A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck 203 kilometres north-west of Carnarvon in the state's north-west on Sunday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres and struck at 10.26pm local time.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a tsunami following the tremor.

The earthquake was felt 1000 kilometres away in Perth.

The quake struck in the Indian Ocean at 10:26pm local time, about 116 kilometers (72 miles) southwest of Coral Bay.
