Don't Panic! Lighten Up!
One Christmas while staying at my cousin's house, one of her children decided that the most entertaining game ever would be to chase each other around the house with fly swatters to try to smack each other on the butt. Moral of the story: kids will play with anything. And that's the take away message for the surprising new gun safety ad "Playthings," featuring two kids unknowingly playing with sex toys.
The ad is a humorous look at a very serious issue. Sponsored by the gun-control group Evolve Together, it really drives home the need for parents to lock up their guns and keep them out of the hands of kids. And this is a serious issue. About 7,000 kids are hospitalized every year in the US because of guns. Though certainly not all of those are the result of kids playing with firearms, studies show that dozens of children a year actually die because of they were playing with an unsecured firearm.
Although gun control remains a contentious issue, surely everyone in this country can agree that keeping guns out of the hands of young children should be a no brainer - even those people who bring automatic weapons to Chipotle in order to prove a point should be able to get behind the idea.
"Americans can have a serious conversation about firearm safety that doesn't devolve into a political abyss," said Evolve Together co-founder Rebecca Bond. "We're using humor to cut through political correctness and deliver a simple message."
Amen. As you can see above, this humor really hits home.

Common criminals and thugs, who care not one whit about "legal" or "illegal", will always have guns (even if completely banned, they are extremely simple to make in a home workshop). Also, the police and military, who are merely agents of the psychopaths in power, will always have them. And, as history has shown over and over and over again, governments tend to turn on those they consider opponents, whether real or imagined, killing them by the thousands and millions. Throughout history, no form of gov't has been an exception, to include the most advanced and "civilized" societies of their time.
It is unconscionable to deprive people of the ability to protect themselves from those who would injure or kill them, whether those are merely common criminals (who will still exist even in your utopian fantasy) or the agents of a gov't in the process of trying to consolidate/maintain its power.
And, yes, the commercial is well-done, and sends a valuable message without demonizing law-abiding firearms owners as most anti-gun lobbies try to do.
Of course the cops and the military have them (duh), but they're not using them to shoot civilians like in the US.
I don't NEED to protect myself with a gun because NOBODY is trying to kill me.
Maybe you've lived in an insane country for too long and think the whole world is insane and can't be any different.
You've obviously never been on aeroplane before.
We can't all be soccer moms.
Or can we?
Yes, we must.
We must become soccer moms, every one of us, to protect the children.
And let those in government train and equip the soldiers and the poliice departments.
This is surely the way to peace.
