Behind the Headlines: War on Syria ending? Erdogan-Putin peace deal

Erdogan's recent meeting with Putin in St Petersburg means the US-led 5-year-long effort to oust President Assad in Syria is all but over. Western leaders will, however, be the last to realize this. This week on Behind the Headlines we're discussing the bloody siege of Aleppo, the last major Syrian city where Western-backed terrorists are holding out.

Elsewhere on the West-East battlefront this week, Kiev forces were prevented from committing terror attacks in Crimea, 11 coordinated bombings at tourist sites in Thailand left 4 dead and dozens injured, and US-UK efforts to 'stir the pot' in the South China Sea has cast a spotlight on the anti-drugs policies of new Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte.

Extreme weather events this week saw yet another 'one-in-1,000-year flooding event', this time in Louisiana; a devastating flash-flood hitting Skopje, Macedonia; and a month's worth of rainfall in 24 hours swamping parts of Mexico.

All this and more coming up later today on Behind the Headlines - from 12 noon US Eastern, 6pm Central European.

Not so fast. So far Erdougan just talks and we haven't seen ANY concrete actions by him. Seem Erdogan is waiting for Kerry's visit to possibly see what bribes er presents USA may offer.
We have a while to wait and in fact the clock is ticking. USA will get a new president in 2017 and whatever advantage Russia may have in Syria will evaporate overnight. Second, Putin's residency s coming to an end in 2018 and I bet the Americans think the next president who might be Medvedev will bend down to USA's will. So the Russians are losing every single day the war in Syria isnt decided. USA is playing for time.
Prove me wrong.

What world are you living on, Do you read SOTT? Where have you been for the last month or so.

Erdogan has had major purges in the social and political structures of Turkey, also the military, in effect he has shown some muscle an has sent a message to the "West"

He has the "West" running scared. Where will his allegiance lie, my bet is with Russia.

With all the promises of EU membership. It's was like dangling a carrot to a donkey. They have lead him on for years.

Turkey is predominately Muslim, do you think that the white Anglo Saxon mentality, that has held sway in the western world for what 300 + years would accept a Muslim state into there fold. Without some form of blackmail or promise, somewhere in the far distant future, when there goal has been achieved. No he was just a pawn in the strategy of US Hegemony

Makes me wonder how he could be fooled for so long, makes me think he is possibly an honest man and naïve in the ways of western deception. Why would his people come out in droves to support him.

The rest in waiting to be written in the history books

The question is what is the real choice he will make for his country and the people that inhabit that country.

Proof is in the pudding, which won't be ready until at least the end of this year. Most of the SOTT community and a great deal of the thinking, caring world want to prove you wrong because what you suggest is not only the worst scenario for the future but fits in far too well with the U.S./NATO/Western narrative; so well that I wonder what your own agenda is by posting here.

Where have I been? I been right next door to Erdougan watching his every move. He is as dishonest as every other turk. I been watching Turkey, Russia reading RT (almost useless now since they were declawed) reading Sputnik(a little bit better) and reading the Saker(a lot of wishful thinking). Im Bulgaria so I am right in the middle of everything. i dunno where you been. Probably in your comfortable chair, being an armchair warrior.
Erdougan's allegiance lie with himself. He wants to take care f himself first and foremost. We all know the story about his son and his daughter being in charge.
We don't even have concrete proof the coup in Turkey was even real or just fake so Erdougan can consolidate his power. The coup was designed so Edrougan could take power. Funny how a few months before the coup he was evil man who killed Kurds and Syrians and now he is the "good guy" who was being led by the West. Get off the hyperbolas buddy. Erdogan killed lots of Syrians and Kurds; he will NEVER be a "good guy" being led by the West. Putin knows it. Putin is trying to be pals cuz Putin needs him but so far I havent seen a single step by Edougan just talk. Give me a concrete example of something Erdougan did that was in favor of Russia. There us none. The Turkish border is still open and "rebels" are still going through.

The West aint running cared. They are planing. Turkey will be bought just like Serbia was just bought with money and fake promises. Kerry is going there with bribes and promises and Erdougan, the butcher of Kurds and Syrians is laying down his bets. Putin will be fooled again.

of what you say at all. I think you have Erdo pegged pretty damn good. Although he may not be a 'good guy', to which I think we all agree, he may have to act like one to survive. Which also means Putin had better have eyes in the back of his head. But as for Putins' advantage disappearing after January...no. We have your perspective from there on the scene, so to speak, and I'm sure most here agree with your assessment. But here is a perspective of an American when it comes to what is what and not what they will try to make it. No matter who runs the White House, the outcome is always the same. The only difference will be who benefits(steals) the most. Most realize what a Killery admin will do on the world stage, she's made it very plain. She will seek to finish the Zionist agenda...and we all know what that means. Trump, despite his assurance that he can't be bought, is still an oligarch who knows zero about running a government, much less a military. Look what a great job Porky is doing in Ukraine. Trump in the end will do what he is told to do. The difference will be in the way they implement their plans. Outright belligerence or terrorist boogey men to get the people to demand war. So, yes, there will be a change towards war. That being said, the US military is tired and worried. They are not all fired up to rush into Syria or Ukraine because they know it will virtually be just us. The EU is terrified of a conflict with Russia in their back yard. If the Russians truly do have the technology to render some US technology ineffective, that is a major game changer. We've already seen their war tech in action and it's pretty good. Right now, the US is trying to snow Putin every way possible to try to find a way to get past those missile systems they dare not mess with. Putin has the high ground, so to speak...he also is getting his allies in the area on the same page. We Americans can only admire someone who can think and chew gum at the same time, unfortunately, none of our politicians can...and that won't change after January. My perspective is that Putin has not been fooled, but has done things that were necessary to give Erdogan enough rope to hang himself...and he has. His days are numbered and Turkey is next on the chopping block and Erdo will have to make a decision. In the end I still am in agreement with you, the West is planning for sure...but, believe me, they are running scared...at least the smart ones are. NATO members, despite all their BS know that they don't have a chance in hell against Russia. Putin knows what they are after; 4/5ths of the worlds' landmass, that is mostly undeveloped (untapped), that is named Russia. Now, today China has signalled their entrance officially into the fray. So it begins. I feel for the people in the area...eastern Europe, as they are on the front lines no matter where the SHTF. The only way out for them is to ban NATO and fight the economic onslaught that will bring from the west. That probably wouldn't do any good at this late date unfortunately. Best to hope for Killery to win big, to give the idiots the balls to start shit with Russia, then hope to hell Russia beats them so bad they beg for mercy. The only other option is for Putin to capitulate, which would be more than just political suicide, or make the West back down. Regardless, that seems to be the path we are all on, however cynical that may be.
