Best of the Web: 'Unprecedented brazenness': Trump and Lavrov in the Oval Office sends US media into hysterics

'Something is rotten with the state of Denmark', or if not Denmark then certainly the United States of America. It's the only conclusion one can draw from the way the absolutely normal is nowadays treated as the most extraordinary drama.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump met Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. It's about as normal a diplomatic event as one could possibly imagine, but it caused much of the American commentariat to go into a collective meltdown.

'Trump welcoming Russia's top diplomat to the Oval Office is one of his most brazen moves yet,' declared the Washington Post, which makes you think that Trump really needs to step up his game on the brazenness front. The Post isn't alone in thinking this way, however. What one might call the 'liberal' TV channels leapt on the story too, dragging in some representatives of the American security apparatus to ram home the point (there was a time when liberals regarded the FBI and CIA with suspicion, but such days are apparently long gone).

Comment: Morons, we're ruled by utter morons.

Best of the Web: First Minister warns Johnson: Scotland 'cannot be imprisoned' in UK

Nicola Sturgeon
© Russell Cheyne / ReutersNicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party
Scotland "cannot be imprisoned in the union against its will" by the UK government, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The Scottish first minister says the SNP's success in the general election gives her a mandate to hold a new referendum on independence.

However, UK ministers are opposed to such a move with Michael Gove saying the vote in 2014 should be "respected".

Ms Sturgeon told the BBC that if the UK was to continue as a union, "it can only be by consent".

She told The Andrew Marr Show that the UK government would be "completely wrong" to think saying no to a referendum would be the end of the matter, adding: "It's a fundamental point of democracy - you can't hold Scotland in the union against its will."

Comment: RT adds
Johnson and his Tory government have stated that they will not permit another vote on Scotland leaving the union, but Sturgeon - whose Scottish National Party (SNP) won 48 of Scotland's 59 seats in the UK parliament in the recent snap general election - said that the matter isn't up to the prime minister. The pro-independence first minister argued that if Johnson is so sure that preserving the union is the best course of action, "he should be confident enough to make that case and allow people to decide."

Scotland held an independence referendum in 2014, but the motion was rejected by voters.
Actually, there were some serious questions around the the vote, with many reports of irregularities. Ms. Sturgeon may well be right in her call for another referendum.

Best of the Web: Peter Hitchens on fresh evidence that UN watchdog suppressed report casting doubt on Assad gas attack

Douma faked attack
Children in Douma who are clearly not suffering from an kind of chemical poisoning but are, instead, being used as actors in a staged scene.
The global chemical weapons watchdog is facing renewed questions after fresh details emerged about how it suppressed the findings of its own inspectors who raised serious doubts about an alleged poison gas attack in Syria.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that a senior official at the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) demanded the 'removal of all traces' of a document which undermined claims that gas cylinders had been dropped from the air - a key element of the 'evidence' that the Syrian regime was responsible.

Unconfirmed reports and videos showing the bodies of adults and children foaming at the mouth in Douma, a rebel-held Damascus suburb, shocked the world in April 2018.

A week later, without waiting for proof that chemical weapons had been used, Britain, France and the US launched a retaliatory missile strike, the biggest Western military action of the eight-year war.

It was only after the blitz that a team of OPCW inspectors - non-political scientists - were able to visit Douma to investigate the attack, later detailing their conclusions in a report.

Last month, The Mail on Sunday revealed details of a leaked email - whose authenticity has since been verified by the OPCW - which protested that the scientists' original interim report had been censored to change its meaning.

Fernando Arias, Director-General of the OPCW, has insisted that he stands by 'the independent, professional conclusions' of the organisation's final report which was released in March.

Comment: WikiLeaks has released a new set of documents including the ones Hitchens references in the article above: Aside from the Daily Mail, the only other mainstream western publication which has covered the story is the Italian la Repubblica:

The Newsweek journalist whose piece was suppressed by his editors published the following: Lies, Newsweek and Control of the Media Narrative: First-Hand Account. Moon of Alabama provides some excerpts, including on Haddad's editor Dimi Reider:
I glanced at his resume and was honored to be working with such an accomplished foreign affairs journalist. I had genuinely hoped to build a closer relationship to him.

