If those communities had enough access to those people to know that they died, then they should have been able to do something to keep them alive.
Though this number is really not that high compared to the millions living in those regions, it gives us pause to wonder how our own communities would fare in the face of a major weather emergency. We are not talking about extreme winds or storms. It just got too cold.
What the story possibly missed is the number of people helped or in fact saved by community groups bringing the less fortunate into spaces which could be kept warm, delivering food and blankets, etc. We get no sense from the article of what efforts may have been taken to save people at risk.
So I'm not sure whether I am flunking the affected communities or the editor of this news report. Perhaps the latter, eh?
