"It has helped find water supplies in the U.S. for 100 years, though environmentalists believe it can contaminate water supplies."
This may be so, but finding water via fracking does not involve the injection of a hellbroth of toxic chemicals into the earth... just water.
"Fracking has opened up new supplies of natural gas that will reduce imports of the fuel"
This is the argument that they are using in France... reduce our dependence on imports... of course they do not tell us that it will be at the expense of the ecology and water table. It is France's abundant ground water which has allowed it to feed Europe for hundreds of years. When that is toast, France will have lost its agricultural base, not to mention its drinking water. It will have pissed away its one greatest natural resource for the sake of short term oil/gas industry profits. And if you think that domestic production will translate to lower consumer fuel bills you are in la la land.
"...and drillers say that methane contamination was present in drinking water before drilling began."
And what? We expected them to accept responsibility?
