On Wednesday, Feb. 18 The Tyee's Katie Hyslop reported on the demolition of St. Michael's Indian Residential School in Alert Bay, British Columbia. A day-long ceremony honoured St. Michael's survivors with prayer, speeches and song.

Though the building is set to disappear from the landscape, the experiences of these survivors will not be forgotten. This video piece by Ed Carswell captures a personal account of survivor Verna Flanders, as told to a class of young students in Courtenay, B.C.

Comment: This woman has suffered in great depth, as thousands of other did. By speaking, educating children about these horrors without revisionist intents, the picture will remain rather than being hidden away.

Lost Bird, Survivor of Wounded Knee, Betrayed By the White Man

Of all the stories I've uncovered while researching antique photographs in my collection, this one is the most heartbreaking. Starting with the Massacre at Wounded Knee on Dec. 29, 1890, "Lost Bird" suffered every kind of injury and abuse the White Man imposed on Native Americans. She died on Valentine's Day in 1920, aged 29, and was buried in a pauper's grave in California, but 71 years later, her people, the Lakota, found her grave and brought her remains back to Wounded Knee, the place where she was found as an infant beneath her mother's frozen body. ......continued

At first I thought… The most powerful thing that you can do for your people, your future, your land, your air, your water is to fight and die for what you believe in. But it’s not true… you have to LIVE for what you believe in.

So begins the wise words of 13-year old Sliammon Native Youth, Ta’Kaiya Blaney in a recent video (below) by Indigenous Rising. If you are like me then you will be moved to tears by hearing what she has to say after that in the video, but you’ll have to watch it to find out. I recently had the pleasure of talking with Ta’Kaiya about the video while delving into the changing face of social engagement that is bringing healing for our communities and the environment.

The rot produced by lying has eaten the foundation of all pillars. Nothing is, as it seems.
