Scientists believe that breakfast programmes the metabolism for the rest of the day, and a fatty meal will help the body break down fat later on.
Carbohydrate rich foods in contrast appear mainly to prepare the body to break down only carbohydrates, the International Journal of Obesity reports.
Dr Martin Young, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said: "The first meal you have appears to programme your metabolism for the rest of the day.
"This study suggests that if you ate a carbohydrate-rich breakfast it would promote carbohydrate utilisation throughout the rest of the day, whereas if you have a fat-rich breakfast, you (can) transfer your energy utilisation between carbohydrate and fat."
The team of researchers found there may be some truth in the old saying "'eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper' - may be the key to a healthy body and mind."
Their study looked at the effects of eating different types of food - and of eating them at different times in the day, according to the Daily Mail.
Mice fed a high fat meal after waking remained healthy, but those given a carb-rich breakfast, followed by a fatty dinner, did not fare as well.
Co-researcher Professor Molly Bray added: "Our study seems to show that if you really want to be able to efficiently respond to mixed meals across a day, a meal in higher fat content in the morning is a good thing."

Since I've been eating sausage, bacon and buckwheat blinis fried in duck fat for breakfast every morning, I've actually lost weight and sleep better!!!! It works! But you have to ditch ALL gluten and dairy!
I agree. My adrenal fatigue disappeared instantly the day I switched to a 'salty' and protein-rich breakfast. It works also with a simple salad, but no sweet stuff in the morning, please!
Still call it a miracle.
Take away the toast and swap the potatoes for hash browns and you've got what I had for breakfast today
...works better for me. When I have a breakfast like the one above, I go right back to sleep... :-)
Here's my favorite breakfast smoothie that keeps me going till the afternoon:
Blueberries, acai berries, hemp protein, hemp seeds, spirulina, maca, greener grasses (green superfood), ginger and cinnamon, sometimes a coconut and blend it with filtered water......yummy! :-)
Our bodies have really evolved for such food. 20,000 years ago we hunted down our animals, build our potatoes, got the chicken's eggs and after that we build a deep frying pan, a power plant and some tool to extract oil from a plant. Then we deep fried everything.
Come on.
sweet potato hashbrowns. Yummy! I lost all those 'menopausal pounds' on this diet, and have nary a hot flash. I weigh the same as I did when I was twenty and my skin looks three times better than it did at twenty. No gluten, no dairy, no sugar. Plenty of protein and natural fats. It's the only way to eat!

If I tried to eat whats on that plate or even what they suggest first thing in the morning, I'd be puking the rest of the day. Good grief, either I have a weak stomach or someone out there has a cast iron one. Oatmeal and fruit please.
