Best of the Web: Bertrand Russell's Last Message

This statement on the Middle East was dated 31st January, 1970, and was read on 3rd February, the day after Bertrand Russell's death, to an International Conference of Parliamentarians meeting in Cairo.

The latest phase of the undeclared war in the Middle East is based upon a profound miscalculation. The bombing raids deep into Egyptian territory will not persuade the civilian population to surrender, but will stiffen their resolve to resist. This is the lesson of all aerial bombardment.

The Vietnamese who have endured years of American heavy bombing have responded not by capitulation but by shooting down more enemy aircraft. In 1940 my own fellow countrymen resisted Hitler's bombing raids with unprecedented unity and determination. For this reason, the present Israeli attacks will fail in their essential purpose, but at the same time they must be condemned vigorously throughout the world.

The development of the crisis in the Middle East is both dangerous and instructive. For over 20 years Israel has expanded by force of arms. After every stage in this expansion Israel has appealed to "reason" and has suggested "negotiations". This is the traditional role of the imperial power, because it wishes to consolidate with the least difficulty what it has already taken by violence. Every new conquest becomes the new basis of the proposed negotiation from strength, which ignores the injustice of the previous aggression. The aggression committed by Israel must be condemned, not only because no state has the right to annexe foreign territory, but because every expansion is an experiment to discover how much more aggression the world will tolerate.

Best of the Web: Socially-Conservative Value Judgments linked to Anti-Social Personality Traits

liberal conservative
A new study by Marcus Arvan, PhD, appearing in the peer-reviewed research journal, Neuroethics, confirms and extends upon the results of an earlier study linking socially conservative views to three anti-social personality traits: Machiavellianism (deception), narcissism (overinflated sense of self-worth) and psychopathy (absence of guilt or remorse).

Arvan's two studies together suggest that socially conservative views are between 5 to 30 times more likely to be related to anti-social traits than socially liberal views.

Arvan's earlier study ("Bad News for Conservatives? Moral Judgments and the Dark Triad Personality Traits: A Correlational Study," published in Neuroethics) found these three anti-social traits to be related to conservative views on the death penalty, gay marriage, free markets, the right to go to war against UN resolutions and detention of suspected terrorists without trial. The study found no significant relationships for liberal judgments. Because Arvan utilized very stringent statistical tests, the statistical probability that his results were incorrect is less than 1 in 100,000.

Best of the Web: Ayn Rand: A Manifesto for Psychopaths

Ayn Rand
© AlterNet
Ayn Rand's ideas have become the Marxism of the new right.

It has a fair claim to be the ugliest philosophy the post-war world has produced. Selfishness, it contends, is good, altruism evil, empathy and compassion are irrational and destructive. The poor deserve to die; the rich deserve unmediated power. It has already been tested, and has failed spectacularly and catastrophically. Yet the belief system constructed by Ayn Rand, who died 30 years ago today, has never been more popular or influential.

Rand was a Russian from a prosperous family who emigrated to the United States. Through her novels (such as Atlas Shrugged) and her non-fiction (such as The Virtue of Selfishness1) she explained a philosophy she called Objectivism. This holds that the only moral course is pure self-interest. We owe nothing, she insists, to anyone, even to members of our own families. She described the poor and weak as "refuse" and "parasites", and excoriated anyone seeking to assist them. Apart from the police, the courts and the armed forces, there should be no role for government: no social security, no public health or education, no public infrastructure or transport, no fire service, no regulations, no income tax.

Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, depicts a United States crippled by government intervention, in which heroic millionaires struggle against a nation of spongers. The millionaires, whom she portrays as Atlas holding the world aloft, withdraw their labour, with the result that the nation collapses. It is rescued, through unregulated greed and selfishness, by one of the heroic plutocrats, John Galt.

Best of the Web: Belgium's X Files: Dutroux Affair Uncovered Pedophile Networks

Image
The White March: Belgium ground to a halt in 1996 as masses of people came very close to realising that they were ruled by Psychopaths in Power.
This programme first aired Sunday 5th May 2002 on BBC2 at 7.15p.m.. It was part of the Correspondent series that reported on various issues of public interest, with one programme entirely devoted to each issue selected. The issue focused on here is the Dutroux paedophile scandal that broke in Belgium in 1996. See here for basic background information.

