are likely to be, will engender some concern.
In a tweet written on the seventeenth anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks, Gabbard noted that "while President Trump & VP Pence give 9/11 speeches about how much they care about the victims of al-Qaeda's attack on our country, they are simultaneously acting as protectors of AQ in Syria/Idlib, threatening Russia and Syria that if they attack al-Qaeda, we will punish them."
"The Coalition is pleased to announce that Fiji has joined the Coalition to defeat [DAESH] as its 79th member," Ryan said via Twitter.
He highlighted that Fiji has 40 years experience in international peacekeeping efforts, including in the Middle East. The nation is also seen as a leader in the Pacific region, he added.
Comment: One might wonder at the nature of the persuasion (coercion) that motivated the country's decision at this point in time...
Thornberry, Labour's shadow foreign secretary, asked the government if they would consult Parliament before taking military action over reports of chemical weapon attacks in areas controlled by Al-Qaeda proxy Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a US-proscribed terrorist organization.
This prompted hysterical responses on social media, with one Twitter user claiming: "This is UK Labour guided by the spirit of Thomas Mair" - the far-right activist who murdered Thornberry's fellow Labour MP Jo Cox. Another accused Thornberry of providing cover for Syrian President Bashar Assad's alleged crimes.

"The White Helmets are a humanitarian organization that has saved thousands of lives and continues to respond to bombardments by Russian and [Syrian] regime military forces," the official said on Wednesday.
The United States and the international community continue to support their work, the US defense official added.

The video is a full recording of Google's first all-hands meeting following the 2016 election (these weekly meetings are known inside the company as "TGIF" or "Thank God It's Friday" meetings). Sent to Breitbart News by an anonymous source, it features co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, VPs Kent Walker and Eileen Naughton, CFO Ruth Porat, and CEO Sundar Pichai. It can be watched in full here. It can and should be watched in full in order to get the full context of the meeting and the statements made.
Comment: Google is undeniably a partisan company, which is extremely problematic given its monopolistic power over public discourse. The fact that they are willing to act on their bias, despite claiming otherwise, is disturbing in its implications. Couple this with the fact that the company has at least "played" with the idea of mass behavior modification and "disturbing" becomes a wholly inadequate descriptor.
