Puppet Masters
The killing of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi by American special forces on Saturday was undoubtedly a foreign policy triumph for Trump, deflecting the criticism that followed his withdrawal of troops from northern Syria and compounding his claim to have "obliterated his caliphate, 100 percent."
But no sooner had Trump taken his victory lap than he told reporters he would be "leaving soldiers to secure the oil." So much for bringing the boys home.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed the US' new priority on Monday, telling reporters that US troops and armored vehicles are already en route to the oilfields of Deir ez-Zor, where they have been asked to "respond with overwhelming military force against any group" threatening them - including Russia and the Syrian government.

Attorney Sydney Powell follows Michael Flynn from the the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse in Washington on June 24, 2019.
She charges them with not only withholding exculpatory evidence, but with aiding and abetting the alteration of official government documents - called 302 forms.
The Ghost Of Andrew Weissmann
Although the name Brandon Van Grack is the one that appears in all of these Flynn filings as counsel for the government, the person Sidney Powell is actually locked into legal warfare with here is Andrew Weissmann.
That's because Weissmann was the person who was actually crafting the government's strategy in pursuing this case against Gen. Flynn.
Comment: From The Conservative Treehouse:
We're going to go through the primary filing and four exhibits to the evidence Attorney Sidney Powell is delivering to Judge Emmet Sullivan which contain some explosive discoveries. Toplines including:[See supporting excerpts and full court filings here]
- Lisa Page edited the Flynn 302's, then forgot when questioned by DOJ officials, then re-remembered when shown her texts.
- The 302's themselves were written with lies that do not match notes taken during the interview.
- The felony leaker of the Flynn-Kislyak phone call is named (James Baker).
- New texts from Page and Strzok that highlight the entrapment plan.
- ODNI James Clapper telling WaPo reporter Ignatius to "take the kill shot on Flynn".
- The purposeful use of Judge Contreras to take the December 1st 2017 plea agreement; and much, much more.
Attorney Sidney Powell has really done an excellent job putting this motion together with a mountain of incontrovertible supportive material to highlight how her client, Michael Flynn, was set-up.
If you take the time to read the primary 37-page motion, and then review the material that supports every assertion within the motion, you will be hard-pressed not to come to the conclusion that Mike Flynn was a victim of seriously unethical, borderline criminal, prosecutorial conduct.
If Judge Sullivan accepts this motion and goes through all of this material I think there's a pretty good chance he will dismiss this case. The next round of arguments within his courtroom are going to be very, very interesting.
Phenomenal job by Ms. Sidney Powell. Exceptional.
The tweet is part of the Ukrainegate impeachment saga, which the Democrats have been focusing on ever since Russiagate fizzled out. The allegation is that Trump pressured Zelensky into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden over his role in ending a corruption probe into a Ukrainian energy company where his son sat on the board - and that Trump made US aid to Kiev dependent on such an investigation.

"I want to say that the Ministry of National Defence announced on 23 October that there was no need to launch a new offensive in the area where "Peace Spring" was conducted. This statement was made after reaching an agreement with Russia. It is currently difficult to forecast how the joint patrolling will be conducted; this will be decided as a result of negotiations between our country's militaries. So I would not want to say anything misleading now. We will have an understanding of how this will be done in the coming days", Samsar said in an interview.
As we noted in February 2019, candidate Trump's unpaid volunteer George Papadopoulos was spied on by the Deep State through an individual named Joseph Mifsud.
Mifsud's purpose was to plant information with Papadopoulos (namely that the Russians had Hillary's emails) so that the same information could be retrieved from Papadopoulos and the Deep State could say that the Trump campaign knew Russia had Hillary's emails.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the local Google unit did not tell users of its Android operating system for almost two years that they needed to switch off two settings - not one - if they did not want the company to keep their information.
"Google's conduct caused users to understand that personal data about their location was not being obtained ... by Google when in fact personal data was being obtained," the ACCC wrote in a Federal Court filing on Tuesday, which it published on its website.
The so-called "pink tide" is a period in Latin America that peaked in 2011 as it saw Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela all ruled by left-wing governments. However, the tide began to turn back as Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and others returned to the neoliberal order in recent years. However, the political pendulum, which has been moving to the right is seemingly going back to the left.
The chaotic events in the Chilean capital of Santiago, along with the brutal reaction of security forces that has seen 19 people dead, is state-backed violence not seen since the years of the Pinochet dictatorship. The mobilization of the Chilean armed forces is not a sign of strength, but evidence of a political panic that permeates all across Latin America. In the face of President Sebastián Piñera, the whole neoliberal model of the IMF that Washington has consistently exported to the region since the installation of Pinochet, is once against being challenged by the people of Latin America.
Her face was a progression of sneers and imperious indifference; she addressed Julian with an arrogance that reminded me of a magistrate presiding over apartheid South Africa's Race Classification Board. When Julian struggled to speak, he couldn't get words out, even stumbling over his name and date of birth.
When he spoke truth and when his barrister spoke, Baraister contrived boredom; when the prosecuting barrister spoke, she was attentive. She had nothing to do; it was demonstrably preordained. In the table in front of us were a handful of American officials, whose directions to the prosecutor were carried by his junior; back and forth this young woman went, delivering instructions.
The judge watched this outrage without a comment. It reminded me of a newsreel of a show trial in Stalin's Moscow; the difference was that Soviet show trials were broadcast. Here, the state broadcaster, the BBC, blacked it out, as did the other mainstream channels.
Having ignored Julian's barrister's factual description of how the CIA had run a Spanish security firm that spied on him in the Ecuadorean embassy, she didn't yawn, but her disinterest was as expressive. She then denied Julian's lawyers any more time to prepare their case - even though their client was prevented in prison from receiving legal documents and other tools with which to defend himself.
Her knee in the groin was to announce that the next court hearing would be at remote Woolwich, which adjoins Belmarsh prison and has few seats for the public. This will ensure isolation and be as close to a secret trial as it's possible to get. Did this happen in the home of the Magna Carta? Yes, but who knew?
"The withdrawal is taking place right now, we are beginning [the process] today," Prystayko said at an investment forum in the city of Mariupol, on October 29, adding that the process was delayed due to preparations by the OSCE mission.
Prystayko also said that after the withdrawal process in Zolote is over, Kyiv will start withdrawing its forces from the nearby town of Petrivske.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who rose to the presidency earlier this year on promises to end the conflict, accepted the withdrawal plan, known as the Steinmeier Formula, earlier in October.
The Steinmeier Formula lays the groundwork for reinvigorating the larger peace deals known loosely as the Minsk Accords, and the first major international summit on the Ukraine conflict in three years.