That was why I was so bewildered when he flatly refused to publish the OPCW revelations. Surely any editor worth their salt would see this as big? Of course, I understood that the implications of such a piece would be substantial and not easy to report — it was the strongest evidence of lies about Syria to date — but surely most educated people could see this coming? Other evidence was growing by the day.

But no. As the earlier messages showed, there was no desire to report these revelations, regardless of how strong the evidence appeared to be. Dimi was simply happy to defer to Bellingcat — a clearly dubious organization as others have taken the time to address, such as here and here — instead of allowing journalists who are more than capable of doing their own research to do their job.

It was this realization that made me start to question Dimi. When I looked a little deeper, he was the missing piece.

MoA comments: "It turns out that Dimi Reider is a creature trained by the Council of Foreign Relations, the Wall Street's Think Tank, and was the founder and editor of a magazine funded by the Rockefeller Brother's Fund. He is a member of the insider club."

The U.S. government, in an ugly alliance with those the profit the most from war, has its tentacles in every part of the mediaimposters, with ties to the U.S. State Department, sit in newsrooms all over the world. Editors, with no apparent connections to the member's club, have done nothing to resist. Together, they filter out what can or cannot be reported. Inconvenient stories are completely blocked. As a result, journalism is quickly dying. America is regressing because it lacks the truth.

Best of the Web: ABC's Epstein story didn't kill itself

Epstein and Robach

Multimillionaire predator Jeffrey Epstein died in suspicious circumstances at a Manhattan correctional facility on August 10. The wealthy and powerful New York financier, a convicted sex offender, stands accused by dozens of women and girls of trafficking, rape and sexual abuse. He was an enormously influential and well-connected man who counted as friends billionaire business owners, Hollywood stars, British royals, and even top media figures like Katie Couric and Charlie Rose — with some of his associates falling under suspicion of condoning or even participating in a pedophile ring.

"I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy," said fellow tycoon Donald Trump (New York, 10/28/02), adding: "It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." Former President Bill Clinton was also close with Epstein.

New York (10/28/02) hyped Jeffrey Epstein as a “relentless brain” with a “keen eye for the ladies.”

Best of the Web: German MPs in uproar over US' Nord Stream 2 sanction threats, call for retaliation

Nord Stream
© Nord Stream AG
As the US braces to slap sanctions on European firms building the last leg of the Russia-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a senior MP in Berlin argues that formal protests don't work anymore - but a strong response could.

Germany may follow America's lead in foreign policy and defense expenditures, but it is less submissive when it comes to energy security, which is sacrosanct for Europe's economic powerhouse. This week, US lawmakers introduced a bill tightening the chokehold on Germany's flagship energy project it jointly runs with Russia, targeting European companies laying underwater tubes for the much talked-about Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

The proposed sanctions package, yet to be approved by the Senate and the president, stipulates asset freezes and revocation of US visas for Nord Stream contractors. And Berlin doesn't much like it.

Comment: Germany can sorely afford to suffer the threats and the meddling of the US for much longer:

Best of the Web: The ideas that bring harm and weaken the minds and emotions of my generation

A world immersed in paranoid concerns of safety distorts one's outlook, which is detrimental to the ability to function and thrive.

It's a tough time for Generation Z. Mental health problems, specifically mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, are skyrocketing. Gen Z is the least likely to report good or excellent mental health and the most likely to report poor or fair mental health. Suicide rates for US teens and young adults are the highest ever.

As a 23-year-old Gen-Zer who has dealt with these issues personally and has seen the impact on fellow friends and loved ones, it breaks my heart.

On the path of bettering my mental health and trying to help others, my journey has led me to seek explanations on why things have gotten so bad, and I found a compelling hypothesis in the work of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and legal scholar Greg Lukianoff.

In their co-authored book, The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, Haidt and Lukianoff examine Gen Z's mental health problem. They argue that youths have been immersed in a world characterized by paranoid concerns of safety, which distorts their thoughts and is detrimental to their mental well-being.

"Many university students are learning to think in distorted ways, and this increases their likelihood of becoming fragile, anxious, and easily hurt," they say.

