Puppet Masters
There are warships deployed by US Navy in the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Persian Gulf. They are ready to launch roughly 400 long-range Tomahawks against a target in the Middle East on any given day. Sea-launched cruise missiles were used to strike Syria in April. Anything that is at all related to the military operations on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean is hush-hush information, but it's an open secret that the strategic bombers based there can launch at least a hundred cruise missiles and then use other high-precision munitions in a follow-up attack. On average, one bomber carries 20 AGM-86 ALCMs. Five bombers are believed to be normally stationed on this island that is off-limits to inquisitive outsiders. This means that at least 500 cruise missiles can be fired on short notice.
On March 17, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that Great Britain, France, and some additional countries besides the US had special forces operating in Syria that were engaging the Syrian Army directly. But it's not just commandos.
In an address that was broadcast soon after the Central Election Commission announced the official results of the March 18 presidential poll, Vladimir Putin said that over 76 percent of voters had backed him for a new term, which was the largest-ever support for a presidential candidate in modern Russian history.
Putin recalled his previous addresses to voters, which he had made immediately after elections. He said they had been right and timely but added that, given such a tremendous level of support, he considered his previous expressions of gratitude insufficient.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle on Thursday, the UK foreign secretary claimed that a Porton Down scientist was "absolutely categorical" in confirming to him that the source of the nerve agent, identified by the UK as A-234 - also known as Novichok - was Russian. Johnson said: "Let me be clear with you... the people from Porton Down, the laboratory... they were absolutely categorical and I asked the guy myself, I said, 'Are you sure?' And he said there's no doubt."
Comment: Craig Murray goes further in his examination of the court documents. He writes:
This constitutes irrefutable evidence that the government have been straight out lying - to Parliament, to the EU, to NATO, to the United Nations, and above all to the people - about their degree of certainty of the origin of the attack. It might well be an attack originating in Russia, but there are indeed other possibilities and investigation is needed. As the government has sought to whip up jingoistic hysteria in advance of forthcoming local elections, the scale of the lie has daily increased.

Guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin transits in formation with Japanese JS Kirisame vessel during bilateral training in South China Sea in 2015.
The USS Mustin came within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago, known as Nansha Islands in China, Reuters reported Friday, citing unnamed officials.
The Chinese Defense Ministry was quick to confirm the report, coming up with a fiery rebuff of Washington's behavior in the region. The Chinese Navy vessels Huangshan and Zhenjiang "took immediate action... to warn off and dispel" the US warship, Ren Guoqiang, the ministry's spokesman, said in a statement.
Comment: The Asia Times reports more on the timing of this provocation:
"It was America's first such operation since January and came a day after US President Donald Trump announced it would levy US$60 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports - triggering immediate retaliation from Beijing," said a report in the South China Morning Post. [...]
US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an order directing his trade representative to impose US$60 billion in tariffs on a range of Chinese products. Along with the tariffs, new investment restrictions will be erected and actions will be taken against China through the World Trade Organization, the president said. But the exact details of how and when Trump's tariffs will be imposed remain unclear.
"Starting March 23, all legal and physical entities will be able to purchase the petro directly... within the next 15 days for convertible currencies: yuan, rubles, Turkish liras and euro," said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
He described these are the most important currencies for "the economic future of the planet."
Maduro said state companies that are exporting goods, such as the country's energy giant PDVSA, can already trade for petro. "PDVSA and those enterprises that trade for foreign currency are authorized from now on to receive 'el petro' for their export deliveries," he said, adding that they will be able to supply products for the Venezuelan cryptocurrency "to all countries and enterprises in the world."

USS Mustin (November 15, 2017, off the coast of Japan)
China's Defense Ministry stated March 23 that the United States harmed China's sovereignty and jeopardized its security by conducting the operation earlier that day. The ministry accused the US of having conducted a "serious military provocation."
Specifically, the USS Mustin, whose motto is "Always Be Bold," cruised within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef in the Spratly archipelago, US officials told Reuters. The atoll was once a fisherman's shelter yet has evolved into a full on military base with the help of China's artificial island construction activities.
Comment: Beijing insists that the repeated dispatch of US warships to the South China Sea is "undermining regional peace and stability" and hurting bilateral relations.
China has lodged a protest with the United States after an American destroyer USS Mustin sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea.See also: US-China trade war: Trump imposes $60bn in tariffs, China vows to fight to the end, US says 'buy more American gas' to avoid more
Beijing demands an end to US "provocations actions which violate the sovereignty of the People's Republic and pose a serious threat to its security, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said in Beijing.
Briefing reporters on Friday, ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called on Washington to respect regional countries' efforts aimed at securing peace and stability in the South China Sea.
Yesterday in an interview with Deutsche Welle Boris Johnson claimed directly Porton Down had told him they positively identified the nerve agent as Russian:
You argue that the source of this nerve agent, Novichok, is Russia. How did you manage to find it out so quickly? Does Britain possess samples of it?I knew and had published from my own whistleblowers that this is a lie. Until now I could not prove it. But today I can absolutely prove it, due to the judgement at the High Court case which gave permission for new blood samples to be taken from the Skripals for use by the OPCW.
Let me be clear with you ... When I look at the evidence, I mean the people from Porton Down, the laboratory ...
So they have the samples ...
They do. And they were absolutely categorical and I asked the guy myself, I said, "Are you sure?" And he said there's no doubt.

Alexander Nix, chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, at the Concordia Summit for public-private business partnerships in New York in September. The firm claimed to have developed psychographic profiles that could predict the political leanings of every American adult.
But two nights ago my interest was piqued when, at the height of Cambridge Analytica's domination of the news cycle, the BBC gave it considerably less airtime than the alcohol abuse problems of someone named Ant. The evening before, the BBC had on Newsnight given the CEO of Cambridge Analytica the most softball interview imaginable. If the BBC is obviously downplaying something, it is usually defending a deep British Establishment interest.
It took me a minute to find out that Cambridge Analytica is owned by a British company, SCL Ltd, which in effect does exactly the same activities in the UK that Cambridge Analytica was undertaking in the US. I then looked up SCL on Bloomberg.
The Tory leader's tweet on Friday was met with an angry response by people claiming she was being misleading. Some on Twitter suggested the PM is living in a parallel universe, while others accused her of shirking responsibility to her citizens.
Comment: From Wikipedia:
A zero-hour contract is a type of contract between an employer and a worker, where the employer is not obliged to provide any minimum working hours, while the worker is not obliged to accept any work offered. The employee may sign an agreement to be available for work as and when required, so that no particular number of hours or times of work are specifiedThe gilded age of robber barons has returned.
[...]
Workers subject to zero-hour contracts are vulnerable to exploitation as they may be denied work at any time for any reason, including declining to respond to a demand to work. A refusal to work in any one instance for any reason can result in a prolonged period of lack of work. In 2014, millions of workers were still trapped in low-paid, highly insecure jobs, where mistreatment is the norm and where there is limited prospect of escape, said the Trade Union Congress. Due to the uncertainty of the workers' schedules zero-hour contracts present problems for workers with children due to the difficulty of arranging child care.
Trump tweeted Friday morning that he was considering blocking the bill because of a lack of funding for the Mexican border wall and because 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigrants aren't even mentioned in the legislation.
"DACA was abandoned by the Democrats. Very unfair to them! Would have been tied to desperately needed Wall," the president added. He eventually signed the bill in a White House press conference at 1pm local time on Friday.
Speaking at the press conference, Trump said recent budget cuts have put America at risk and it was a matter of national security to sign the bill. Describing the rushed manner in which the legislation was passed as "ridiculous," he said he will "never" sign a bill like this again.
