Turkey makes another move in the new 'Great Game'

Turkish army tanks stationed near the Syrian border in operation "Olive Branch".
President Tayyip Erdogan's 'Olive Branch' operation appears to have support at home and in Moscow, but failure would spell problems

"Olive Branch" is the Orwellian-named Turkish invasion of a chunk of Syria. The operation comes as no surprise. President Tayyip Erdogan had hinted for nearly a year that a move was likely in the Syrian Kurdish canton of Afrin.

With Ankara staging a full-scale offensive into this small piece of Syrian real estate, which is roughly 40 kilometers long and 30 km wide, the endgame looks a foregone conclusion.

After all, it is defended by a minimally equipped force of no more than 10,000. Turkish soldiers should take it in record time.

Diplomatic sources confirmed to Asia Times that the Turkish offensive was directly approved by Russian generals after a visit to Moscow by Hakan Fidan, second in command at the MIT, the Turkish secret service.

According to Walla news, Benjamin Netanyahu's wife yelled at an aide after a gossip column failed to describe her as a psychologist. Prime Mininster: This is a defamation campaign

Sara Netanyahu was recorded losing her temper at a Netanyahu family aide, according to a tape from 2009 released Sunday by the Israeli news site Walla. According to the report, the aide facilitated the publication of a gossip column which mentioned the Israeli prime minister's wife, but reportedly failed to properly state the fact that she is a trained psychologist.

Netanyahu is heard yelling in the recording, "This must be stopped. I am doing it! As a professional, as an educated woman, as a psychologist." Netanyahu then yelled out her credentials: "B.A! M.A.! That's it!"

In response, the aide is heard saying: "But it says in the first sentence that you're a psychologist," to which she answered: "No." The aide continued, saying that "in the first sentence [it says that] you're a psychologist."

Behind the Headlines: Russiagate Coming to a Head? FISA Memo Fever grips Washington DC

obama FISA

Concealer-in-chief?
The great battle to delegitimize and possibly unseat President Trump appears to be coming to a head - in its current phase anyway. Speculation in Washington has reached fever-pitch over when Congress will publish the apparently damning contents of what has become known as the 'FISA Memo'.

According to those who have viewed it, the memo exposes collusion between the FBI and the DOJ to frame Trump for 'colluding with Russia'. Its publication would put an official seal on what most already know: that 'deep state' actors used the infamous Steele Dossier as a justification to spy on and undermine Trump, his campaign, and then his presidency.

A groundswell of support for Trump has seen viral a campaign for declassifying and releasing the memo so that 'Russiagate' is laid to rest. But the DOJ, as well as the Democrats and their obliging media spin-masters, have been doing their level best to suppress its release and downplay its significance. The twists and turns in the Deep State vs Trump just never stop!

Join us this Sunday 28 January from 12-1:30pm EST / 5-6:30pm UTC / 6-7:30pm CET on Behind the Headlines as we discuss the many facets of this High Drama, and cover other significant events of the day.

Ellen Brown: How Uncle Sam launders marijuana money

cash crop
© Natural Blaze
In a blatant example of "do as I say, not as I do," the US government is profiting handsomely by accepting marijuana cash in the payment of taxes while imposing huge penalties on banks for accepting it as deposits. Onerous reporting requirements are driving small local banks to sell out to Wall Street. Congress needs to harmonize federal with state law.

Thirty states and the District of Columbia currently have laws broadly legalizing marijuana in some form. The herb has been shown to have significant therapeutic value for a wide range of medical conditions, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, lung disease, anxiety, muscle spasms, hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease, and arthritis pain. The community of Americans who rely on legal medical marijuana was estimated to be 2.6 million people in 2016 and includes a variety of mainstream constituency groups like veterans, senior citizens, cancer survivors, and parents of epileptic children. Unlike patented pharmaceuticals, which are now the leading cause of death from drug overdose, there have been no recorded deaths from marijuana overdose in the US. By comparison, alcohol causes 30,000 deaths annually, and prescription drugs taken as directed are estimated to kill 100,000 Americans per year.

