While this storm was a good one, the blizzard of 1978 dropped over 27 inches in Central Park. I lived in Brooklyn back then and everything was shut down. We played football in the middle of Ave P! The city survived, as it will with this dusting! It took days to get things moving....but we did get through it. Good luck from Northern NH.
However. . , it is also worth pointing out that the Blizzard of 1978 took place in early February, right in the middle of Winter, whereas this story hit at in late December. Also, it is part of a world-wide trend of intense Winter conditions which are setting brand new records across Europe.
That makes it all a bit more intriguing.
Wait till 13 feet falls in one go.

Why colour these beautiful pictures with dire predictions and snide remarks?
. . ."it looks like SOTT's prediction that we are entering an Ice Age is coming true. Of course, the denialists will tell us that we have confused weather for climate, but when these same people confuse the War on Terror for the War Against the People, it is clear just who is really confused."
Sooooo unnecessary and childish . . . Although this does seem to be the tend of late.
Maybe time to find another digest website with a bit more objectivity and a tendency to look a little more on the bright side.
I don't think the two categories mentioned at the top of the page include the same people. Certainly I fall into one category but definitely not the other. And you ARE confusing climate with weather - which makes you the denialist. Stick to the fascist/zionist bashing please.
It is still what is true. But, for those who can not stand truth because it so disturbing to them, perhaps other venues which provide more of a look 'on the bright-side' would be better suited for them.
Well... For us Montrealers this is everyday life in our ever-recuring Canadian winters!
The blizzard was filled with thunder & lightening - never have i ever witnessed that combination!
And I'm certainly not dissing Laura. But in Saskatchewan, in my lifetime, I've seen snowstorms and blizzards worse than this where you couldn't drive or walk, where railroad tracks were covered by ten feet of snow, where food and animal feed had to be delivered by helicopter and/or skidoos to rural areas.
But on a global scale (the UK and the rest of Europe, Australia and elsewhere), it really does look like an ice age is on the way, so let's start dealing with reality instead of going into the denial of looking on the bright side.
What amazes me is that when the weather is unseasonably cold and we have events such as are occurring across Europe and the US, when somebody equates this to evidence that man made climate change is questionable, and that instead there is an ice age coming, they are abused, and told they are equating weather with climate.
However, when we have unseasonably hot weather, the climate alarmists are crawling all over the event and telling us this IS evidence of man made climate change. So when it is too cold, that is just weather, but when it is hot THAT is climate change. Seems to me these guys want their cake AND eat it. Hypocrites!
I live on the Gulf Coast, I see this only in pictures, and these pictures are beautiful.
for gods sake, give it a rest... sure, big snow, quite beautiful, quite a mess, but while you're preaching armageddon or the coming ice age, you still have your own life to deal with. christ on a stick, deal with yourSELF unless you're really too bored with your own life to do anything better than preach doom n' gloom.
Well, if people at SOTT were indeed "too bored with their own life", then they wouldn't have spent all this time and effort for this site to exist in the first place...
People who are being genuinely "bored" are rarely anything more than your everyday consumers who storm malls of Black Fridays, uneducated about the world around them, with their brains chemicaly lobotomized and incapacitated, who after all are only interested in themselves and entertaining their boredom with daydreaming and wishful thinking.
Another who is sick and tired of all the gloom and doom and the defensive response of these gloomers that they practice "reality" - to the exclusion of all others, of course. Its cult -like.
. . . and elbo, I have followed everything Laura has written - including the stuff on the link you provided. Her posturings amuse me endlessly and amusement is healthy. Sometimes though, I suffer from mild overdoses.
A woman on the streets was stopped by a reporter in N.Y. about a week after the towers fell. the reporter asked, "so what do you think about what happened last week?"
The lady looked shocked and pissed at the audacity of the question, stared at the reporter for a few seconds and said, "You know, I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to this city. I've lived here all my life, and for the first time since I've seen, people are looking one another in the eye... strangers talking to strangers... amazing." then she walked away.
I'd not ever hope for tragedies like that to happen; it doesn't matter if it was afgans or bushies that did it, but it seems to me that only when the familiarity and thralldom of culture is broken can our paltry roles, masks and superficialities be broken thru as well...
once in awhile people make it on their own- wake up, so to speak- in a way that breaks through all conditioned belief and roles, but en masse? no way jose. hope is a worse evil than any bush or cheney- either one takes responsibility for one's own honesty, or one's hoping for a tomorrow that'll never come.
i think you missed my point. i just spoke with someone who's house got washed away in australia. he and his family are alive, so he's not complaining. the reality of the situation of a changing planet is affecting millions, soon to be more maybe, yet there's the plain fact that death (sorry, that's a scary word) takes us all, so in the meantime, folks'll either live, or live vicariously through distractions... my friend and his family are safe, but that's aside from the point. he told me that this brought them closer than they ever have been in DECADES. so it was a good thing. i say bring it on.
malls or internet blogging- same thing: keeping oneself occupied from oneself. no blame in that, just the fact that the life we're supposing to live is really the death we're avoiding facing... sorry 'bout the confounding play on words, but lets cut to the chase, eh? either we're deciding to look long and hard and truly at whether or not we even want to BEGIN finding out what is TRUE- not conceptually, but deeply personally- or we'd rather distract ourselves with what's right or wrong 'outside' of ourselves.
Activate your 12th strand DNA - the time is NOW to become AWARE - those flashes of lightning that brightened the Snow and the Thunder - made it feel like something was landing....." as if a piece of the Moon had fallen"...........
Coupled with the exquisite Lunar Eclipse on the Solstice - it was a very memorable Christmas - feel the energy that is flooding the earth and US! peace.
It looks like new-pole to me and has really a taste of "A day after tomorrow".
Thanks for sharing.
Great photos, I not sure whether this is climate or weather, or if it is even change. It's a little snow, that's all. One thing I do know, is that there is no better economic stimulus than a nice big snow storm, public workers will be working a lot of overtime to clear all the snow, and those fat pay checks they'll be getting will get spent! People will be buying shovels, salt, and snow blowers, more stimulus. Plows will break and require repairs, etc. Thanks Mother Nature, at least we can count on you for some shovel ready economic stimulus!
