Zelensky calls for Donbass elections in October

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
Ukraine's president has called for holding local elections in the war-torn east, along with the rest of the country, in October, despite the ongoing conflict in the region.

Speaking on February 15 at the Munich Security Conference, Volodymyr Zelenskiy again made a plea for support from Western nations for help in Kyiv's fight against Russia-backed separatists.

"The war in Ukraine -- I know -- is a war in Europe. Together with the annexation of Crimea, it has already been going on for as long as World War II -- just imagine!" Zelenskiy said.

"Our wish today is to hold local elections throughout all the territories of Ukraine, including particular parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in October 2020," he said. "There is the same wish concerning the territory of Crimea as well."

Comment: The Donbass is doable - it's a condition of the Minsk Agreements, after all. But as for Crimea, no chance:
Pompeo's bombshell: 'Crimea is lost and will remain Russian' quotes Ukrainian news outlet. True?

"The people in Donbas need elections that will be recognized by Ukraine and the entire world as legitimate," he said. "And they cannot be such if they are not held in line with Ukrainian legislation, at the sound of gunfire, and without [Ukraine's] control of our border."

Bill Barr calls for outside prosecutor to review the Michael Flynn case

Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn
Attorney General William Barr is bringing in an outside team to challenge the work of his own prosecutors in the case of Michael Flynn, President Trump's former national security adviser, according to a person familiar with the Justice Department's decision.

The Justice Department confirmed that Jeff Jensen, a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney's office in St. Louis, is working closely with Flynn prosecutor Brandon Van Grack to review the case. The issue being reviewed is not related to the supervision of the case. Van Grack worked on the special counsel's team.

CBS News has reported that Flynn's lawyers are trying to withdraw his guilty plea based on allegations that Van Grack sought to suborn perjury by allegedly pressuring Flynn to make false statements in a Virginia case against a former business partner, Bijan Rafiekian.

Two years ago, Flynn admitted he lied to the FBI in a case that stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The review of Flynn's case comes as prosecutors drop their investigation of Andrew McCabe, the former deputy FBI director and a frequent target of the president.

Barr's decision to review the criminal case against Flynn will be seen as another favor to the president, who has long felt his former national security advisor was treated unfairly. There are reports senior Justice Department officials pushed for a lighter sentence for Flynn than prosecutors originally sought, which is also what happened in the case of Roger Stone, the president's longtime friend, who has asked for a new trial.

Comment: Flynn was screwed over, plain and simple, so this is good news - whether it's a 'favor' to Trump or not.

Orbán: 'It's forbidden to say so in Europe, but migration is an organized invasion'

orban
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán - the only head of state in Europe who's been willing to take any real action to stop the ongoing migrant invasion of Europe - on Thursday spoke of the mounting migratory pressure on Hungary's southern border.

Following a routine inspection of Hungary's border fence with his Slovak counterpart, Peter Pellegrini, Orbán said that Hungarian authorities have started to prepare for an expected increase in the number of organized migrant caravans attempting to enter the country illegally as the weather improves, Remix News reports.

During an impromptu press conference, Prime Minister Orbán took the opportunity to express his gratitude for Slovakia's support, saying: "This is hard work which we would have a hard time doing without help and our allies.

'Change course before it's too late': Lavrov calls on Europe to reject false notion of 'Russian threat' in Munich speech

German troops taking part in NATO drills
NATO's eastward expansion and large-scale drills near Russian borders may lead to unpredictable consequences and it's time for Europe to change course, Russia's FM Sergey Lavrov told the Munich Security Conference.

Europe is where the "crisis of confidence" in international relations is felt the most, Foreign Minister Lavrov said as he took to the stage, explaining that "the structure of the Cold War rivalry is being recreated" on the continent.

"Escalating tensions, NATO's military infrastructure advancing to the East, exercises of unprecedented scope near the Russian borders, the pumping of defense budgets beyond measure - all this generates unpredictability," he added.

Comment: Behaving responsibly on the world stage would be dreadful for the US. It would have to completely retool its economy and begin competing on the open market for trade deals without forcing contracts at the end of the barrel of a gun.