Protesters clash with police during a demonstration against the re-election of Honduras' President Hernandez near the National Congress in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The ex-presidential hopeful called on people to gather around the location of the event to prevent the president from assuming his "fraudulent" new term.

Salvador Nasralla, the former Honduran presidential candidate for the Opposition Alliance against the Dictatorship, said Friday that the "last chance" to prevent current President Juan Orlando Hernandez from acquiring a new term was Saturday, when he is expected to be sworn-in, because his re-election was carried out with "fraud".

"Tomorrow is the last chance for Honduras to avoid a dictatorship, it is the last opportunity," Nasralla told reporters before leading a convoy of vehicles from different neighborhoods of the capital Tegucigalpa. "People, hopefully you do not waste it because the dictatorships are atrocious."

The new Honduran Congress held its first session Thursday, which the opposition protested and said was also void because the elections were fraudulent. Hernandez will be sworn-in in front of the country's newly elected lawmakers Saturday.

Mr. Hernández, center, begins his new term shadowed by the deeply disputed election in November.
As the early-morning ceremony unfolded at the stadium, security forces fired tear gas on protesters marching toward the event. Among the demonstrators, who numbered in the thousands, was the opposition candidate, Salvador Nasralla, who has refused to accept the election results.

Observers from the European Union and the Organization of American States documented many irregularities in the election. The ballot count was suspended several times, and Mr. Nasralla, who had been substantially ahead, was eventually declared to have lost by about 50,000 votes.

Although the huge demonstrations in the weeks after the election have dwindled, Mr. Nasralla's supporters have continued to protest, meeting with a sharp police response. As many as 22 people have been killed by security forces, according to a tally by the Committee of Relatives of the Disappeared in Honduras, a human rights group.

Israel summons Polish diplomat Piotr Kozlowski over Holocaust bill

On January 26, Poland passed legislation, banning speculation on the nation's complicity in crimes against humanity committed by Nazi Germany during World War II.

Two days after the bill was adopted, Israel summoned Piotr Kozlowski, the charge d'affaire for Poland's embassy, for clarification.

"Israel's opposition to the wording of the bill was expressed to him. The timing of the bill - the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day - was particularly surprising and unfortunate," Israel's foreign ministry said, adding that "the legislation will not help further the exposure of historical truth and may harm freedom of research, as well as prevent discussion of the historical message and legacy of World War II".

Comment: Note that Israel is only concerned about free speech when it benefits Israel. It does not believe in free speech when it comes to describing the plight of the Palestinians for example. Indeed, no, instead that is described as antisemitism.

Bill Maher Trump
The one issue that has forced Bill Maher to side with POTUS Trump.

Radical left liberal hero Bill Maher left his fans, and Trump hating panel speechless on Friday when he stated that he supports President Trump's announcement to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Bill Maher said...
"I hate to agree with Donald Trump and it doesn't happen often but I do. I don't know why with Israel it's been their capital (Jerusalem) since 1949. It's where their government is. They've won all the wars thrown against them. I don't understand why they don't get to have their capital where they want."

Mike Pence goes 'messianic' in Jerusalem

Mike Pence Israel Wall
Not long ago it seemed that the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority were eager to negotiate a peace deal. Secretary of State John Kerry's leadership of this effort from July 2013 to April 2014 will likely never be matched by the Trump administration. Over a period of nine months, Kerry's shuttle diplomacy raised eyebrows amidst strained relations between Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama as he attempted to chart a proposal through almost a hundred meetings between Palestinian, Israeli, and American negotiators. The effort ultimately proved fruitless; yet it remains instructive.

Five months into the talks and after repeated leaks of intense discussions among the negotiators, the most scathing assessment came from Moshe Ya'alon, then Netanyahu's Defense Minister. In January 2014, he said "the American security plan presented to us is not worth the paper it's written on," and that the Secretary was "acting out of incomprehensible obsession and a messianic feeling, cannot teach me anything about the conflict with the Palestinians."
