Twenty-one residents in Baudin Circle in Ladera Ranch say they received letters from the Orange County Public Works department, stating that their lights are safety hazards. Some homeowners at Baudin circle have taken pride in putting together an impressive Christmas lights show for ten years.
"We had to take down any cords that ran across our sidewalk, as well as any of the roads," resident Jeff Stover said.
The fines are said to be in the amount of $500 per day if the lights are not taken down by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
"This was, I think, our second notice today, and basically it says we have twenty-four hours to take (the lights) down, before we get fined five-hundred dollars a day," resident Cynthia Mellow said. "I texted my husband 'we need to take those lights down'."
A spokesperson for OC Public Works says that a crew will visit Baudin Circle on Wednesday morning to make certain residents there are in compliance with the county.
"We really understand," OC Public Works' Shannon Widor said. "People love to celebrate the holidays. We just ask that they take the proper step, and that would be obtaining a permit, because safety is the top priority."
Residents say that they intend to comply, but will be applying for permits for next year.
Comment: This looks to be more about generating revenue than concerns about safety. Surely there would be a better way to deal with this, but unfortunately, even local governments only know how to act through threats.

where 'light cords on sidewalks' are a safety hazard but driving your yacht wasted around the Harbor is totally fine...geez
I'll bet if those residents put up a 60-foot high Hanukkah menorah with 25 cords running across the sidewalk, the Orange County Sicherheitsdienst would not DARE to open their mouths and emit so much as a peep of criticism. If they did, the howls and shrieks of "Anti-Semitism!" would be audible from California to Jerusalem - even without the benefit of amplification. Anybody agree? Then why do they feel so free to pick on people celebrating Christmas? Yeah, yeah, but in the last 10 years they have been putting up their lights, how many passers-by have suffered broken legs by tripping over the cords? Eh? Do I hear a reply? No? I'll tell you. It's just another example of tin-pot dictators with a little authority believing that tiny power they wield makes them One With God. Those are the kind of people who leave stains on the furniture. $500 a day? Why not $5 million? Think of the salaries and pensions they could pay themselves with that kind of loot. There must not be many Sicilians in that neighborhood. If there were, the Orange County Einsatzgruppen would be paying THEM for the lights, not the other way round. Cynthia Mellow. What does that tell you? Not Maria Farfanelli, that's for sure. Must be a bunch of WASP sheep.
1. A cord running across a sidewalk is unsafe. (That's a stretch, but not totally unreasonable)
2a. Pay a daily fine of $500, or
2b. Apply and pay for a permit, because either of those will magically make the cords running across a sidewalk safe.
People elect local politicians who appoint/hire bureaucrats who operate this way. Yet, the same people refuse to see the cause-and-effect here, and keep electing and re-electing the same goons over and over and over again.
Pogo was right: "We have met the enemy and he is us."
Having light cords cross sidewalks and roads is a safety hazzard, as people could trip and fall.
On the other hand, it galls me that people should be required to obtain a permit to decorate their own property.