Foremost in my mind is the notion that this certainly isn't a Belgian phenomenon. People need to wake up to the fact that this is occurring in many countries. It is primarily used as a tool to blackmail and control politicians, judges, public servants, successful businessmen, the wealthy, media personalities, celebrities, and other influential citizens etc.. Literally anyone they can get with a seat at the table of power. In a nutshell, it all boils down to corruption and the subversion of democracy. Key questions left unaddressed are who is ultimately responsible for all this and does it, to some extent at least, link up on an international level?

I hope that everyone watching this can take the time to rate and comment. It is well worth watching all 3 parts, as new areas are examined and more explosive revelations are made. This is especially the case in part 3. Then, please help to copy, spread and publicise this video in your social networks as much as possible for educational purposes. Why not make it a 'Favourite' on your channel and give it a special mention? What YOU do certainly DOES make a difference. As far as I'm aware, this video hasn't been online in full up until now. There were a few clips floating around, but that's all. It's very well made and may help wake some people up that don't know about this stuff. The programme was 45 minutes long, so I have had to upload it in 3 parts.

The copyright for this programme is held by the BBC. However, I am not uploading this video with any incentive of profit and am claiming fair use for educational purposes. I very much doubt that anyone would even dream of trying to prevent the exposure of organised paedophilia at a state level anyway, unless of course they were involved in it...

Government budgets at every level now include allocations aimed at fighting an ephemeral "War on Terror" in the United States.

At the height of the Occupy Wall Street evictions, it seemed as though some diminutive version of "shock and awe" had stumbled from Baghdad, Iraq, to Oakland, California. American police forces had been "militarized," many commentators worried, as though the firepower and callous tactics on display were anomalies, surprises bursting upon us from nowhere.

There should have been no surprise. Those flash grenades exploding in Oakland and the sound cannons on New York's streets simply opened small windows onto a national policing landscape long in the process of militarization -- a bleak domestic no man's land marked by tanks and drones, robot bomb detectors, grenade launchers, tasers, and most of all, interlinked video surveillance cameras and information databases growing quietly on unobtrusive server farms everywhere.

The ubiquitous fantasy of "homeland security," pushed hard by the federal government in the wake of 9/11, has been widely embraced by the public. It has also excited intense weapons- and techno-envy among police departments and municipalities vying for the latest in armor and spy equipment.

Best of the Web: Santorum: 'Higher-income people don't have to pay taxes'

Rick Santorum
© CNN
Republican presidential Rick Santorum is advising President Barack Obama not to raise taxes on the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans because "higher-income people don't have to pay taxes if they don't want to."

"Once we defeat Barack Obama this economy will start turning around," the former Pennsylvania senator told a crowd in Miamisburg, Ohio. "Because you'll know you have someone in there who's going to unshackle businesses, reduce rates, not increase them. The president's promised increased taxes if he's re-elected."

"All he wants to do to solve the deficit problem is increase taxes on people, particularly higher-income people," Santorum continued. "You see, that sounds very populist. Go after the 1 percent. It's interesting because the British just did this. They went after the 1 percent in Britain. They dramatically increased taxes on the highest-income Brits. And guess what? It failed."

Best of the Web: 'Exceptionalism' in America

American politicians forever talk about the nation's "exceptionalism," a special greatness that sets the U.S.A. apart from all others. But this jingoism requires whitewashing much of U.S. history and ignoring much of the present, too, says Lawrence Davidson.

Everyone wants to be exceptional, to be special, to be great at something. Parents spend a lot of time assuring their children that they are indeed exceptional, even though they often know that the their offspring will spend their working lives selling mattresses or cars.

When it comes to individuals there is a very wide range of achievements that can make you stand out. Everyone can be exceptional in some way or other. Yet it is not only individuals who need to feel themselves exceptional or great.

Best of the Web: Open Source Mozilla Firefox Now 'Tracking the Trackers'

Collusion by Firefox tracking the trackers.
Collusion is a new add-on by Mozilla to their popular Firefox browser, which enables users to see who is tracking them on the 'net.

Everyone has heard that Big Brother is tracking their navigation on the internet. Now users have a chance to find out who is doing the tracking.

RT advises that Firefox is the second most popular browser in use by web surfers. The owners are now introducing the Collusion add-on, which will allow users to monitor how their actions and movements are tracked and shared by various websites. It will show, in real time, how that data creates a spider-web of interaction between companies and other trackers.