Four people, including a police officer and three people believed to be civilians, were killed during an hours-long standoff and firefight Tuesday between two suspects and law enforcement in Jersey City, New Jersey, authorities said. Two suspects were also killed, Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly told reporters.

The fallen officer was identified as Det. Joseph Seals, a 15-year veteran of the department, Kelly said. Seals was part of a statewide anti-violence unit, and Kelly credited him with removing "dozens and dozens" of handguns from the street.

"We believe he was killed while trying to interdict these bad guys," Kelly told reporters, adding, "Once again, this is all being investigated."

The officer who was killed is believed to have been ambushed, according to a law enforcement source.

Comment: Dayum, that was crazy. Even for the USA.

Gangsters at work?

They're sure quick to rule out terrorism...

UPDATES 11 Dec

The gunfire lasted FOUR HOURS, and HUNDREDS of rounds were fired. Altogether, 6 people were killed, including 'the two suspects'. Some media suspects say there was a third suspect, but no word about what happened to him.

Today it emerges that the crime scene where the major shooting scene took place was a Jewish kosher store, located next to a synagogue. Three of the victims were Jews, part of a community of Brooklyn Jews who had only recently relocated there.

Jewish outlet Forward reports that the kosher store "serves as the de facto social center of an embryonic Hasidic community in the town."

Initially, the media and police said this was not a terror attack/hate crime, but 24 hours later, that tune is changing.

What's clear is that the police response - including snipers on rooftops - was MASSIVE relative to the 'accidental intervention of a suspect wanted for murder' they claimed first motivated a police response.

We suspect the authorities were tipped off about something major, but for some reason they're playing this down for now.

RT has a rundown of the timeline, with tweets and videos. After shooting and killing Seals, the suspects drove away, chased by police, who followed them to the kosher store where the rest of the shooting apparently went down. Jersey City's mayor said there is reason to believe the shop was deliberately targeted:
"Based on our initial investigation (which is ongoing) we now believe the active shooters targeted the location they attacked," the mayor said on Twitter late Tuesday. "Due to an excess of caution the community may see additional police resources in the days/weeks ahead. We have no indication there are any further threats."
The shooters have been identified as David Anderson and Francine Graham, with Anderson at least a "one time" member of the "Black Hebrew Israelites" (you may remember these folks from the "smirking MAGA hat kid" controversy - they were the loonies harassing the Covington students).

Anderson had apparently posted anti-Jewish and anti-police messages on social media:
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said Wednesday that the pair of gun-wielding attackers were captured on CCTV footage "slowly" rolling up to the Jersey City Kosher Supermarket in the Greenville neighborhood in a van before they stopped in front, "calmly opened the door with two long rifles" and "began firing from the street" into the store.

A note with religious writing was recovered by investigators from inside the stolen U-Haul van that the shooters were in, sources said.
UPDATE Dec 13

RT reports that the incident is now being treated as an 'act of domestic terrorism motivated by anti-Semitism and police hatred':
The investigation into the shooting at JC Kosher Supermarket is now a domestic terrorism probe, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and New Jersey US Attorney Craig Carpenito told reporters on Thursday, adding that the violence was believed to be motivated by anti-Semitism and hatred of law enforcement.

"The evidence points towards acts of hate," Grewal said.

One of the shooters, identified as David Anderson, was linked on Wednesday to the Black Hebrew Israelites, a fringe black supremacist group. Anderson made anti-Semitic and anti-police posts online before embarking on the shooting spree, according to law enforcement. A "manifesto-style note" was also found in the stolen U-Haul Anderson and his companion, a woman named Francine Graham, were driving. [..]

This is the same fringe group that attacked the Covington Catholic High School students

While the attack was initially thought to be random, surveillance footage showed the pair deliberately targeted the kosher market, driving there after gunning down a detective who attempted to question them about a recent murder in which they were also suspects.