Pompeo's sinophobic pressure campaign runs amok at National Governors' Association Convention

Of all the things the CIA is good at, insecurely threatening people who may potentially wish to work with Russia and China is at the top of the list.

This insecure passive aggressiveness shone with blinding intensity on February 8th during the annual National Governors' Association event, which saw 44 American state governors come together from February 7th-10th in Washington, DC.

During his speech, Pompeo's niceties quickly ended in order to launch into his main agenda behind speaking at this venue: To threaten all participants to stay away from China because "China is watching you. Working you."

Pompeo warned the attending governors not to make bilateral deals with China "that could undermine national policy", and stated: "Whether you are viewed by the CCP as friendly or hardline, know that its working you, know that its working the team around you. Competition with China is happening inside your state and it affects our capacity to perform America's vital national security functions."

Washington Beltway clutches its pearls over Trump's Roger Stone tweet

Roger Stone leaves the federal courthouse in Washington after being found guilty of obstructing a congressional investigation.
President Donald Trump's post-impeachment acquittal behavior is casting a chill in Washington, with Attorney General William Barr emerging as a key ally in the president's quest for vengeance against the law enforcement and national security establishment that initiated the Russia and Ukraine investigations.

In perhaps the most tumultuous day yet for the Justice Department under Trump, four top prosecutors withdrew on Tuesday from a case involving the president's longtime friend Roger Stone after senior department officials overrode their sentencing recommendation — a backpedaling that DOJ veterans and legal experts suspect was influenced by Trump's own displeasure with the prosecutors' judgment.

Comment: Townhall weighs in with some much needed background on the team that prosecuted Stone:
A day after a nine-year sentencing recommendation for the elderly Roger Stone was filed, Senior DOJ officials immediately distanced themselves from the recommendation. They told CBS News that the prison time recommendation was "extreme, excessive, grossly disproportionate to offenses," and that this is not what was briefed to the DOJ by the assigned prosecutors. Hours later, all four lawyers assigned to the case withdrew, with one, Jonathan Kravis, resigning from the DOJ entirely.

This is unusual, to say the least. Top to bottom, from the start of the case to this shocking end, has been unprecedented. What is going on?

President Trump asked:

I went to federal trial attorney Jesse Binnall for some answers. Binnall defends high-profile clients against political witch-hunts and has defended cases brought by Jonathan Kravis in the past. Currently, Binnall is defending Michael Flynn alongside Sidney Powell.

In your professional opinion, was anything unusual about the Roger Stone case?
"Roger Stone wouldn't ever have been a target of prosecution had he not been a Trump supporter. The President was absolutely right; the political underpinnings of this case are very disturbing. The events of the past few days show just how unusual this case really is."
Can you explain what exactly was unusual in recent days, and why?
"These four prosecutors filed a brief making a sentencing recommendation without getting approval from the chain of command. That is extraordinarily unusual in the DOJ. In fact, I can say it's unheard of at the DOJ; certainly, I've never heard of it. In practice, DOJ lawyers almost always get approval for everything they do."
Then, all four prosecutors on this case withdrew in succession, with one, Kravis, resigning from the DOJ entirely. This is unheard of. Why do you think they did it? Do you believe they planned and colluded?
"I think they knew exactly what was going to happen when they filed that sentencing recommendation, expecting they will be reined in for doing so. They could then play the role of martyrs by resigning from the case, with one of them resigning entirely from his job.

One of the most serious powers of a prosecutor is asking to deprive a defendant of freedom, requesting jail time. I think this [nine-year sentence] was an abuse of their power as prosecutors, to make a recommendation like this without making a departmental approval.

They knew leftist media would celebrate their disobedience and abuse of power. Leftist media has a history of fawning over people who martyr themselves for left-wing causes, just like Sally Yates. I think they wanted to leave the Roger Stone case with a bang.

