DNI Grenell blasts Mark Warner: 'Stop cherry-picking' docs in Flynn case

Outgoing Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell slammed Sen. Mark Warner Tuesday saying his request last week to declassify and publicly release the underlying intelligence reports in which Obama officials "unmasked" the identity of former national security advisor Michael Flynn would jeopardize sources and methods.

Grenell also criticized Warner's alleged political move as 'cherry picking' documents for political purposes at the expense of national security. Warner is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and spoke out against Grenell's declassification of the senior Obama officials that requested Flynn's private conversations and unmasking of his name.

"I find it puzzling that your letter initially complains about the declassification of the identities of unmaskers, a declassification that posed no conceivable risks to sources or methods, only to then request the declassification of actual intelligence reports," said Grenell.

"Cherry picking certain documents for release, while attacking the release of others that don't fit your political narrative, is part of the problem the American people have with Washington DC politicians. I would appreciate it if you would explain your philosophy on transparency as it appears to be based solely on political advantage."

New data released in a UN report on human rights in Ukraine found that in 2019, in the Donbass at least 105 civilians became victims of shelling (dead and wounded) , 81% of them are residents of the DPR and LPR.

The conflict began six years ago when the Obama administration carried out a coup which installed a puppet government, whose policy involved the ethnic cleansing of the eastern part of the country of Ukraine who often self-identify as ethnic Russian.

Attempts to control the economy and legal system in Ukraine by Joe Biden through extra-legal means have become the subject of an ongoing scandal within the US.

In 2019, in the Donbass, 27 civilians were killed and 140 injured as a result of hostilities. This is 40% less than a year earlier (then there were 55 dead and 226 wounded). As a result, last year's indicators became the lowest for the entire period of the conflict.

Comment: Zelensky seems powerless to stop elements of his military from continuing the war against the Donbass separatists - who want nothing to do with with the US backed neo-Nazi contingent in Kiev that is still vying for power. What's worse, Ukraine's new president has turned out to be something of a mediocrity.

The U.S. military has provided more details about an alleged Russian deployment of fighter jets to Libya, as officials in Russia continued to deny the presence of Russian military aircraft or personnel in the North African country.

The United States says Moscow deployed the jets to provide support for Russian mercenaries helping a local warlord battle Libya's internationally recognized government.

The alleged deployment could have a big impact on the war pitting the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) of Khalifa Haftar and forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA), which is recognized by the United Nations.

Over the course of the coronavirus crisis, Anders Tegnell, Sweden's state epidemiologist, the man often seen as the architect of the country's no-lockdown strategy, has emerged as a polarising figure, winning both praise and scorn.

Swedish state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell has been exposed to repeated threats, which have prompted an investigation from the police democracy and hate crime group, the newspaper Aftonbladet reported.

As early as 19 March, Tegnell received an email at his job address, which presented a threatening situation.

Another one bites the dust. In less two years, President Donald Trump has now binned three major arms-control treaties - quite a record for undermining decades of international security architecture. First there was the nuclear accord with Iran (2018), then the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty (2019), and now the Open Skies Treaty.

There is growing concern that the Trump administration will let the last-remaining arms-control treaty fall - the New START (2010) which limits strategic nuclear missiles held by the U.S. and Russia. If it goes, then the world is facing an arms race not seen since the Cold War. It will be open season for nukes.

Into the malign mix are the current heightened tensions between the U.S., NATO, Russia and China. Confrontation could spin out of control with catastrophic consequences for the planet. There is a grim sense that risk of nuclear conflagration is greater than at any time since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis more than half a century ago.

The US is giving foreign governments 60 days to wrap up work on Iranian nuclear facilities - 90 days for the civilian reactor in Bushehr - or face Washington's sanctions, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced.

Washington has offered waivers for its sanctions against Tehran in connection with several civilian facilities since President Donald Trump unilaterally exited a nuclear deal with Iran in 2018. Now those waivers are being phased out entirely, Pompeo said on Wednesday.

European, Chinese and Russian companies working on nuclear projects in Iran will have two months to wrap up their operations or face US sanctions. The only exception is Unit 1 of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, where the waiver will be extended for 90 days "to ensure safety," the State Department said.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) pact had been negotiated by the Obama administration and envisioned a 10-year moratorium on most nuclear research in Iran. It was intended to prevent Tehran from developing an atomic bomb - something Israel had claimed was imminent at the time. Trump campaigned on denouncing the deal as "terrible" and pledging he would scrap it.

Comment: It's always Israel. Keep in mind that Israel has illegal nuclear weapons - Iran doesn't. Yet Iran is the one being attacked for allegedly trying to get them. Then recall that the last U.S. politicians to try to curb Israel's nuclear weapons program were the Kennedys...

Huawei CFO Meng loses key court fight against extradition to United States

Huawei Technologies Co's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was dealt a setback by a Canadian court on Wednesday as she tries to avoid extradition to the United States to face bank fraud charges.

Meng, a Chinese citizen, was arrested in December 2018 on a warrant issued by U.S. authorities. They accuse her of bank fraud for misleading HSBC about Huawei's relationship with a company operating in Iran, putting HSBC at risk of fines and penalties for breaking U.S. sanctions on Tehran.

Meng's lawyers argued the case should be thrown out because Canada did not have sanctions against Iran.

But British Columbia's Superior Court Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes disagreed, ruling the legal standard of double criminality had been met.

"Ms. Meng's approach ... would seriously limit Canada's ability to fulfill its international obligations in the extradition context for fraud and other economic crimes," Holmes said.

The ruling paves the way for the extradition hearing to proceed to the second phase starting June, examining whether Canadian officials followed the law while arresting Meng.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder brushed off criticism from the Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin, calling him "a dwarf" in his personal podcast. The diplomat had accused him of being a 'lobbyist' for Moscow.

The veteran politician, who is still deemed a talented orator in Germany, launched his own podcast this week. The otherwise calm conversation, mostly revolving around Germany's "good" handling of the Covid-19 epidemic, suddenly spiraled into an angry outburst by the ex-chancellor near the end.

When speaking about the need to unite in fight against the novel coronavirus and to ditch sanctions imposed against various nations, including Russia, Schroeder attacked Ukrainian envoy Andriy Melnyk without naming him.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people in care homes have been dying in droves.

Why is this happening? Is it simply because older adults are very vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 and therefore it's not unexpected that many would succumb?

Or do care homes deserve the lion's share of the blame, such as by paying so poorly that many workers have to split their time between several facilities, spreading the virus in the process?

Alternatively, could medical experts and government bureaucrats, with the full knowledge of at least the top tier of government officials, have created conditions shortly after the pandemic struck that contribute to the high death tolls while engendering virtually no public backlash against themselves?

This article shows that the third hypothesis is highly plausible. The people who created the conditions may be unaware of, or oblivious to, their implications. But it's also possible that at least some of them know exactly what they're doing.

After all - seeing it from an amoral government's point of view - the growing numbers of elderly are a big burden on today's fiscally strained governments, because in aggregate they're paying much less into the tax base than younger people while causing the costs of healthcare and retirement programs to skyrocket.
