China: Humble Cabbage Becomes Art

Image
Artist Ju Duoqi's works Cabbage Monroe and The Dream of the Tofu are displayed in Beijing
Ju Duoqi stocks up on cabbages in the Beijing vegetable market and then transforms the humble vegetables into works of art depicting beautiful women -- that sometimes leave very little to the imagination.

The 38-year-old said she started using cabbages in her work five years ago when she was looking for a way to bring her art together with everyday life.

"Cabbages come in different sizes and colors. Under different light and in different contexts, I can make cabbages into various forms and take photos of them that produce different moods," Ju said.

She often spends hours in the market picking out cabbages that reflect the curves of a woman's body, or that can be cut to make limbs or other accessories, using a combination of round cabbage and longer, slim "celery" cabbage.

Back in her studio on Beijing's outskirts, Ju uses toothpicks and knives to reshape the cabbage leaves to represent different parts of the body -- carving tiny hands, say, or using individual leaves for effect.

London boaters craving a cold treat on a sunny day might not to have to head ashore to find what they seek. The HMS Flake 99 is the world's first amphibious ice cream truck.

The truck was commissioned by Cadbury in honor of Britain's National Ice Cream Week and has been driving (sailing?) around the Thames touting its wares. The Flake 99 is named for an ice cream treat and may soon be traveling to vacation beaches or to Venice to bring ice cream cones to gondola-riding lovers.

U.S. Mom Gives Birth to Baby Weighing More Than 14 Pounds

Even if he doesn't cry, people may call Matthew Anthony Maldanado Big Baby for a long time.

He came into the world a couple weeks ago weighing 6.4 kg (14 pounds, 3.8 ounces), almost double the average weight of most newborns.

"My wife was in labour for two days," says dad Jose to KSBWTV. Doctors told the soon-to-be parents to expect a big baby, but no one believed Matthew would be that big. Mom Emily delivered her bundle of joy following a C-section.

"There was this absolutely incredible number so I actually thought they had transposed," says Matthew's doctor, Dr. Roberta Bruni. She believes Matthew is the largest baby ever born in California.

However, the largest baby ever born was birthed by Canadian Anna Bates in 1879. Bates, herself was just shy 2.3 metres (7'6") and weighted about 180 kg (400 pounds). Her baby boy, who unfortunately only lived 11 hours, weighed 10.8 kg (23.1 pounds) at birth.

Church Cancelled Due to Lack of God

church
© UnknownThe Church of Holy Christ In Heaven will soon change its name to the Church of Imaginary Make-Believe Land.
The South - Parishioners of Pastor Theo Leobald's First Congregational Church of Holy Christ In Heaven will not meet next Sunday morning for a coffee social and morning Bible study as they do every week, gathering in fellowship and offering thanks and praise to God on high. The reason for the cancellation? Simply the fact that, according to Leobald, God does not now, has never, and will never exist.

When asked why he is convinced of God's nonexistence, Leobald became visibly irritated with reporters.

"What're you, an illiterate peasant? Aren't you familiar with 20th century thinking at all? Christ, read a book, or maybe just think about the idea for a minute. Pretty ridiculous, huh?" he said.

When pressed, however, he sighed heavily, and explained that thousands of years ago, tribes of nomadic desert peoples made up God because, being incapable of scientific reasoning due to caveman-like existences, they had no other way of making sense of things like sunshine, rocks and pork-transmitted trichinosis.

"They made it all up, and they were ignorant, unwashed, half-naked pre-historic barbarians," Leobald said. "So who are you gonna believe: Carl Sagan, and the pantheon of the world's greatest scientific and intellectual minds, or some guy who measured wealth by how many goats he had?"

US: Awesome YouTube Lip Dub Proves Grand Rapids is Awesome

In an epic single-shot video lasting almost 10 minutes and featuring more than 3,000 people, "marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire," and a helicopter takeoff, a so-called "dying" America city spanked a statistically-dying magazine, and entertained the Internet, too.

Grand Rapids shut down a good chunk of its downtown earlier this week to film its response to a Newsweek piece from January, which listed the Michigan city as No. 10 on a list of America's "dying" cities. Set to a live recording of Don McLean's "American Pie," the city's sassy citizens prove their town is very much alive via a massively multi-performer, lip-sync video done in a single, unedited take, what's known on the InterWebs as a "lip dub."

Fortune Found Down Back of Old Sofa

£50 notes
The manager of a Warwickshire charity shop found nearly £1,500 stuffed down the back of a donated sofa.

Karen Wilson, of Rugby, discovered the money in an envelope between the cushions of a two-seater sofa.

It dropped out of the back of the green sofa and contained £1,305 in bank notes, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Relatives of the late owner of the sofa were traced thanks to a Gift Aid form they had filled in and were delighted to hear about the money.

UK: Police Hunt for "Goldilocks"

British police appealed for help Friday in tracing a suspected burglar they have dubbed "Goldilocks" because he breaks into houses, eats food and then has a sleep.

Essex detectives said they were trying to trace Jesse Dobinson who is suspected of carrying out two burglaries at a house in Wickford, northeast of London, in February and March.

"On both occasions beds in the property were slept in and food eaten before items, including electrical goods, were stolen," police said in a statement.

Unlike the fairytale character, Dobinson is also wanted in connection with an assault and a knifepoint robbery.

Liger Cubs Nursed by Dog in China's Xixiakou Zoo

Two liger cubs - a cross between a male lion and a female tiger - are being nursed by a dog at a zoo in Weihai, eastern China.

Four cubs were born at the Xixiakou Wildlife Zoo earlier this month but only two survived.

The mother stopped feeding the cubs after a few days so the dog, which had recently had its own puppies, was enlisted to help.

Ligers are extremely rare and are thought to only be born in captivity.
