A death sentence for Iranian billionaire Babak Zanjani charged with fraud and money laundering has been upheld by the Iranian Supreme Court, court's senior official Gholamreza Ansari said on Saturday.

"The main verdict on Zanjani oil case was confirmed," Ansari was quoted as saying by Iranian IRIB broadcaster.

In late November, local media reported, citing a source in the Supreme Court that the court overturned the decision, but Zanjani's lawyer, who appealed the ruling at the Supreme Court, said that the final decision would be known on Saturday.

Zanjani, an Iranian tycoon, who has assets in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia, was arrested by Iranian authorities in December 2013 after accusations of state money laundering through deals on oil sales and was sentenced to death in March.
