saw the same thing over Meir Heath, a clear night and a orange ball travelling what seemed to be low and fast with no noise in a south westerly direction. it was about 11.15 PM, it was visible for about one minute slowly getting smaller. It was bizarre but I argued to my wife that it was possibly some kind of atmospheric distortion. TV reception always gets poor in hot weather around here. About half an hour later the same thing happened pretty much the exact route, light colour and duration. There is a rational explanation somewhere but I still had to jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds!
