Greater Toronto Area digs out as over a foot of snow hits overnight

A major winter storm is creating havoc with cars, trucks and buses getting stuck in the snow all around the Greater Toronto Area.

The snow came down quickly overnight with vehicles no match against the storm.

It's estimated that over 30 cm of snow fell overnight and during the morning commute forcing police to shut down major highways.

But as Marianne Dimain reports, the kindness of strangers is helping people keep moving as their cars get stuck in one of the biggest snow storms to hit southern Ontario in years.

... it's just... 'Trona ... you know ...i mean ... geezez !?

you never hear Barrie, Orillia, North Bay, the Sault, Thunderbay or other communities in ontario whine about snow like 'Trona.

it's snow, you're canadians, deal with it, eh.

and use some common sense... like not driving in a fkn blizzard.

I spent 45 minutes shoveling this morning. Luckily, I parked my car underground. That looked like a true headache - trying to get all the snow while paralleled parked. My poor short-legged Jack Russell got a workout of the ages during our walks.

I have a big zip up sweater that I call my Snow Leopard due to the white/black spotted print.

I will say, it was heart-warming to see people helping other people. Whether it be pushing buses, helping someone get over the sidewalk, teams of shovellers, and of course, the children tobogganing. Made me think that this is what Community actually looks like. Too bad it'll be short-lived.

One foot of snow and it is national news. Toronto is further south than Great Falls Montana. You tell somebody from Ontario about the snow California gets in the Sierra Nevada's like through the Donner Pass, and they refuse to believe it.

Dave funny how geography, wind, and water plays with weather and latitude ... probably more non-skiers in ontario may not believe you - Donner sounds like an awesome place !

Dave Yep. The first time I skied Mammoth, the snow was plowed 15' deep on the sides of the road and had at least 10 feet of fallen snow. (As it's said, only there is snow measured in feet and not inches.) Until I skied other places more, I had thought that was commonplace everywhere.

I routinely would stay with my beloved uncle and aunt in Grass Valley. Great times.

Also, the locals thereabouts are GREAT skiers! I remember driving to Squaw and other places where there were ski jumps where folks routinely would ski above and over the roads to land on the farther downhill slope and keep on trucking. Folks who could do things like this. [Link]
