Best of the Web: Elderly Hardest Hit by Foreclosure, 600K over Age of 50 Face Losing a Home

The elderly are among the hardest hit by the U.S. housing crisis, with 600,000 Americans over the age of 50 facing foreclosure.

The American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) found that to date, more than 1.5 million Americans have already lost their homes - and the elderly are increasingly more likely to join them.

Those over the age of 80 are in the worst condition, with one out of every 30 facing foreclosure. Often having burnt through their savings, receiving an inadequate pension, and dealing with the loss of a deceased spouse's retirement benefits, the elderly struggle to make their mortgage payments.

"These are people who in many instances have never missed a payment in 20 years,"said Rep. Elijah Cummings."You see grown men crying because of the potential loss of a home."

Fifty Years of US Targeted 'Kill Lists': From the Phoenix Program to Predator Drones
"A broad-gauged program of targeted assassination has now displaced counterinsurgency as the prevailing expression of the American way of war." - Andrew Bacevich [1]
This spring the US drone killing program has come out of the closet. Attorney General Eric Holder publicly defended the drone killing of an American citizen [2], while Obama's counter terrorism czar John Brennan publicly explained and justified the target killing program [3]. And a New York Times article by Jo Becker and Scott Shane chronicled Obama's personal role in vetting a secret "Kill List." [4]

Best of the Web: Was Arafat murdered?

Murdered by Israel? Yasser Arafat
Most Palestinians, whether they supported their late leader Yasser Arafat or not, were in agreement that he did not die of natural causes. They believed he was murdered by Israel or its agents.

But are Palestinians justified in blaming Israel for his death?

French doctors treating Arafat did not issue a conclusive report identifying the cause of his illness. The French public medical report pointed to the destruction of red blood cells as a reason for his death, but did not identify the cause of the red cell failure.

According to an Al Jazeera report, tests by scientists at the Institute of Radiation Physics in Lausanne, Switzerland, suggested that traces found on Arafat's stained underwear and other personal belongings pointed to an "unexplained, elevated amount of unsupported polonium-210", which could explain his red cell abnormality.

The Swiss lab is the same medical institute that uncovered traces of the radioactive isotope polonium-210 on former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko's belongings.

The Russian dissident died in 2006 following a meeting with Russian officials after ingesting tea laced with the substance.

After scanning Arafat's belongings, lab officials found an "unexplained level of polonium", concluding the possibility that he died of "poisoning".

Israel is the only nation in the region with a proven capability to produce polonium-210.

Best of the Web: People Power! US Citizens Journalism Killing Mainstream

A recent Gallup poll shows that an all time low of on only 20% of the public trusts the news as citizen journalism continues to rise.

Bias and bungled reporting on US news networks are behind plummeting audience numbers, according to the Gallup Poll.

As far as the 20% who do still trust the news I would suppose they simply either don't have internet access or when they go online the don't dare stray to far from sites owned by the corporations that own the corporate media.

For anyone who happens to land here that still believes the news is trustworthy these will instantly make you non-believers as well: Caught: Staged CNN Syria Interviews Faked By Activist Danny and Wag The Dog - Media Caught Faking Syria News Stories.

Of course that isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

RT reports on the Gallup Poll and the continual decline of the corporate media in the video below which also looks at a cutting-edge project that's encouraging ordinary Americans to drive our country's news agenda instead.

Best of the Web: US geoengineers funded by Bill Gates to spray sun-reflecting chemicals into atmosphere to artificially cool the planet

Experiment in New Mexico will try to establish the possibility of cooling the planet by dispersing sulphate aerosols

Two Harvard engineers are to spray sun-reflecting chemical particles into the atmosphere to artificially cool the planet, using a balloon flying 80,000 feet over Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

The field experiment in solar geoengineering aims to ultimately create a technology to replicate the observed effects of volcanoes that spew sulphates into the stratosphere, using sulphate aerosols to bounce sunlight back to space and decrease the temperature of the Earth.

