Soros warns Trump: Cold war with China more important than just US interests

Donald Trump wants to improve the US economy instead of shunning economic cooperation with China as part of a crusade for democracy, billionaire activist George Soros has complained in an op-ed article.

The US president should be applauded for waging economic warfare against China, but he must not use restrictions placed on Huawei as a bargaining chip to cut a trade deal with Beijing, the Hungarian-American businessman wrote in the opinion piece, published by The Wall Street Journal.

In it, the founder of the Open Society Foundations accuses Trump of seeking a trade deal with China as part of a cynical plot to "bolster the US stock market and economy to improve his chances at re-election."

Instead of concerning himself with the economy, Soros suggests that Trump should keep piling economic pressure on Beijing, in a bid to "open" Chinese society to liberal reforms. "My interest in defeating Xi Jinping's China goes beyond US national interests," Soros admits, criticizing Trump for not sharing his worldview.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday tweeted that he will be delaying the increased tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese goods to Oct. 15 from Oct. 1 as a "gesture of good will" to China.

Trump said the postponement came "at the request of the Vice Premier of China, Liu He, and due to the fact that the People's Republic of China will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary." The tariffs were set to increase to 30% from 25% on the goods. He is set to be in Washington for talks in early October.

U.S. stock futures jumped more than 0.5% percent after news of the delay. The Dow is poised to open up 150+ points on Thursday.

President Trump wanted to double tariff rates on Chinese goods last month after Beijing's latest retaliation in the trade war before settling on a smaller increase, sources told CNBC. He was outraged after he learned Aug. 23 that China had formalized plans to slap duties on $75 billion in U.S. products in response to new tariffs from Washington on Sept. 1.

On Tuesday, Judge Emmett Sullivan quizzed federal prosecutors and defense attorney Sidney Powell on the next steps in the Michael Flynn criminal case that has been lingering for more than a year in a D.C. District Court. Judge Sullivan had scheduled the hearing earlier this month in response to Powell's motion to compel the government to hand over Brady material: material in the government's possession that is favorable to the accused.

But what should have been a quick hearing to set a briefing schedule turned into a 45-minute preview of Powell's plan to combat what she characterized as egregious government misconduct.

"There is far more at stake here than sentencing. As new counsel, we have an ethical obligation to review everything that has happened in the case or not happened, as the case may be, and that is why we filed the motion to compel production of Brady material."

She then proceeded to detail several examples of the government's "stunning failures to produce Brady" material, such as the government's delay in providing the Lisa Page and Peter Strzok text messages to Flynn's prior counsel and withholding of various internal documents exonerating Flynn of being a Russian agent and violating the Logan Act.

Powell also hit hard the government's failure to disclose the original Flynn 302 interview summary written by FBI Agent Joseph Pientka.

Islamabad suffered great losses when it joined Washington's War on Terror, and in the end the US still pinned the blame on Pakistan for its own setbacks in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan told RT in an exclusive interview.

Pakistan took a serious hit after joining the US-led global campaign against terrorism, Khan revealed. Before that, Islamabad had been training the Islamist Mujahedeen fighters, who were "funded by the American CIA" to wage war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s. But as it was the US' turn to invade Afghanistan, "these groups turned against us," he stated.

"We lost 70,000 people. We lost over $100 billion [from] the economy. And in the end, we were blamed for the Americans not succeeding in Afghanistan. I felt it was very unfair to Pakistan."

Kremlin: Bolton's sacking won't change US foreign policy but Russia is always ready to talk

Moscow is ready to do its part in mending ties with Washington, although it doesn't believe than John Bolton's abrupt departure from the White House is likely to alter anything about US foreign policy.

With Bolton gone, pundits around the world are trying to guess if this provides an opportunity to resolve some of the diplomatic deadlocks the US is stuck in. But Russia doesn't set its expectations too high, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told media on Wednesday.

We don't think that the presence or dismissal of any official -even this influential- has a serious impact on correcting American foreign policy.

Comment: What Peskov is getting at without outright saying it is that people like Bolton represent the wishes of the elite Deep State, and his removal from the Trump Admin will not stop them from continuing to influence the president's foreign policy.

Nevertheless, Russia is determined to find a way out "from that dire state our bilateral ties are still in," Peskov reiterated. But it always takes two willing sides for this to happen, which leaves Moscow to just hope that the US "will demonstrate political will sooner or later."

Recently, the Japanese government announced that they will be shutting down the remaining 7 nuclear reactors at the Daiichi plant that was hit by a major earthquake and tsunami in 2011. This will bring the total number of nuclear reactors down to 33 (compared to 54 in 2011), only 7 of which are in active operation at any given time. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a good thing.

Since the tsunami hit on April 11, 2011 killing 18,000 civilians, there has been a tendency to refer to the event falsely as "Japan's nuclear crisis". The fear that has spread across the world resulted in one of the most devastating attacks on sovereign nations which could have only been executed had we done this to ourselves.