Or, they did it because they were going rogue, and they didn't care what their supervisors thought. Perhaps because they don't like U.S. Attorney Shea. To them, this case is political, and it's personal. I think they suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome. TDS is a very serious condition!"
Jonathan Kravis appears to have been leading the Roger Stone prosecution and abruptly resigned from the DOJ. You have tried cases against him in the past. Did anything unusual happen in those cases?
"I was opposite Jonathan Kravis on The Ron Paul Three case, which was the prosecution of three Ron Paul campaign aids in Iowa. It was a politically-driven prosecution targeting three Republican activists.

First, Kravis and his partner violated an immunity agreement -a proffer agreement- they signed with a co-defendant in that case, and the judge dismissed the codefendant's case based on prosecutorial misconduct.

Then, Kravis hid exculpatory and impeachment information from my client, Dimitri Kesari.

Kravis' team later violated my client's attorney-client confidentiality, obtaining text message communications between Kessari and me, shockingly producing the conversations to another co-defendant in the case!"
Are there any similarities between the Roger Stone case and The Ron Paul Three case?
"Jonathan Kravis did the same thing to my client Kesari that he did to Roger Stone. Remember how they raided the 68-year-old's home to arrest him? They did the same thing to Kesari. Feds busted into his house at 6 in the morning and dragged his 15-year-old daughter out on the side of a busy road, in her underwear. For context, this case was about a failure to report a campaign expenditure on an FEC form."
This type of raid, for noncompliance with a federal form, is an absolutely absurd abuse of government power.

What is your take on Jonathan Kravis' intentions?
"Kravis is very calculating. He is a former Obama White House lawyer and I think he came to the DOJ with a political agenda. In fact, I think he's an angry Democrat who can't stop abusing his power as a prosecutor. It's good that he has left government"
Did Kravis achieve his agenda?
"I think Kravis is upset that the President of the United States and the Attorney General are putting limits on his political prosecutions."
Are the President and AG Barr within their power to do so?
"Absolutely, that is their constitutional duty."
Can AG Barr punish Kravis for abuse of power?
"I think he should be investigated under 18 USC 242 for deprivation of constitutional rights under the color of the law. Kravis has violated his obligations under Brady, he violated a defendant's proffer agreement, a violation of a defendant's 5th Amendment rights, and that's just what I know about. I think the DOJ should look into all the cases that Kravis has been a part of.

Someone needs to put a stop to prosecutorial misconduct, and this is just the President to do it."
Indeed, in response to questions raised by the public as to the seemingly-underhanded prosecution of Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, President Trump tweeted the question, "Prosecutorial Misconduct?"

The real question remaining is what will President Trump do about it?

In the meantime, Binnall opines that Kravis will probably be going into the private sector, where Kravis is likely to be making three times as much money as before.
Tucker Carlson lays out the real reason for Stone's railroading. If Stone goes to jail, the Russiagate hoaxers can point to it forever as proof they were "right":

'Winning' or 'weakening'? Pompeo, Macron disagree on what the future holds for the West

Comment: You know the US world order is toast when the neo-liberal poster boy president of France is pointing out that the emperor has no clothes...

As the US secretary of state bragged about the successes of the West at the Munich Security Conference, the French president seemed rather skeptical, saying the Western world is no longer dominant.

"I'm happy to report that the death of the Transatlantic alliance is grossly exaggerated. The West is winning, we are collectively winning and we're doing it together," Mike Pompeo said at the Munich Security Conference this Saturday, making a veiled swipe at French President Emmanuel Macron's famous "brain death" of NATO remarks.

"Free" nations "are simply more successful than any other model that's been tried in the history of civilizations," he said, noting that migrants flee to Europe, not Cuba, and that people go to study "in Cambridge and not Caracas" while businesses are opened in Silicon Valley and not in St. Petersburg.

Speaking shortly after Pompeo, Macron used his time to shred the glossy picture of the world painted by the American diplomat.

'Communist,' 'left-wing version of Trump' Liberals freak-out as Bernie gains ground in Nevada, Texas poll

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders
Mainstream Democrats have gone on the attack as Bernie Sanders has become an undeniable frontrunner in the presidential race, with him topping new polls out of Texas and Nevada.

After coming out victorious in the New Hampshire primary and squeezing out a second place finish in Iowa — though many supporters maintain he won — Bernie Sanders is looking like the real frontrunner in the race for the 2020 presidential nomination from the Democrat Party.