David Keith, one of the investigators, has argued that solar geoengineering could be an inexpensive method to slow down global warming, but other scientists warn that it could have unpredictable, disastrous consequences for the Earth's weather systems and food supplies. Environmental groups fear that the push to make geoengineering a "plan B" for climate change will undermine efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Keith, who manages a multimillion dollar geoengineering research fund provided by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, previously commissioned a study by a US aerospace company that made the case for the feasibility of large-scale deployment of solar geoengineering technologies.

Comment: It's interesting that The Guardian chose the above image to go with this story. Sun halos have been appearing in greater numbers in recent years, possibly due to an increase in ice crystals in our rapidly shrinking and cooling atmosphere. By associating this natural phenomenon with a man-made (well, psychopath-made) project, they are trying to implant in readers' minds the suggestion that the increase of weird (but natural) phenomena in our atmosphere are the result of their kooky scientific experiments. They're not. They're the result of major Earth Changes underway. At least when the Ice Age comes, people will know who to blame.

Best of the Web: Fireball starts wildfire in Reno, Nevada

Firefighters say they are still trying to determine the cause of a fire that broke out on Desert Way between Rio Rangler and Alexander Lake just before 11:00 p.m. Sunday night. Witnesses tell News 4 they saw an aircraft crash at the site of the fire, but firefighters would not say if they found any pieces of aircraft and they suspect it could have been a meteor. Firefighters say airport officials have confirmed all planes are accounted for. The fire was contained at one acre. An investigation into the cause is being conducted.

Best of the Web: The Syrian opposition: who's doing the talking?

Image
© ReutersThe director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdulrahman, speaks on the phone in his home in Coventry on December 6, 2011.

The media have been too passive when it comes to Syrian opposition sources, without scrutinising their backgrounds and their political connections. Time for a closer look ...

A nightmare is unfolding across Syria, in the homes of al-Heffa and the streets of Houla. And we all know how the story ends: with thousands of soldiers and civilians killed, towns and families destroyed, and President Assad beaten to death in a ditch.

This is the story of the Syrian war, but there is another story to be told. A tale less bloody, but nevertheless important. This is a story about the storytellers: the spokespeople, the "experts on Syria", the "democracy activists". The statement makers. The people who "urge" and "warn" and "call for action".

It's a tale about some of the most quoted members of the Syrian opposition and their connection to the Anglo-American opposition creation business. The mainstream news media have, in the main, been remarkably passive when it comes to Syrian sources: billing them simply as "official spokesmen" or "pro-democracy campaigners" without, for the most part, scrutinising their statements, their backgrounds or their political connections.

Best of the Web: How Poor Kids Are Made to Fight Wars for the Rich

Image
© Teddy Wade, U.S. ArmySpecialist Jason Palmer prepares for takeoff. (Tikrit, Iraq, April 30, 2006)
We condition the poor and the working class to go to war. We promise them honor, status, glory, and adventure. We promise boys they will become men. We hold these promises up against the dead-end jobs of small-town life, the financial dislocations, credit card debt, bad marriages, lack of health insurance, and dread of unemployment. The military is the call of the Sirens, the enticement that has for generations seduced young Americans working in fast food restaurants or behind the counters of Walmarts to fight and die for war profiteers and elites.

The poor embrace the military because every other cul-de-sac in their lives breaks their spirit and their dignity. Pick up Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front or James Jones's From Here to Eternity. Read Henry IV. Turn to the Iliad. The allure of combat is a trap, a ploy, an old, dirty game of deception in which the powerful, who do not go to war, promise a mirage to those who do.

I saw this in my own family. At the age of ten I was given a scholarship to a top New England boarding school. I spent my adolescence in the schizophrenic embrace of the wealthy, on the playing fields and in the dorms and classrooms that condition boys and girls for privilege, and came back to my working-class relations in the depressed former mill towns in Maine. I traveled between two universes: one where everyone got chance after chance after chance, where connections and money and influence almost guaranteed that you would not fail; the other where no one ever got a second try. I learned at an early age that when the poor fall no one picks them up, while the rich stumble and trip their way to the top.