Japan - a nation which became the world's 3rd largest economy due largely to its commitment to advanced scientific and technological progress and early embrace of nuclear power, has lost much of the energy self-sufficiency it once enjoyed when 25% of its electricity came from nuclear which today has fallen to 3%. Since the shutdown Japan has been forced to massively increase its imports of oil, natural gas and coal bringing in 9 million barrels/day and building 45 new coal plants. This dependency has not only subject it to the whims of the speculative markets, but also to the uncertain stability of the Middle East oil production.

Due to the hysteria unleashed in the wake of Fukushima, Germany was quick to follow the fear wave and declared that its full exit from nuclear by 2022 causing it to vastly increase its imports of fossil fuel from Russia, the Netherlands and USA (and ironically nuclear energy imports from France whose use of nuclear amounts to 70% of its energy basket). Once shut down in 2022, Germany will lose 22GW (or 11% of total capacity).

Boris Johnson's leadership campaign backers in the City stand to make billions of pounds from his 'do or die' pledge to take Britain out the of the EU by the end of October, Byline Times can reveal.

On the day Johnson was announced as Prime Minister by his party on 23 July, it was reported that "more than half of the donations received by Boris Johnson originated from donors with ties to the City". However, this newspaper has discovered that this figure is actually much higher - and that many of the hedge funds involved are set to make a killing from his hard-line approach to Brexit.

According to the records of both the elections watchdog, the Electoral Commission and the Register of Financial Interests , between 10 May and 23 July, Johnson received £655,500 in donations. Of these, two thirds - £432,500 (65%) - came from hedge funds, City traders or the very wealthy.

Under the 1922 Committee's rules governing the Conservative Party leadership election, spending is capped at £150,000 per candidate, so that all contenders have an equal chance of competing. However, these limits only apply to the short campaign, which began on 7 July and excluded the period in May when Johnson announced his long-anticipated leadership bid. £318,000 of the donations were submitted late, after the leadership election result had been announced. These late filings conceal a significant trend.

Comment: In other Brexit news, Johnson has ruled out Farage's proposed election pact to deliver on Brexit, because Farage should "never be allowed anywhere near government", in the words of a Conservative source.

The Scottish appeals court has ruled Johnson's suspension of parliament unconstitutional (contradicting London judges). Labour has demanded recall of parliament. And Len McClusky, the leader of one of Britain's biggest trade unions, says Johnson may face citizen's arrest if he visits Scotland.

According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have long ago delivered on his promise to seize a part of the West Bank, but for a number of legal complications ahead of the 17 September vote - something the US, which is getting ready to roll out its peace plan, has been informed about.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday he planned to declare sovereignty over the Jordan Valley, nearly a quarter of the West Bank, but was dissuaded by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit who supposedly pointed out that the PM has no authority to do so until after forming a new government, The Times of Israel reported.

Comment: So in Israeli law, it's legal to annex land, as long as there's a new government. Sounds like a government of liars and thieves pretending to have a justice system.

"I want to act on it immediately", Netanyahu said in a (Hebrew) video posted to Facebook. "Therefore I wanted to already bring it to the Knesset last week, [but] the attorney general said to me 'you can't because it is a transitional government'".

Netanyahu reportedly attempted to argue the point, but Mandelblit insisted he first needed to get a mandate from the nation. "So here I am asking for the mandate", Netanyahu noted.

Comment: In other words, Netanyahu is a soulless demagogue.

Comment: The Russian foreign ministry has responded to Netanyahu's pledge to violate international law:

"Moscow noted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement, which provoked a sharply negative reaction in the Arab world, about the intention to extend the sovereignty of Israel to the Jordan Valley. We share the concern about such plans of the Israeli leadership, whose implementation could lead to a sharp escalation of tension in the region and undermine hopes for a long-awaited peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours", the ministry said.

UNSG Gueterres is also concerned:

"The Secretary-General is concerned by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's statement declaring his intention, if elected, to annex the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea as a first step to applying Israeli sovereignty over all settlements and other areas in the occupied West Bank", the release said on Wednesday.

Guterres noted that the annexation of parts of the West Bank would "constitute a serious violation of international law".

The promotional video of US jets carpet-bombing an "ISIS infested" island in Iraq comes amid tensions between Washington and Baghdad, and may have more to do with that than with the supposedly long-defeated terror group.

The video, complete with dramatic music, shows F-15 as well as F-35 jets dropping what was said to be 80,000 pounds of munitions on Qanus Island, north of Baghdad. Operation Inherent Resolve officials said in a statement that the mission was intended to hamper the terrorist group's "ability to hide in thick vegetation" in the area.

Towards the end of the video, several Iraqi officers are shown watching the pillars of smoke rise up from the island, smiling approvingly as the US advisers accompanying them.

While Western media enthusiastically replayed the video-game style footage, hardly anyone gave the full context behind the bombastic air raid.

Former National Security Advisor and State Secretary Condoleeza Rice appeared on a late-night comedy show, calling for a continued US presence in Afghanistan, this time for apparently feminist reasons. She was swiftly called out.

After some de-rigeur Trump-bashing, host Stephen Colbert and Rice got down to the topic at hand: President Donald Trump's decision to host, and then cancel, a meeting with the Afghan Taliban at Camp David last week.

We must believe lies as truth or face the consequences. I am not sure if I can assimilate into the Brave New World.