New polls out of Nevada and Texas have only cemented that fact. Sanders topped a Nevada poll conducted earlier this week by WPA Intelligence for Las Vegas Review Journal and AARP Nevada, with 25 percent of likely Democrat voters saying they will support the Vermont senator in the caucuses on February 22. That gives him a clear lead over more mainstream candidates like Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, who earned 18 and 13 percent in the poll, respectively.

A poll out of Texas, which will have its primary on Super Tuesday, March 3, from The University of Texas and Texas Tribune also has Sanders in the lead with 24 percent support, well ahead of Biden, Warren and others who topped him in the same poll in October when the senator earned only 12 percent support.

Turkey intends to drive Syrian army out of Idlib Province, demands its exit by end of February

Tensions in northern Syria began to escalate earlier this month when Turkey retaliated against the killing of eight Turkish nationals in a shelling which Ankara claims was conducted by Syrian forces on one of Turkey's observation posts in the Arab country's Idlib province.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay told the country's NTV broadcaster on Saturday that Ankara "has fulfilled its responsibilities" in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, in sync with its agreement on de-escalation zones with Moscow and Tehran.

"Some of our [military] observation posts have now fallen into areas controlled by the [Syrian] regime", Oktay added, in an apparent reference to the posts that Turkey established in the province under the trilateral deal.

He also warned that Ankara will use military power to drive the Syrian Army out of Idlib unless it withdraws from the province by the end of February.
"The [Bashar Assad] regime must know this: if attacks on our military continue, Turkey will know no bounds [in its retaliation]. This message was clearly conveyed to Russia."
He spoke after the Russian Defence Ministry blamed the escalation of the situation in Idlib on Turkey's failure to live up to its obligations on Syria.

Comment: Erdogan says the Syrians don't even have that long: they need to leave immediately - otherwise Turkey will invade the Syrian province.
"Until the regime's [Syrian government] forces pull out beyond the borders [of the Idlib de-escalation zone] outlined in the Sochi agreement, the problem will not be solved. If they do not leave, we will do this work without waiting until the end of February," Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul, broadcast by the NTV channel.
Spoken like a true gobshite! Turkey continues to support terrorists in Idlib (allegedly, but it's pretty likely - they've been doing it for years):
According to the source, who asked to remain unidentified, Syria's Idlib de-escalation zone now contains over 70 Turkish-sourced tanks, about 200 armoured vehicles and 80 pieces of artillery.

The source said that Turkish armoured vehicles, poorly driven by their untrained terrorist crews, are being spotted more and more often by the Syrian Army. "In the last week alone, government forces repelling attacks by militants destroyed over 20 Turkish-supplied tanks and infantry fighting vehicles," the source said.

The source also indicated that US-made MANPAD air defence systems being used by terrorists in Idlib were sourced from Turkish military stocks. "The US MANPADS which were in service with the Turkish armed forces, which the militants did not have access to before, fell into the hands of the terrorists thanks to Turkish deliveries," the source said.
...
Finally, the source alleged that Ankara is continuing to transfer personnel, weapons and equipment into Idlib, despite Ankara's statements about seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Support a NATO ally in military conflict with Russia? The people say 'no'

NATO troops during the Libyan war
NATO is marketed as providing each member nation with the benefit that the other member nations are committed to coming to its aid militarily in the event of an attack by another nation, especially Russia. However, Pew Research Center poll results released Sunday indicate that the majority or plurality of people in 11 of 16 NATO countries where individuals were questioned oppose their respective governments meeting this commitment, at least if the military adversary were Russia.

These poll results indicate that serious thought should be given to disbanding NATO, an organization with a primary objective that appears to be at odds with public opinion in many NATO countries.

When asked if their respective countries' governments should use military force to defend a NATO ally country neighboring Russia with which "Russia got into a serious military conflict," people living in the 16 NATO countries tended to answer in the negative. "No" was the answer for the majority of polled individuals in eight countries — France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Turkey. In three more NATO countries — the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland — a plurality rejected military intervention.
