Society's Child
Born with a rare medical condition, Velasquez has no adipose tissue and cannot create muscle, store energy, or gain weight. She has zero percent fat in her body and weights only 60 pounds (22 kg). But despite all her physical complications her spirits and level of motivation has always been sky high.
After years of misery and self-doubt, Lizzie Velasquez from Austin, Texas says she can finally shrug off the hurtful comments about her looks as 'just words'.
When people in their comments on a 8-second-long YouTube video named as 'The World's Ugliest Woman' encouraged her to kill herself and called her a 'monster', she instead of paying heed to such insensitivity designed four goals for herself: to become a motivational speaker, to publish a book, to graduate college, and to build a family and a career for herself.
Lizzie is 23-years-old now, she has been a motivational speaker for seven years and has given various workshops on multiple topics like dealing with bullies, embracing uniqueness and overcoming obstacles. Her first book called Lizzie Beautiful came in 2010 and her second Be Beautiful, Be You arrived earlier this month. Above all, she is a senior majoring in Communications at Texas State University.
In her recent interview to CNN she said: "The stares are what I'm really dealing with in public right now. But I think I'm getting to the point where... instead of sitting by and watching people judge me, I'm starting to want to go up to these people and introduce myself or give them my card and say, 'Hi, I'm Lizzie. Maybe you should stop staring and start learning'."
At the time of her birth she weighed just 2 pounds 10 ounces (1 kg) and there were bleak chances as to whether she would survive or not. Fortunately, she thrived. Her internal organs and bones developed normally, though her body is tiny. Due to absence of fatty tissue in her body, she has to eat after every 10 to 15 minutes to energize herself.
Instead of retaliating against people who have hurt her, Lizzie has always set goals that can push her forward despite all hurdles. "I feel really glad that I don't look like the celebrities out there that are so beautiful," she said in her interview.
So, if you are also a victim of bullying because of your features or looks, try following the example of Lizzie Velasquez to make your life simpler and successful.

"what a beautiful human being !!"
My thought, Verbatim! (Only I likely would have used three exclamation marks.)
There but for the grace of God go I - and each and every one of us.
As for the pathetic, evil little souls who posted such comments, for most of my life, I would have loved to track them down, and. . . Well, just picture a TV-cartoon conscience - that is the devil on one shoulder...
But with experience, I realize that I DO pity those posters, and that I always have. And this is the angel on the other.
The devil is still there, and will remain for me, as long as I'm human. But he's gotten much smaller, and the angel's much bigger, "and I'm trying Ringo... I'm trying real hard to be the Sheppard." (Pulp Fiction).

It seriously keeps suprising me - I second that "people really don't have anything better to do ??!! WTF ??" Especially the "WTF" bit.
Lizzie is an inspiration, my heart softened and let go a bit more today reading that, and my eyes were weepy. What gentle and true beauty, I bet it didn't come easily but she hung in there to get to the golden pastures. Hopefully, she transcends the rubbish these days and lives a life of peace and true beauty that she has nurtured in herself. Thank God there are people like her still around.
Thanks for the article.
obvious lack of muscle tissue, but there has to be some to hold the skeleton up, right? So, what's the deal with that? Did some genes get turned off at some point in the body's development? Makes you wonder then, if they can be turned back on...
I sense that the writer misconstrued some of this, as it's more likely accurate to say she's unable be make more muscle mass ( or makes it very slowly ). Therefor, it is inaccurate to say that she "cannot create muscle…" At 23 years old, she's already had dozens of completely different sets of cells in her heart, and it keeps beating.
Einstein suggested that we can either see nothing as a miracle, or everything … as a miracle.
Her healthy DNA/genes are conflicted with her disease's genetic expression, yet life inexorably continues.
I suspect that she would have died long ago, if her body was unable to replace her existing skin and muscle mass. Every year 98% of all of our atoms are replaced with new ones -- almost all of our cells are brand new every birthday !
What a present.
after seeing the first picture, yes, i did take a closer look and yes she looked unusual ... after reading the article i now look at her and think she's beautiful !!! she turned her flaw into an ability to serve others - to give other people hope, inspire them, uplift them and look beyond superficiality - that is totally mind-blowing !!! how big of a heart do you have to have to be able to do that ?? WOW
but i can't believe the callousness of people posting those hurtful comments underneath a youtube video ... people really don't have anything better to do ??!! WTF ??
i also wonder what a paleo or ketogenic diet could do for her or if it could do anything for her at all ... :-/ ...