Best of the Web: The Art of Doublespeak: Bellingcat And Mind Control

TV hypnosis
In the 1920s, the influential American intellectual Walter Lippman argued that the average person was incapable of seeing or understanding the world clearly and needed to be guided by experts behind the social curtain. In a number of books he laid out the theoretical foundations for the practical work of Edward Bernays, who developed "public relations" (aka propaganda) to carry out this task for the ruling elites. Bernays had honed his skills while working as a propagandist for the United States during World War I, and after the war he set himself up as a public relations counselor in New York City.

There is a fascinating exchange at the beginning of Adam Curtis's documentary, The Century of Self, where Bernays, then nearly 100 years old but still very sharp, reveals his manipulative mindset and that of so many of those who have followed in his wake. He says the reason he couldn't call his new business "propaganda" was because the Germans had given propaganda a "bad name," and so he came up with the euphemism "public relations." He then adds that "if you could use it [i.e. propaganda] for war, you certainly could use it for peace." Of course, he never used PR for peace but just to manipulate public opinion (he helped engineer the CIA coup against the democratically elected Arbenz government in Guatemala in 1954 with fake news broadcasts). He says "the Germans gave propaganda a bad name," not Bernays and the United States with their vast campaign of lies, mainly aimed at the American people to get their support for going to a war they opposed (think weapons of mass destruction). He sounds proud of his war propaganda work that resounded to his credit since it led to support for the "war to end all wars" and subsequently to a hit movie about WWI , Yankee Doodle Dandy, made in 1942 to promote another war, since the first one somehow didn't achieve its lofty goal.

As Bernays has said in his book Propaganda,
The American motion picture is the greatest unconscious carrier of propaganda in the world today.

Best of the Web: Greta Thunberg wins TIME Person of the Year: It's a symptom of a sick & confused world when adults make children their leaders

The willingness of adults to listen to teenagers rather than themselves is a sign of a deep societal crisis in the West.

Edward Felsenthal, the editor-in-chief of TIME boasted that 16-year-old Greta Thunberg is the magazine's youngest choice to be named Person of the Year.

I was not the least bit surprised - by now it would have been an upset if the headline-making environmentalist failed to reap yet another publicity reward - but still alarmed.

Gone are the days when TIME chose adult men, like Martin Luther King or Winston Churchill as the magazine's person of the year (Adolf Hitler too - the award is for the most influential, not necessarily the most virtuous public figure).

Comment: Trump pointed out the absurdity of TIME's cover choice:
"So ridiculous," Trump tweeted on Thursday while commenting on a tweet by actress and producer Roma Downey, in which she congratulated Thunberg on topping the TIME list of most influential people for 2019.

"Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!"

Trump and Thunberg briefly crossed paths on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September, where both of them delivered impassioned speeches. They did not speak to each other but the teenage activist was spotted giving Trump a now-iconic cold glare, which quickly spurred a plethora of memes online.

It is amazing how easily, without resistance, the Western empire is managing to destroy "rebellious" countries that are standing in its way.

I work in all corners of the planet, wherever Kafkaesque "conflicts" get ignited by Washington, London or Paris.

What I see and describe are not only those horrors which are taking place all around me; horrors that are ruining human lives, destroying villages, cities and entire countries. What I try to grasp is that on the television screens and on the pages of newspapers and the internet, the monstrous crimes against humanity somehow get covered (described), but the information becomes twisted and manipulated to such an extent, that readers and viewers in all parts of the world end up knowing close to nothing about their own suffering, and/or of the suffering of the other.

For instance, in 2015 and in 2019, I tried to sit down and reason with the Hong Kong rioters. It was a truly revealing experience! They knew nothing, absolutely zero about the crimes the West has been committing in places such as Afghanistan, Syria or Libya. When I tried to explain to them, how many Latin American democracies Washington had overthrown, they thought I was a lunatic. How could the good, tender, 'democratic' West murder millions, and bathe entire continents in blood? That is not what they were taught at their universities. That is not what the BBC, CNN or even the China Morning Post said and wrote.

Look, I am serious. I showed them photos from Afghanistan and Syria; photos stored in my phone. They must have understood that this was original, first hand stuff. Still, they looked, but their brains were not capable of processing what they were being shown. Images and words; these people were conditioned not to comprehend certain types of information.

But this is not only happening in Hong Kong, a former British colony.
