Description:
Monday was a public holiday in Australia (Queen's Birthday) and I spent it helping a friend with his renovations.

He lives in Fortitude Valley - next to Brisbane CBD (overlooking the river and a distant Brisbane Airport).

In the afternoon, I started to feel a bit tense - and kept looking out the balcony window. Suddenly, I noticed a luminous point travelling from left to right. The sky was blue in this direction, with two fluffy clouds cutting across. The sun was behind my viewpoint and the visibility was very good.

The point was travelling about 30-45deg above the horizon. As it moved across the sky, it slightly faded in and out at irregular intervals.

At times, it would resemble a line - but my eyes had real trouble fixing on the object for more than a few seconds.

I called my friend over but he couldn't see it - his eyesight is not so good, he reckons. There is an airport in the distance but the flight paths are different and it's not hard to tell planes apart, even with sun reflections.

The object passed behind one of the clouds, came to an apparent stop and faded out. It's also possible that it took off at an angle that made it look stationary - and simply disappeared in the distance.

I made a diagram which assumes the object took off. The red line is perpendicular to me, standing out on a balcony observing the whole thing. Blue lines mark the approximate beginning and end of the sighting in terms of viewing angle (I tried to remember the landmarks on the ground).

Green line shows the direction of travel. Just keep in mind that it's not possible to tell exactly where the green line should be. The object might have been very large at a distance - or small but a bit closer.
